A Square Room

A square room with only one small window somewhere closer to the ceiling and a big wooden bed in the middle of it. In the dim light pouring from this window one can see vague silhouettes of two people. There are only two of them on the edge of the world, sitting in front of each other and trying to warm themselves with the heat of each other’s bodies, desperate and hopeless.

She
"You are sitting next to me and it may seem that we are close to each other, but I know there is a universe between us, freezing cold and empty.
I do not ask questions any more. I am looking inside of your eyes, hoping to find an answer.
I’m sinking into the emptiness of your dark eyes and, as a drowning man who catches at a straw, I’m eager to catch at anything: your habit, your desire, your jealousy… But all these things are too fragile to bear the weight of my hopes, they break inside my hands and I continue falling deeper and deeper. Into the darkest corners of your soul I discover the things I never wanted to know. I see the monsters of your past walking out there, your uncanny fears, wildly screaming at me… I’m not scared of any of them – I'm too obsessed with my own needs...
It’s so fuckin’ cold inside of your soul and I know well enough that I’ll never find what I’m looking for.
I just feel I cannot survive without it.
And I’m drowning in the depth of your eyes."

He
"I know what you want. I know it as well as the fact that I can never give it to you.
I know the words you want to hear, I just cannot bring my lips to utter them.
For some reason I cannot ever lie to you.
You look at me as if I am a King and it only makes me realize what a nonentity I am.
You look into my eyes and I have to make an effort in order not to run away.
I want you to understand what is inside and I want you to detest me for this.
I want you to leave me and I cannot tell you to go away.
The only thing I know is that if I’m to be buried under the ruins of my soul, I want you to stay safe, far away from here…"

The two in the room keep silent, blankly looking at each other. The boy puts out his hand to touch the girl’s face. She smiles faintly. Their bodies come even closer and they fall into each other’s embrace. There are only two of them on the edge of the world against the army of uncanny imaginary monsters…
