Over on a Mormon apologetics board, an unbeliever asked what people thought their lives would be like if they didn’t have the church.
Some of the responses are quite revealing and a little disturbing.
Here are a few of the responses:
“Were I never exposed to the gospel
and an interest was never perked,
then I would probably be
amoral and an athirst.
I would likely be a hermit with no reason for even wanting/trying to socialize.
I don’t want to say that I’d be
inclined to criminal activity,
but I think it would be
a real possibility.”
“I had a hard time even contemplating where I’d be without the Church
(it was a real brain twister for me).
I’d almost certainly be living in some kind of sin
(not necessarily doing drugs or being promiscuous)!
But I know that I, for one, would be a very confused
and disillusioned person if I were not a member of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
It gives purpose, reassurance, meaning, and direction to my whole life.
I love everything about this Church”
“I know the church has kept me on the straight and narrow, when I would be tempted to experiment worldly things.
God has made much more from my life than I ever could.
The church gives us optimism when it normally wouldn’t abide.
It teaches forgiveness, love and tolerance especially for more difficult people.
I love this church and
everything that it has brought
into my life!
It rocks.”
This stuff makes me wonder if I were that fearful, that dependent, when I was a believer, and I suppose I was.
We were taught our whole lives that we would be
nothing without the blessings of the church;
we would end up like “the world,” which we
imagined was full of promiscuous drug addicts
with no morals or ethics.
Not long ago, a woman gave a presentation
at BYU-Idaho warning of the dangers of apostasy:
her husband had lost his testimony,
ended up divorced, doing drugs,
and eventually committing suicide.
This is what happens to apostates.
I can relate to being a little disillusioned at this point
(I was much more so earlier on in the apostasy process),
but I’ve never felt any impetus to go out and
have indiscriminate sex and get drunk or high.
My life is still pretty boring.
But I also wonder why people think that life without
the church has no meaning or purpose.
Granted, when we were in the church, we believed we were part of something larger than life, the whole stone cut without hands thing.
The church did give us purpose and direction.
But that direction was really nothing more than pointing us toward furthering the church’s goals, not necessarily our goals or humanity’s improvement.
For me, anyway, leaving the church has helped me be more focused on doing good, rather than doing what I’m told. There’s a big difference.
In the end, some people do end up falling apart
when the facade of Mormonism crumbles.
But for most of us, when the make-believe gave way
to reality, it opened up a whole new world
that we didn’t even know was out there.
I say, “I love reality! It rocks!”
