9:20am.
It’s incredible how many interesting things one can find if one is willing to open up his mind to directions which he has despised for a long time. This marketing business has actually its own heroes as well as any other business including philosophy, science, religion, etc. I was quite obsessed with morality, virtue and all sorts of idols, missing something important. I don’t say money is important, and I still have this bias of considering money as the least valuable value, but certain people who ate a dog working out the conceptual understanding of the world of money deserve some attention. It’s a new area for me, so I see lots of opportunities in investigating that area. Today, I have only one task, which is reading Propaganda by Bernays.
11:10am.
Had breakfast and finished reading chapter 5: Business and the Public. What was it about? I guess the main point was that business must learn about what’s going on in public consciousness, using all the cunning tricks to attract public attention. So it’s not about making a product, but rather about presenting a product in a group mind so that the latter finds it desirable and develops a need for it. The next chapter is called Propaganda and Political Leadership. Perhaps, the author is gonna talk about how to say things the public likes to hear and how to “educate” walking puppets who’re gonna say these things with such fidelity that it’ll blow up the public mind. Let’s see.
Here is the beginning of this chapter: “The great political problem in our modern democracy is how to induce our leaders to lead.”
12:10pm.
It was actually a chapter about teaching politicians to use methods developed by business. The idea was that at first business acquired those methods which politicians used to gain power and spread their influence, but then, business moved on, whereas politicians remained stubborn in their way of dealing with the group mind. It also doesn’t teach political leaders to say everything that’s pleasing to the masses, but rather it teaches political leaders to reconcile their beliefs and objectives with public consciousness. Well, now the politician and the moneymaker are playing way better than they did a hundred years ago, so that usually it’s almost impossible to distinguish one from the other.
Now, I’m gonna take a walk with A. We decided to go to the forest, so I’ll probably not be able to finish this book today (there are 40 pages left). I also planned to write an article for my English course, but there is nothing wrong to put it off one day.
