To prepare for the upcoming speaking club, I’m gonna write something about its topic (freedom). I’ve already made up a list of questions and found a bunch of quotes to have something to discuss; now it’s time to clarify my current understanding of the subject.
Freedom, broadly speaking, is a concept based on the assumption that one can act upon his own interests in contrast to being forced to act by someone else. It’s also a kind of metaphysical treasure that some ideologists view as the most precious thing on earth. The more freedom one has, the more happy he is supposed to be. Unless one has too much of it, so that everything turns into bloody chaos. I would say that freedom requires a certain knowledge about one’s boundaries. For example, when we know only one side (language) from which we may consider freedom, we have no freedom at all, and our view is quite limited. Hence it’s important to have exactly as much freedom as we need to function properly, understanding our own limits. Doesn’t sound as a good argument, but anyway. It’s not an argumentative essay. Freedom may be viewed as a goal. Many people work all the time, hoping to become free at some moment and believing that money will make them so. This rubbish may easily fly into one’s head, tyrannize his will and make an individual into a life-long slave of foolish prejudices. Obviously, death makes everyone free, but, strangely enough, it’s the most threatening thing in the warld, except torture, complete madness, humiliation etc, etc.
