Emanuel Abraham Rosen - early Israeli resident
Born in Philadelphia, Pensylvania, in 1925 over his parent’s drug store at Front and Noris streets, he was the son of Haim Solonon and Rebecca Kotzin Rosen. Descended from both Lubavitch and Misnaged rabbinic dynasties and growing in a staunchly Zionist home, he spoke Hebrew before English and was both a yeshiva student and active member oh Habonim.
Drafting during World War II, he served in the Philippines and with with the Occupation Force in Japan. Discharged in 1946, he attended Ursinus College, was on the football and swimming teams, and was active in organization “Materials for Palestine (later for Israel)” and Zionist Organization of America. He graduated with with a Bachelor of Science of Science in 1949.
Back to Israel ‘oficially’. Emanuel Rosen went to Kibbutz Kfar Giladi as a Habon im member, worked for Kupat Holim’s Zammenhoff Clinic inTel-Aviv, then moved to Jerusalem to set up the tablet production line for pharmaceutical Rafa Laboratories during the day; at night he wrote , produced and directed radio programs for Kol Zion LaGolah, Israel’s foreign language broadcasts.
Returning to the US to attend St. Louis College of Pharmacy, he earned a BS in Pharmacy in 1953 and Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the University of Kansas City School and Pharmacy in 1956.
During this period he married Golda Singer Rosen and established a family: son Nathan Aaron, daughter Miriam Beth and son Daniel Jay.
A licensed Pharmacist, Emanual Rosen’s career expanded to include Research and Development, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Production, Regulatory Affairs, and a stint of lecturing on Pharmacology at Temple University. He worked for. Among others, Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia, and set up Federated Pharmaceuticals’ Jamaica, West Indies, during manufacturing plant, appearing in LIFE Magazine’s 1960 article on Jamaica.
Following the Six Day War he worked with Abic Laboratories in Israel, then went on to become the first Jew to receive a key tj the Executive washroom at Parke Davis, in Detroit, in 1968, before founding EARE’ Consulting Service to serve the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device industries.
Fulfilling his own and his parent’s lifelong dream, Emanuel Rosen finally made Aliyah in 1974 with his second wife, Ruby Sugarman Lassoff Rosen. Moving to Eilat, he w2as made Chief Pharmacist oh the Josephtal Medical Center and Chief Southern Regional Pharmacist [ from Moshav Paran Sharem-el-Shiekh] for Kupat Holim Calit. They bought a house which Ruby re-designed and he and his friends rebuit by hand, moving in with their two mini- Schnauzers in 1978. His retirement in 1968 was followed shortly by Ruby’s death after a long battle with cancer.
Re-activating European Associqtion of Resource Economists (EARE) Consulting Service, he went on to become the foremost authority (president) on U.S. Food and Drug Administration (F,D.A.) regulations in Israel, and meet his third wife, Siri.
His achievements as a Regulatory Consultant included receiving approval for an astonishing 90% of all section 510(k) applications made by EARE’ – including one approval in a record 17 days – and co-organizing the first and only US Food and DRUG administration Seminar I, Israel given entirely by active FDA personel.
He loved Eilat, it’s desert and sea, and was involved in Project Renewal, AACII, SPCA, and Civil Defence. He was a member of the first Masorti (Conservative) synagogue in Eilat and was a founder of Masorti “ TAGEL ARAVA - the Center for Tradition and Change in Eilat” under the direction of Rabi Shmuel Shaish.
He was a Free Mason, following his uncles Mayer and Jach Kotzin, imitated in 1960 into the Friendly Lodge of Jamaica. He aqdvanced to the Seventh Degree and was a Provost and Judge in the King Solomon Lodge of Perfection as well as a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Select Master Mason and Super-Exellent Mason.
Children and animals loved and rusted him, children especially of stage magic, started as a teenager, stage magic, encourage under the tutelage of the famous Stage Nagican Dante’ and continued through college, the army, etc.
He is survived by his wife, Siri {Shir-El} Jones-Rosen of Eilat Israel, on Nathan Aaron Rosen and wife, Priva Simon, of New-York Cuty, Daniel Jay Rosen and wife, Deborah, Kansas City, Missouri, daughter, Miriam Beth Wallicr and husband, Mark. Of Lincoln, Nebraska; related Rosen-Werner Zwillinger families of Angeles, California; and six grandchildren, Jacob. Benjamin, Rachel, Shoshana, Ramar and Mordechai, as well as his step-daughter Abie Lassoff White of Seattle, Washington, adopted daughter Sarah Koren of Herzliya, Israel and brother Noam Rosen, of Philadelphia.
Emanuel Rosen was buried in 2008 in Eilat, Isreel, overlooki,g the city, desert and Sea and next to his beloved second wife Ruby, of San-Francisco and and Eilat. He was preceded in death by his previous wife Golda Singer Rosen, of Kansas City, Missouri.
The family suggests contribution be made to a charity of choice or to”TAGEL ARAVA – the Center for Tradition and Change in Eilat”, P.O.Box 178, Eilat, Israel.
