Now, I’m at the ICC. There is gonna be a speaking club in 30 minutes. The host is a girl whom I know almost nothing about. I came here to see how much it’s gonna be different from my clubs. I have 30 minutes to make this note. Perhaps it makes sense to think about the topic of the upcoming event. The topic is, predictably, movies. I guess there will be questions like, “What’s your favorite movie?”, “Who’s your favorite actor, director, etc.” What kind of questions would I ask if I had to build a discussion about movies? Okay, let’s see. Why do we make movies? Why do we watch them? Why do we like them? How do movies change our lives? How do they affect our behavior? Why do so many people believe that they can learn a language by watching movies? How have movies evolved over the last hundred years? What kinds of movies would you make if you were a film director?
Well, it’s quite superficial. I noticed that when I have a limited amount of time to write something, I never come up with anything profound. A few days ago, I tried to think about wisdom, having only 40 minutes to put my thoughts down on paper. I expected that I would be enough—40 minutes is a lot of time to make a short note—but being in a hurry, I couldn’t think clearly. Yet, when there are “free intervals” between my activities, or I have to wait for something like now, launching out a new train of thought by writing is the best way of using time.
