Lev Tolstoy Three Thieves

     Once a fellow was going at the fair to sell a donkey and a goat. The goat wore a small bell around its neck.
There were three thieves who had seen the fellow and one of them said:
- I will have stolen the goat the way that the fellow won't notice it has disappeared.
The other thief said:
- I bet the donkey will be gotten right out from under this guy's nose, exactly with these hands.
The third one said:
- Also Your art isn't good enough! I bet all the dress will be stolen and this fellow will be squeezed dry with these two hands precisely.
    
     The first thief had sneaked up on the goat, he took off its small bell and bound it together with the donkey's tail. Thus the goat was silently carried away to the nearest green fields.
      At the time the fellow reached the bend, he has seen the goat disappeared and he was searching for it. At this time, the second thief had came and asked what does he search for. The fellow said that the goat was stollen.
The second thief said:
- I saw your goat. There was a man who walked into the nearest forest just now, with your goat in his hands. You could catch up with him.
The fellow gave chase asking the thief to look after the donkey before he will be back. Thus, the second thief stole the donkey.
      At the time the fellowhad come back and saw there wasn't nor the man neither the donkey, he cried loudly and walked his way.
      Soon, he had seen a man who set near the pond and cried also. Thus, the fellow came and asked him about his sorrow. The man said that he was obliged to deliver the bag of gold at the near town, however he was tired doing his way, he had slept and he pushed the bag into the pond within his sleep and the bag had sunk into.
The fellow asked why he doesn't go in water to take his bag out of water.
The man answered:
- I can't swim, also I have got rabies. However I am ready to pay twenty pounds to someone who will take the bag out of water.
The fellow got happy and he thought:
- God! You give me a chance to get some money in return for my loss!
He took off all his dress and leaped into water. However, he hadn't found any bag of gold there, also he hadn't found his dress after he came out from water, being just wet with his tears.
      That was the third thief, who has stolen the dress.

Лев Толстой. Сказка «Три вора»

    Один мужик вёл в город продавать осла и козу. На козе был бубенчик. Три вора увидали мужика, и один сказал:
— Я украду козу, так что мужик и не заметит.
    Другой вор сказал:
— А я из рук у мужика украду осла.
     Третий сказал:
— И это не трудно, а я так всё платье с мужика украду.

     Первый вор подкрался к козе, снял с неё бубенчик и привесил к хвосту осла, а козу увёл в поле. Мужик на повороте оглянулся, увидал, что козы нет, стал искать.
     Тогда к нему подошёл второй вор и спросил, чего он ищет. Мужик сказал, что у него украли козу. Второй вор сказал:
— Я видел твою козу: вот сейчас только в этот лес пробежал человек с козою. Его можно поймать. Мужик побежал догонять козу и попросил вора подержать осла. Второй вор увёл осла. Когда мужик вернулся из лесу и увидал, что и осла его нет, он заплакал и пошёл по дороге.
     На дороге, у пруда, увидал он — сидит человек и плачет. Мужик спросил, что с ним? Человек сказал, что ему велели отнести в город мешок с золотом и что он сел отдохнуть у пруда, заснул и во сне столкнул мешок в воду. Мужик спросил, отчего он не лезет доставать его? Человек сказал:
— Я боюсь воды и не умею плавать, но я дам двадцать золотых тому, кто достанет мешок. Мужик обрадовался и подумал: «Мне Бог дал счастье за то, что у меня украли козу и осла». Он разделся, полез в воду, но мешка с золотом не нашёл, а когда он вылез из воды, его платья уже не было.
Это был третий вор: он украл и платье.
