A Little Drop

It happened in a province, where a small, but inquisitive girl, named Greta, lived with her parents. Once, Greta went to the countryside with all her family. One morning she went to the woods. The weather was foggy; the larks were singing high in the sky, the woodpecker was drumming marvelous forest melodies somewhere among the boughs, and the frogs were croaking loudly in the swamps. As she harkened to the wonderful diversity of the sounds in the forest, she heard little drops of water, falling down from a maple into the brook. Greta approached the maple and gently put her palm under the leaf, and one of the drops fell onto her palm. The girl took a good look at it: the drop was iridescent and miraculous. Suddenly Greta heard a reedy voice, which said, “Hello! I am so pleased to see you!” “Who are you?” Greta inquired. “It is me, the drop on your palm”, the voice continued. “I came from a faraway land, called Egypt; there is a river which is called the Nile, which has a great multitude of drops, such as I. It is one of the greatest rivers of the World. All the water in nature circulates, and this movement is eternal, as is the Universe. When the Sun is scorchingly hot, the water vaporizes, and millions of drops like me go up into the heights of the heavens in the form of steam, and thus clouds appear. Then, the wind blows and carries the clouds to faraway countries where they fall in the form of rain and thunderstorms. Then this water vaporizes again. This has been happening since the creation of the Earth and always will be so”. “How interesting!” Greta exclaimed. “And now I must return… Maybe, we will meet again”, the drop continued. “I will miss you”, Greta replied. “Goodbye, Greta”, said the drop as it fell into the nearby flowing brook.
Feeling a little sad, the girl went to the house where her parents had prepared a tasty lunch for her. She decided not to tell them what had happened in the forest, but instead kept it inside her heart as a marvelous life experience.
