Dear Mr. President,
It looks you are coming back to your ideas that you have formerly expressed. You claim that Russians are guilty in all that sort of turmoil that is happening in the Middle East.
I am pretty well aware of the fact that you are a peace-maker. That special handshake between Rabin and Arafat made you sightless. You consider that the region has not altered since early 90’s. However, the world has gone forward since then. But, unfortunately, it has not moved into the positive direction. Terrorism has made a step ahead when ‘human bombs’ turned into real GRAD rockets.
You feel yourself committed to the shabby ideas of ‘just peace’ in the Middle East since you can’t forget those ‘sunny and cloudless days’ when quite a number of Israelis have been successfully ‘brainwashed’ as a result of those ‘high expectations’ for peace in mid – 1990’s.
I’ll never ever forget one episode. As a high school teacher I took part in an attempt to ‘bridge the gaps’ between Jews and Arabs by means of the so-called ‘people diplomacy’ in a well-known for its ‘left’ ideology Kfar Blum Kibbutz. That was a weekend. We all gathered in a hall with that special thrill of ‘high expectations’ for a breakthrough…
Suddenly all our attention was once and for all diverted to the TV set. The anchor announced about a failed attempt to free an Israeli captive Nachshon Waxman (by the way, a US citizen!).
A minute later all that desire to ‘negotiate’ peace on both sides had vanished. As far as I am concerned (together with most of those who arrived in Israel from the former Soviet Union) it has disappeared forever.
And now, after ONE YEAR of your lame attempt to put all the blame for failures to bring both sides of the conflict to a common ground of communication you feel like falling into the same trap!
Please wake up, Mr. President! I guess it’s worth recalling an English wisdom: ‘A dog never comes back to its vomit’.
