Runtu: Not much to tell. I’m now in my 70s, have way too many kids, and live in the Washington, DC, area. I write for a living, but unless you consider technical writing creative, this is the only creative writing I do. Forgive me for venting, but I work with a crazy person.
I really like my job. The work is interesting and challenging, the field (oilfield services) is booming, and the people I work with are great. With one exception.
My team lead is insane.
I knew she had issues long before I started working here. We worked together years ago at a large software company in Provo.
I soon found out that she was bipolar; some days she would come in looking like a chihuahua on speed, and other days she would close her door and lay her head down on the desk.
Please don’t think I’m ripping on the mentally ill (if you’ve read my blog at all, you know I have experience with mental illness).
She also receives revelations (she says she can sense “shifts in the universe”).
A couple of months into that first job, I walked past her office to see if she was in, and seeing that she wasn’t, I continued my way.
A few minutes later, she called and said,
“I saw what you were doing. You were checking up on me!”
Apparently, she had been following me as I walked, and she accused me of spying on her.
I told her I couldn’t work that way if she was going to distrust me that much. Another time she informed me that she’d had a revelation that she was going to marry a coworker who was already married (what’s scary is that she did end up marrying him).
After about six months, my team lead and I had figured out how to work with each other, and we managed to get a lot of good things done.
We also became pretty good friends. We still are.
Fast forward 9 years, and I’m working with her again (she recruited me from Texas to move back here). But something has changed.
For whatever reason, she doesn’t work. She gets next to nothing done, and what she does finish is of very poor quality, so much so that the other team member and I spend most of our time redoing her projects.
A typical day for her reminds me of a bizarre Mormon version of “Office Space.” She comes in around 10:00 or 10:30 in the morning; works on her Gospel Doctrine lesson; looks up knitting and cross-stitch patterns on the Internet; runs errands for a couple of hours; interrupts me at least 5-10 times to complain about her husband’s ex-wife, talk about her dogs, or explain her latest Gant chart for our team; and then goes home at 5:00.
I’ve taken to putting on headphones when I’m working, but even that doesn’t work.
I’ll be working quietly and suddenly I’ll have the distinct impression someone is talking to me; I’ll turn around, and her face will be inches from the back of my head.
Sometimes she brings in her sugar gliders, which she keeps in a pouch inside her bra (shudder).
Yesterday my other colleague and I gave a demonstration of a new technology we hope to use at work.
We worked very hard to get it done, and of course our team lead had nothing to do with any of it.
In the meeting, it was clear who had done the work, but she kept inserting herself into the discussion with totally irrelevant items, as if to say, “Don’t ignore me! I matter!”
In short, I spend every day at work trying to work around my team lead instead of with her.
Who knows what today will bring?
Of course, I don’t know because it’s not 10:30 yet.
