It is about war and peace, happiness and tragedies, strong friendship and a return to roots.
Filled with funny and dramatic events, the saga is largely autobiographical in collective images and is built on real historical events that took place in Afghanistan at different times.
Six heroes - fighting friends: Kostyan (Konstantin Thevs), Rust (Rustam Tukaev), Mongol (Darkhan Badmaev), Strela (German Streltsov), Sidor (Sergei Sidorenko), Koster (Ivan Kostrov) - military intelligence officers of the Limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan , drafted into the Soviet Army in the fall of 1984 from different regions of the USSR.
Three friends who survived the war will go through the vicissitudes of the 1990s and turn the pages of history.
But who said that Afghanistan is in the past ?! Once entered, he will remain IN the CIRCLE OF KUNDUZ forever!
The story will be continued at the present time, in the 2000s, at the stage of the presence in Afghanistan of the united forces of the western ISAF coalition.
Its main character will be the son of one of the friends - the Bundeswehr oberleutenant Bruno Thevs.

KUNDUZ CIRCLE is a landmark of the city in the north-east of Afghanistan, which is a round square with shopping stalls and eternal hustle and bustle. Metaphorically, in the cycle of events that took place in Kunduz, the destinies of people of different generations and states were intertwined: Afghans, British, Soviet and German military. Since the Basmachism, World War II, Afghan War (1979-1989) and, since 2001 - the Military Operation of the United Forces of the Western ISAF Coalition led by the United States to the present day, Kunduz has been and remains a strategic hub at the main theater of the «Great Game».

SHORT CONTENT

The story begins in 1984. Six Soviet guys from different parts of the USSR meet at a recruiting station in Moscow and, having passed training together in the Turkestan military district, end up in Afghanistan. While participating in difficult hostilities, three friends are killed. Three survivors are returning to another country and are faced with the debunking of past values and the timelessness of the 1990s, having lost another friend in them. These events are described in the stories of the novel «We'll All Be Back!» and «Not by a front corridor».
The story «Zugzwang Ober-Lieutenant Bruno Thevs»  tells the fate of a German boy named Bruno Thevs, the son of one of six friends who died in Afghanistan. He was taken away from the USSR in the late 1980s by his widow mother for permanent residence in Germany. Growing up, Bruno will become a professional military man, an intelligence officer in the Bundeswehr and realizes his old dream of being in the Afghan war.
Taking part in military operations of NATO forces against the radical Taliban movement in the 2000s, Bruno Thevs will face the mujahid who killed his father in battle. But in that war, Bruno will also have new losses. The bitterness of loss and the tragedy of the Afghan people seen firsthand will lead to a turning point in Bruno's mind. After serving the due date, he will quit military service and go to Moscow in search of two surviving friends of his father. Together they will be destined to be in a twist. The happy ending of the story will be Bruno Tevs' finding of happiness in his historical homeland, Russia.

The novel was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature 2021.

LONGLINE: This is a story about war and peace, happiness and tragedies, strong friendship and a return to the roots. The main character is a Russian German, an officer of the special operations forces KSK Bundeswehr (FRG), the son of a Soviet soldier who died in 1986 in Afghanistan. The desire to avenge the death of his father directs him, who was taken away from the USSR to the Federal Republic of Germany, to participate in the military operation of the NATO forces (ISAF) «Enduring Freedom» in the 2010s.
The victims and destruction committed by NATO, the death of his own bride, an Afghan woman, and close comrades in that moloch, contribute to a turning point in the consciousness of the hero, a reassessment of the reasons for the bloody confrontation. Disappointed in the actions of NATO, not wanting to be part of the cynical military machine, he resigns from military service and returns to his historical homeland in Russia. Having found here the two surviving fighting friends of his father, our hero finds himself in a twistiness with them. By the gratitude of fate for the hardships and overcomes he has experienced, at the end of history he will be the new happiness found in Russia.
