How many times have I heard people say that,
even if Mormonism isn’t true,
it’s still “the best way to raise a family”?
The latest comes in an email a friend received:
“I believe that the church is the best way to raise a family. And if so (if you thought that way too) then what harm could it do really? I’m talking about today’s modern day church. Not the 100’s of years ago stuff. That to me doesn’t matter.”
I can’t tell you how much this annoys me.
As members of the LDS church, we were taught that truth mattered;
in fact, truth was the most important thing in the world.
If we knew the truth, we would know who we were, how to live our lives, and what our destiny was.
Now we’re being told that the church “as it was” doesn’t matter.
Who cares if the church was founded on lies and deception?
It’s what the church is today that matters.
Let’s say that we ignore what the church was and focus on what it is today.
From my perspective it is a large corporation that uses guilt
and shame to manipulate people into supporting its goals.
They used to tell us that “the family is the basic unit of the church.”
I always thought that meant that the church’s goal was to support families, but that’s entirely wrong.
What they mean is that the family’s goal is to support the church.
Families that provide financial and material support to the growth and income of the church have value in Mormonism;
those families that do not support the church’s aims have no value.
The church is also sex-obsessed,
and I’m convinced that this obsession is merely
a tool to get people to stick with the program:
if you can shame people for their natural desires,
you can get them to do anything.
A friend of mine who is a bishop put it this way:
“The guilt I have had over masturbation and the hostility that has been created in my mind and heart towards my wife (who was sexually active before she was a member) has been incredible. Maybe some of it was my hang ups but it has taken a long time to get over some of this stuff, and I cannot say I am entirely over it all.”
To think that a bishop in his 40s is still struggling with shame over such a trivial issue ought to tell us something.
The guilt they generate is used to drive people to do more and more for the church. Church “callings” take people away from their families, mostly for endless meetings.
We spent three hours in meetings on Sunday, and then every weekday morning in seminary, wasted more time in meetings with their own acronyms (BYC, PEC, HFPE, etc.), cleaned the chapel on Saturdays, went to the temple at least monthly, did Family Home Evening on Monday nights, and spent our spare time reading our scriptures.
And the guy from LDS Family Services says we aren’t a driven people?
But you know what? I was perfectly fine living my life this way until I discovered what the church was.
Joseph Smith founded a religion with three basic goals:
get money for Joseph Smith,
provide power for Joseph Smith,
and get Joseph Smith laid.
Nothing Joseph Smith ever claimed to be from God stands up to scrutiny, and yet they want us to believe that we should put ourselves through the crucible of Mormonism because it’s the best way to raise our families.
As a friend of mine put it,
“It could be argued that the Mormon church is a checklist of BAD ways to raise a family. But to be fair, there are plenty of even worse ways out there, so the Mormon church ends up looking neutral. And to a believer, neutral is as good as perfect.”
