The Secret of real listening
Here is the story of a young man which may help to understand what is the real listening all about.
It has happened in the US during the great depression. It was a time when to find a job could mean to save a life. Why? It is very simple. If you have a job you have money to buy a food or anything else for your life. If you don’t have a job you have no money and you have nothing to eat. You can’t buy clothes to put on or even a coal to heat your house in a winter time.
In that difficult time many people died some because of hunger some because of cold.
Yet let’s get back to our story of a young man. His name was Ramo. He was sitting at his cold apartment and reading the Newspaper in order to find a job. His occupation was a radio-operator but he was very young and the time was rough.
Suddenly he saw in the advertisement column a little note about that somebody needs a radio-operator for his company.
The meeting with those who would like to get that job was appointed on the next day at 10 am.
And he knew well that there will be many people with the desire to go through the test and win the only vacancy.
So Ramo came there at 6 am thinking that this is very early in the morning. He wanted to be sure that he will be first in line. Yet when he arrived he was surprised that the room was already full of people. Amazed he entered in and asked who the last person in line for the test is. And then he stayed near the entrance door waiting and watching for the people around.
Across the large room toward the right there was another door with a sign, “The Boss”. Under the sign there was a piece of paper written by hand. “You are not allowed to come in without an invitation”.
Right in front of him two people were sitting and talking. One has said, - I’m sure I will get that job.
How do you know? – his companion asked of him. Well…, Because I’m very good. I was the best radioman in US army for many years. And I have recommendation like nobody else has.”
“Uh! Wow! That’s cool. But I think there are others here with a pretty good level too”, - his companion doubted.
Another three people at the left were communicating with each other using the dot and dash code. And our young man heard as one of them sent the message to two others.
“You see I can dot out 320 letters in a minute”. Yet one of them using the same dot and dash code responded with the following answer.
“Man it’s nothing. I can type two different texts with both hands simultaneously almost the same fast.”
The third one said, - “But I can use my two hands and one foot in the same time and type three different texts.”
There were many in that room and all of them very busy fellowshipping with each other or practicing their radio-operation skill. Only Ramo was quietly standing near the entrance door and listening what was going on in that room.
Many others were still arriving and coming in. The crowd was getting bigger and a noise stronger.
The time was passing buy slowly. Versable
Suddenly the young man walked across the room toward the door of the boss and went through. Nobody paid much attention. Everybody knew quite well that if the paper on the door says, “You are not allowed without an invitation”, - you better not even try or you lose your vacancy before you have a chance to get the one. But after a while Ramo came out of the boss cabinet and said out loud.
“Gentlemen thank you for coming. The test time is over. The only vacancy for that job is filled with me and the rest of you may go home”.
And then everybody started to talk at ones making an incredible noise. They were so much frustrated and offended by the Ramo’s statement. They yelled at him and screamed at him. And he was just standing there and smiled.
When they all finally stopped that chaos, the young man has pointed on the door of the chief and said, - “Do you read what that paper is saying? “You are not allowed to come in without an invitation”. While all of you here were busy with each other the chief came to the opposite side of the door and quietly knocked out a message, - “If you hear me now, come in. You are invited”.
No one heard it but me, that’s why I’m accepted and that job is mine.”
Are we going to listen to the Chief’s voice? Are we going to hear His quiet message in the midst of multitude messages of this world?
He stands at the door of our heart and knocks. He said in His Word,
“Here I am I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in and eat with him and he with Me.
