The Game
“Initialize the potential characteristics of your neo-unit”. I’ve been playing this for so long, and still can’t get used to the fancy System lingo.
I create a new character. The name, looks and race- I set to random: it doesn’t matter in the game. The characteristics of intelligence and health are set a bit above the average, on the expense of dexterity and strength. From the list of potential skills I set the preference on swordfight and shieldbearing, because during the last game my character died in battle as a result of lacking those very skills. The initial funds- to the max… then again, it won’t be so interesting- so I reduce it by half. Now to set the difficulty level. I’ll raise it a bit, because I’m a skilled player by now and the game grows boring when everything’s easy to get.
Oops, the health points have dropped, so I’ll have to sacrifice my amazing charisma to keep my character from being too sickly. The monetary level has decreased sadly, but that’s just a matter of time. The skills have cost me the learning speed. I don’t feel like raising it on the expense of ambidexterity, but otherwise I just might not make it from the first location at all. Fine, if I’ve decided to try something serious, I’ll have to work harder to get something worthwhile. Although, that’s the major idea of the game.
I check the parameters over again; seems we’re good to go. The starting point doesn’t matter to me- let the System choose it by itself, according to the chosen level. And now, I submerge into the game, trying on the new body of my “neo-unit”.
Somewhere in Canada, an Asian couple of middle class gave birth to an utterly normal, healthy kid, with increased potential ability for swordfight and shieldbearing.
