The Short Line

God damn it! These are just three simple words, pronounced day in and day out by millions of people all around the world, in all kinds of situations. This line may not cause any harm unless used at the wrong time and definitely with the incorrect intonation.
They were both sitting in that studio of theirs, surrounded by the things that were more of a stress builder than useful. They hadn’t gotten out of bed ever since they woke-up after midday that day. They had their coffee in the bed and were just kind of lying around relaxing and talking about nothing special.
That harmless conversation started turning into a conflict, as usual, as soon as they brought up ideological aspects of life into it. They both stubbornly kept on pushing their own points of view, until the temperatures started rising. He said: “Hey don’t you think I know what you’ve been doing all your life?”
She angrily asked: “And what have I been doing?”
He just shook his head and said: “I know and you know that I know, but I’m not gonna say it all.”
She pressed: “Yeah right! You’re not gonna say it, because you know no shit.”
He raised his voice a little: “You’re mistaken if you think so! Your problem is that you’ve been acquainted to assholes all your life.”
She sat-up and furiously said: “You don’t know whom I had been acquainted to and you have no right to say anything about it!”
He mocked: “Oh does it hurt you to see the real faces from your past?
Her eyes got lit-up with anger. She jerked his hand off saying: “How can you judge someone you don’t even know? And how can you know my life better then I do?”
He said: “You wanna tell me that it still matters for you to hear anything unpleasant about the people who as you say mean nothing to you now? Keep on! Adore your past! ”
She looked him in the eyes and said: “If you don’t have anything to adore, it’s not my headache. Yes! I do remember my past.”
He lost control. He yelled: “God damn it!”
With that he just jumped out of bed, put on his jeans and went to the bathroom. Getting back the grip on himself, he came out to the room and saw her standing by the closet dressing-up. He could figure-out what she was up to, but to make sure he asked: “Are you going somewhere?”
She turned around and buttoning up her cardigan said: “Yes. I’m gonna take a walk.”
He couldn’t say anything right away. He just sat down on the edge of the bed and threw his hands over his head. Right then the whole scenario ran through his head. Just then did he understand what he had done. His whole world was about to fall to pieces right there and right then. All that he dreamt of and all that he had achieved, regarding her, was about to go down the drain. He knew that she wasn’t just going for a walk. He knew that she was about to leave him. He could feel the pain of losing the fairy of his own world. Then the fear struck him. A chill ran down his spine. The worst of his fears was about to come to life. He was about to be left alone. The one and only angle of his heaven was about to desert him. It took so long to get her and it took so little to lose her. He was regretting ever yelling: “God damn it!”
He opened his eyes and saw that she wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Fear caught him. He ran to the bathroom, opened the door and only after seeing her could he control his shiver. He stood there looking at her, while she painted her lips. He didn’t know what to say. He was clueless. A lot of possible words were running through his head, bit he was not sure about which one to utter. Finally he said: “I didn’t mean to offend you.”
She turned to him and said: “But you did!”
He asked: “What offended you so much?”
She said: “You know I hate when someone yells at me and just a little time ago you yelled at me.”
He explained: “I didn’t mean to yell at you. By the way you yell at me often. I don’t like it also, but I never walk out on you because of that.”
While he was saying that, she got back to the room, picked up some other make-up accessory and headed back to the bathroom. He came out after her, completing his sentence in the process and then headed back with her. Getting back in the bathroom, she said: “Yeah you didn’t mean to, but you did and if I’ll allow you to do this once you’ll do it always and I don’t want that.”
He threw his head down, thought about something for a while and then said: “Don’t tell me that you think that I’m a jerk who screams at you all the time?”
She turned her head a little, put down her eye shadow and said: “No you don’t always, but you’ve started to do so today.”
He said: “I don’t react so abruptly and seriously when you scream at me. Don’t I even have the right to commit a mistake?”
She complained: “I do apologize, whenever I lose nerve, but someone doesn’t even care to do so.”
Only then did the fear of loss backed off a little bit, because till then he was ready to even lay his head down to avoid losing her. He smiled a bit and said: “Don’t you feel that I regret what I did?”
She looked at him quietly for a while and then turned back to the mirror. He said: “I believed that you could understand it without words. I believe that feelings brought out in words are not as strong as the ones which are passed silently.”
She started towards the bathroom door saying: “You didn’t yell silently! If you yelled in words, why can’t you regret your actions in words also?”
He put his left arm around her, bringing her closer right there in the bathroom door and uttered the best short line: “Forgive me!”
