Fated to Love Heartily Chapter 3 Approaching

Chapter 3 Approaching
Chris had to accept his mother’s suggestion and for the next day he went to the Firm ‘GRANITE’ to have a serious chat to discus the further plans about his carrier. Having come up to the large green gates, Chris felt a little shivering under his feet and it looked like the Earth flew away. Just to meet with unknown man ‘and by the way he was a boss Steven and how to plan the scheme of the conversation just to be a winner. At least, Chris thought in such way and followed his walking there. Near the second wicket, Chris had been met by an old man with two dogs. That man was as guarder there and Chris asked him: “Excuse me, my name is Chris and I have been invited by your chief to have a communication to deal with you.” “Good.” said the guarder Tim, and they shook theirs hands. Tim showed the way to the chief’s study onto the first floor. Passing through the yard Chris saw the men and they were fulfilled their different actions; two men were fetching a big glided stone for drilling the holes; other one nailed the wooden boards to fix the granite to cut it off for the spare pieces by a big steel saw; one more man held a huge perforator in a process of drilling to crack a big stone. And at last the boss saw Chris and cried to him by waving with his hand: “Hay, I can see you there, come on, rise upstairs I’m expecting for you.” Chris finished his exploring around the yard and rose upstairs. Steven gave him his hand and greeted Chris. Then he invited him into his office to talk: “So, have you already seen my territory?” “Yes, I have.” answered Chris. “Well, glad to meet you here. Likewise I had been told about you, but only good and positive characteristic. You behave yourselves, your reaction is adequate, but mean thing is: you don’t use the hard drinks and nicotine, do you?” asked Steven and re-put the several paper-files onto the brim of the table. “Yes sir, I do.” responded Chris.
“Ok, at the moment my work is always going on without stopping. I have sixteen worker-men and they are the perfect collective-group. The schedule is not alternative: starts at eight; ends at five; breaks at one; coming late is not pleased; five days a week of work, but Saturday and Sunday are days-off. All my workers get the month salary. Because I heard your Principle refused to pay money, here of the contrary, everyone does not complain. Now about our affairs, did you see the huge stones in the yard?” “Yes sir, I did.” said Chris. “We make the monuments for the graves and for the tombs. The people pass away, and the relatives want to see theirs graves accurately. Of course they order the single and the double memorials. The stones are very expensive, I usually buy up the charged lorries in the wholesaling system paying in cash or money against the documents, then they sign out a bill of loading and carry out their direct delivery right here. Unloading makes by our side. Sure, concern exists. More even, sometimes we must wait the couple days there, because the competitors transfer their money beforehand and conclude an orally bargain. It calls the cash-delivery. Ah! Doesn’t matter! So, here an application-blank, please fill it in, and in a day I hope we would establish our relationships, you shall start to carry out your obligations in quality. And in a month I’m going to construct two buildings-garages: one will be for painting and the second will be as the work-shop. For I have already bought the Special Equipment for balancing of the wheels. In details about it more later. So, now your interview is passed. You are well informed. Bring your experience-book and I’ll register you.” Chris saw off with Steven and at once he directed to the Plant to stamp and to write out his experience-book.
At the Personal-office he asked his earned money and some stamping into his experience-book, but two ladies with the big interest began to ask many questions: “Wow. Where? In what way did you look for your new position? Is this far from here? What will you do there? Is it difficult to work there or not? And how much money will they pay there?” For all these questions Chris replied in one variant: “Ladies, at first I’d like to register and to work there a little bit, but in the further short period of time I’ll come and will tell it to you, ok.? And now, please do as I’m asking you. I need my stamped experience-book with all its noting and my earned money, for it is my application not to work here any more in my file, here it is.” One of lady Viola said: “Everything is according to the papers we’ll make an arrangement and what about money, you’ll get them in a month. And by the way, how’s your hand, is it still in a painful condition?” Chris quoted: “Sometimes it is, but I try to keep it and avoid of the heavy lifting not to damage it anew.”
So after this long talk, the ladies registered Chris’s leaving from the Plant. And Chris went to his place to just relax with watching on TV. There was an interesting movie “The Serenade of the Sunny Valley 1947.” Chris was watching for this film with his great desire. There was a nice sound and a good pronunciation to have a very nice assistance to hear and to catch something. ‘English, that is all I need. I’ll achieve my aim and will master this language completely.’ was speculating Chris during his watching on TV. Then he switched off TV-set, laid on a sofa, put a soft pillow under his head, covered himself with a warm blanket and fell asleep. He had been sleeping for two hours and woke up from frying something in the kitchen. It was his mother Helen and she cooked a dinner. She came from work as she had her dinner time. Chris got up and directed to the bathroom to wash his face. His mother saw him and asked: “Well, did you have a contact eye with that boss.” ”Yes mom, I did.” responded Chris and told to her everything he knew. ”Of course, this work is not easy, but we need money now, and may be you’ll enter to the University.” said Helen and then they had their dinner together.
Having told about everything Chris’s mother went to continue to work and Chris took his conversation-book in English and started to study the new expressions, for he wanted to add his preserve of the fresh lexicon. He made himself learn too much. But his next day also passed in the same procedure. And when, the working day came, Chris as usually appeared as the first one of all there. In a few minutes he saw Steven’s vehicle’s approaching. Steve drove his ‘BMW’ himself and on the passengers' seats was his wife Dora and a pair of other workers. Dora worked there as a bookkeeper and represented all affairs of her husband’s Company. She counted the salary for everyone and always got ready all papers which were necessary to direct the transporting of the stones. Also she paid all withholding taxes and created the organizational charts of planning for the furtherest time. The working structure of this firm was steady and everyone was glad. Chris stood in the yard while the vehicle was parking. Then Steve and all the rest persons got out of a car and came to the guarder to say “Hi” and in a minute Steve shook his hand to Chris with saying: “It’s very kind of you not to be late. Did you bring you documents for registering?” “Yes sir.” quoted Chris and put his papers in a file onto Steve’s hand. ”Ok, I shall make and put the dates with some feeding the information into my computer. You may change your uniform and Ron will give you the followed instructions. Now, please start.” said Steve and made a forced smile with stepping upstairs to his study. Chris entered into the long corridor, passed it through, and found a little room for changing the uniform. He put on his old shirt, trousers and footwear and then he went outside. There he found Ron for clarifying, what to do. Ron was the oldest welder there, he asked Chris’s name and they went to weld the pipes at the edges of the repairing hole in the garage:
“You should hold these pipes tightly and I will weld them to the little metal tails for it will be a control stripe against the vehicles’ wheels deepening inside there. For not so long ago our el-car deepened in, the driver used some vodka and couldn’t drive it well. The chief ordered to take all measures of safety. So, hold this one and here, only shut your eyes and avoid the flashes, otherwise you may be blind.” “Thanks a lot” quoted Chris “For this situation is recognized to me. Once, one stupid man made me much harm in the same way. And it was an intent act from him. After it he laughed at me and tried to offend me in public.” “Oh, it’s horrible!” cried Ron and he commenced his welding. Chris turned his head with giving a glance onto the walls. There were the different painted placards with the schemes of the vehicles’ mechanisms and one calendar of 1996. While his exploring around, Ron has welded one pipe, then he hammered it to be certain with its fixing firmly. ”Ok, one pipe is set up, and now another, hold it anew!” commanded Ron. The second pipe was fixed by them as quicker as the first. “Well, our task is done in half. Now please, fetch me a pail with a red paint and we will decor them in striping. The pail is in the compressor’s room, hidden behind the wooden trunk. I’ve already prepared it in advance yesterday.” Chris went slowly there, switched on the light and looked for a bucket. He brought it to Ron and asked: “Where is a brush?”  Ron replied: “The brush is in the glass jar with some solvent, for it is in some other paint and it is becoming softer. Here it is, please.”
Chris pulled out a wet brush and daubed out the other paint against the walls. Then he drew the thin lines with a gray pencil keeping for white and for the red stripes quite apart. After time, he slowly began to varnish merely in red. His painting was looking like a lacquering with some reflection. But meantime, the boss decided to make an interval for his smoking and suddenly he stared at something shining. He did not realize it at all: “Wow, are you painting like a mirror, I have never seen such things before. How do you do it? It’s not possible to do this in such way. Please teach me. I’ve already varnished a lot of cars, but they didn’t shine as these pipes. You are outshone everyone here, I think, I shall accept you to work as a vehicles’ painter. My appreciation is approval to you. ”Chris couldn’t twinkle with an eye for it was unexpected case for him. He got up and said: “Sooth to say, it is a mystery thing for me. I paint and can feel it.” Having smiled Steve replied: “You will work here as a painter and no more words.” Then he lit another cigarette and ran quickly to his wife to tell her about it. Chris accomplished his first task and drew his boss attention to him.
‘No any claims, test is done and stipulation about engagement is confirmed. Easy going, easy doing.’ thought Chris and took the white paint for its turning between the painted in red. In three minutes Ron got his decision to control Chris’s painting. But when he entered into the garage he couldn’t believe his eyes. In front of the dirty box was a new pipe in its shining like a piece of some gold: “You have carried done it, haven’t you? Who did teach you to fulfill the tasks in such way. Now, we must clean this garage-box, otherwise our boss will not recognize this atmosphere here. Please, take a broom and we’ll start to sweep, but before you should wet it in some water not to dust around. Now I’ll open up the gates through out and we’ll commence our clearing against the spiders-webs on the walls and in the corners. And one more, here is a bottle with some water inside, please spray it onto the floor until the cement shall be proofed. After it, we’ll make some cement-mixing for putting several wall-tiles into the vehicles’ hole, we’ve got spares of them, so it was an order to decorate them.” Having commanded what to do, Chris and Ron quickly made an arrangement in the garage. “Oh, now we may come here with much pleasure, our chief will hire the builders for better decor and we shall repair the cars, in the good conditions. And now, I need your assistance to load the empty balloons into the trailer for filling them with some oxygen for my farther welding. The weight of one steel balloon is about 100 kg. After this filling in, the weight is changing for 105 kg. Did you understand its difference? Just this heavy steel corp is worked out for holding some power of pressure and some oxygen is spreading there inside. But on the top of a balloon there is a crane, it must be cleaned all the time; no oiling and other liquids mustn’t be there, for only one drop of some oil will lead to the explosions. Should always keep it clean!!! Even if your hands are in some butter, you’d better to wash them. Remark this one! So, at the moment we shall send our driver to fill them in.”
The driver came up to Ron for fixing the sign on the bills of the balloons’ loading. Then the driver started on his engine and went away. Chris decided to visit the other boxes and to speak with the workers. In a moment in front of his eyes he saw a girl with a long hairy ribbon. He couldn’t get, in which way did she appear here, for she was out before. Her name was Bella. She was so beautiful and pretty. Her blue eyes looked like two diamantes and her round face was so nice and sweet. Bella was calmed in her character and never lost her temper. Always was tidy and kind. Her age was 27 and she had a husband and a child. She had a little daughter and her daughter’s name was Anna. Chris felt something in his heart, it was a special feeling. At first he didn’t know about her at all, but later he knew everything. They met with each-other and had communications among them. Bella came here to work as a portraitist. She usually took her little spears and beat out the portraits on the monuments, but before she put somebody’s photo and copied it onto the flat polishing, then she looked at the picture while her beating. Her work was not so hard, but she could to turn her hand to this. Chris had a free hour for biting and he determined to ask about her becoming to be an artist and who taught her to copy the portraits exact sharply: “Bella, I wonder of your mastering to beat out in such way. Who was the teacher of your studying? It’s very interesting to keep an eye for you. Sometimes it looks like a real photo while making the pictures.
”Oh, it’s a long story.” continued Bella “There was one man Andrew couple years ago, his occupy was an artist, he did it. I was as his student and he taught me to do it. Tell the true, it was not so easy at first. I wasn’t attentive enough and thought merely in my dreams. Now I can beat out anything on the stones. Indeed, I didn’t study anywhere at all and I haven’t any degree, only school that’s all. Because, after finishing my school, I got married and my husband took me to Germany and we had been living there for five years. My husband’s name is Scot. He was a warder. And later we returned to Poland again and now he is searching for a new working place and I myself, is here. I need to bring up my daughter Anna and give for her the Higher Education.” Having heard this, Chris told to Bella all his story what has happened with him. But time was up and they were going on to work. In two hours the machine came with the balloons of some oxygen. Ron and Chris unloaded all heavy balloons and stored them into the little shelter which was behind the garages. This place always was in clean. And in a sudden minute, the chief appeared in front of them. ”Well, well, I see your good job. Now I shall tell to you the next task one. In a week, I’m going to erect two large buildings. That’s why I need your assistance for our daily working here. Payment will do. More one, eating and drinking also will do. The days will be hard and restless. Forget about your days-off, for we are going to open our huge business. We shall deal with the vehicles: to repair them, to adjust them and to paint them. I hope you know this doing exactly well. More even, I require from you: the good quality, the good carry done, and some coping with any turning a hair. This one is cleared for you, isn’t it?” “Yes sir.” quoted Ron and Chris together. ”We’ll try not to manage with all privations and it will be make everything accurately may not course risk of injury.” After these words, they shook theirs hands to each-other and walked into their different sides. Chris was not ready to work under pressure at that moment, but he hadn’t another way and he agreed of course.
One week later, Steve brought the red bricks for his future plans to build the accommodations. Two large trucks came to the yard in the Summer morning and all working team started to unload these trucks. Ron took an el-car and quickly took off all trays with the bricks before the chief’s coming to. The drivers thanked them for their intensive acting. Steve signed their bills of lading and commanded to locate these bricks near the ground floor. Then he called Chris with him and showed the cement-mixer. Ron helped Chris to wheel it out and they made the final adjustments. Chris took a hummer and knocked on the outer drum-side of the cement-mixer to scrape the old firmed cement-goo. But all these pieces Chris did not pull out, because he remained them for their further cement mixing. Then he connected the wires to the terminals and switched it on. The drum rolled and all mechanisms were in order. While all this procedure came one man, his name was Nick. He got out from his car and approached to the place of building: “Yes.” he said to himself: “It will be good erecting and I’ll do it.” Then he saw Chris and asked him: “Hi, are you new comer here? I didn’t see you here before. When did you appear here?” Chris responded: “Two weeks ago. I had been invited by Steve to work here and I’m glad of this.” Nick said anew: “I see, you’ll be my assistant while all this erecting, aren’t you?” “Yes sir.” said Chris “Ok.” continued Nick: “We’ll make a friendship among us. I mean to say, don’t be in a hurry. I need your cement mixing with two buckets into my steel-box and slowly fetching the bricks, ok.” “Yes sir.” said Chris. “I’ll do all your commands.”
So the first and the second week-ends passed hardly and daily erecting of the walls was fruitfully within two and a half weeks the walls of the garages were erected and were covered with the heavy cement-panels. Chris’s hands were white from some cement and his skin was dried. He couldn’t breath easy for he thought about good paying, but all his hopes had a nonsense. Steve paid a salary as usually and even didn’t give a hint for adding more. ‘I’ll be jiggered.’ thought Chris and got settled not to work at the week-ends more. ‘For what, I spent my plenty of time, I worked under pressure and here is my result, just usually payment.’ was going to speculate Chris, but his thoughts were in silence. Other workers had been paid in the same way and they were angry with their boss. He promised one thing, but did not keep his word.
Next month Steve wanted to tar the roof to make it the damp-proof against raining, for weather-forecast said about the heavy rain-bows, and he hadn’t any great desire to see his roof in wet. He borrowed an old barrel to boil some tar there. His friend let him to use it for fortnight. The crane of this barrel was so nasty with much tar, and the workers even could not turn it. Then Ron took wooden stick and flamed it around. With easy moving, like a fly, he buttered above and below the crane until its’ melting from some tar. Then he wiped off all pieces of rust which coated round the crane with some kerosene and strengthened it firmly with his welding, for there was one little groove. On the top of the garage the workers set up a lifted-mechanism for rising the buckets with some tar. Ron prepared the tows for every worker-man to tar the grooves betwixt the cement-panels. Then they strengthened the big boards under the roof against passing through some tar inside. They nailed with hooks into the boards and tied them with the cords above the panels. Two men were controlling near the flamed barrel which was with some tar inside. They were watching for the fire and they leaked out this black nasty mass into the prepared buckets, one man was fetching them and hooked to the rope which hung down from the lifted-mechanism. Another guy elevated them accurately and passed to others to pour some tar flatly grooving into the every hole. This long and difficult process lasted too much time. After accomplishing to tar the roof, the boss ordered to wash all buckets and to go to have some bite, for people were in acting without breaking. But nobody more could say a word, for it looked like they were in their slavery.
Chris went home and wept a little bit:  “No, no, no, I don’t eager to work here, it’s very difficult, must go to study; I have to; only studying; must get the Higher Education; I’ll prove it; I will reach my dream.” He didn’t stop to think about it at all. He ate and thought and the tears were running on his cheeks again. He wiped them off with a napkin and after eating he took his conversation-book and read the new topic to learn them by heart. This topic was about traveling and location at the hotel. Many new words remembered Chris at that time, for it looked like some water which rushed forward and put aside the heavy huge stones. Next day was as not easier as the previous one. The workers put onto the roof sixteen rolled tar-papers. Steve bought them to cover his garages completely. But before, they had to pick up all leaves, which fell down from the trees at night-time. Four men picked up all of them and spread the rolled tar-papers strait ahead then the yesterday’s procedure presided anew. After tarring, they lifted a tray with a heap of bricks to put them for pressing this tar-paper too tightly. Later Steve called to his friend to take his barrel away for instead of fortnight he managed with tarring within two days. His friend came to in an hour. Everyone was busy in his own job, but Chris suddenly saw their meeting. He seemed Steve’s paying to his friend. This paying was not in zloty, it was in dollars and the sum was well enough. ‘Not fairy of his side, his wage is normal and we were got round.’ thought Chris again, but at this case he hadn’t another way. Ron also knew about it and kept still. Chris found a free minute to take a place to have some rest, he went to Bella’s room and heard her beating out the next portrait and said with sadness: “Life is not fairy. I must be off. I won’t earn much money here, but to become a weak person it is possible, I wouldn’t like to...” Bella looked at him and said in respond: “Of course you must go further. This work is not for you. To fetch the heavy stones it’s a fool thing. You are too yang and healthy, just direct all your thoughts for the light future. Enter to Collage and be a student there. This work is not for you.” she said it twice and with all these words Chris thanked to Bella and went to help Ron.
Five months passed. The work was hard too: they put the cut spares flat pieces of granite inside of the boxes and set up an equipment for balancing of the wheels, but in other box was separated into two rooms with the metal gates. Then Steve bought the vacuum quad-wide-pipes to set up the ventilated system for blowing out some smoke and some paint while his painting not to breathe in all this pollution. When the quad-wide-pipes were fixed to the walls Steve commanded to drill them with the bit and the diameter must be about 10 mm. Chris did it, but Steve ordered to drill it one more time. The holes were too thin for some ventilating and at this time Chris used a bit with a doubled diameter 20 mm. Then Steve invited Nick to put the wall-tiles inside of his garage and made Ron weld the system of warming not to feel cold and for drying of the painted vehicles. In the middle of the garage was a hole with some water for clearing some spare dropping paint beneath the vehicles. When everything was ready they got settled to make the first step to polish a driver’s door. They puttied it and lacquered. His working system was not ideal: the ventilated system didn’t clear any air and the painted driver’s door did not dry. In spite of it, Steve did not correct anything more and decided to remain everything without changing more in that garage.
In a week later, the first client provided his car to lacquer it. Three workers began to putty it for its body was so muddy and ruffed. They blotted out it, but their fingers were bloody and they disliked it. They left this business and started to drill the stones. Chris took some sand-cloth paper and effaced the whole body of the vehicle within several hours. Then he poured some warm water into the pail and wiped off inside of the motor’s place. After time Steve came to him and did not believe his eyes: “Wow, you have finished this car-body within a day. Well done! Tomorrow will be paint it. Good!” With this promotion Steve offended everyone, even his wife’s brother Rodger. He was so angry with Chris and decided to make much harm. Rodger appeared here not so long. He came to visit his sister Dora and to work a little bit. This first car touched him too. But he couldn’t rub it clean. Next day, Steve prepared his garage and painted the first car “OPEL” himself. Then he gave his painting-mechanism to Chris to wash it. Chris did it, but then he put the painting-mechanism on the shelf and went to help the guys to fetch one huge monument to the client’s car to load it into the trailer. But after this act he heard Steve’s voice: “Who, who, I said, who has done it. I’ll make away everyone. None person needn’t here. Hell!” All workers were scared by Steve’s crying and they hadn’t any idea about these current events. They all ran towards to Steve to know the true. Steve kept crying: “Who, who, I said, who has done it. Somebody of you made a kick onto athe vehicle and smashed it, but it is not everything, one of you leaked out some paint and it is very expensive. Everyone will pay for it. Your salary will be short. Clear!!!” Chris was guessing at that moment, about somebody’s might have been done it, for he knew all bad manners of Steve’s wife’s brother Rodger. Within several months he learned his behaving very well, but in spite of this he did not betrayed him.
In a day, they found a way to forget this situation and Stive flatted that car. Chris had an intent desire to have a talk with Rodger. They met at the garage and Chris asked: “I saw you there, after my washing the painting -mechanism I had been called to assist with loading and you were entering into the garage at that moment and spoiled “OPEL” you’d better to go and to confess in it. For our salaries will be short.” Having heard this, Rodger took a steel stick and was going to fight Chris on a head, but suddenly he stopped and responded: “Look here, I don’t care at all for you here. Before yesterday, your silence was great, I liked it, but I did it because of you. For Steve’s attention for you is in a high price for me, clear! I’m not going to trail it. And now, go and efface the next car.” Chris went slowly to the microbus to rub it clear. Suddenly he heard shooting from the gun felt not well himself. Chris fell down without any consciousness. It was a gas-shooting. Rodger and Steve made a decision to shoot at the birds, but one of them aimed right into Chris’s back. Through the thick jacket, gas did not reach to the body, but poisoned him well. Having scared by this, they both rushed to Chris to save him. Steve made an order to bring some cold water to wipe his face and to drink it. Four minutes were for the rescue of Chris’s life and they were going on to do this. Chris woke up and saw the light. Ron carried to Chris an apple just to eat it. Chris got up with two men’s assistance and started to eat his apple. Steve said: “Sorry, it was my fault, I will pay for you, only keep still please.” Chris gazed at them in silence, changed his uniform and went slowly along the path to his place…
…to have some bite and to have some rest. Of course he told everything to his mother and she was in her horror shock: “Chris, you have to leave this working place. Study English, and go to Collage.” she was advising and scaring to let Chris not to work there more. So she gave a call to her sister and told her about everything. The Helen’s sister also was in horror and suggested to Chris to leave this bad boss and to register at the employment agency, where she worked. Her name was Elisa and she said that she would prepare all necessary papers and will apply Chris to study at Collage. “Tomorrow just let him go to write an application for leaving this work and in a month I shall send him to study the Computers’ Technology. It is modern now, and everyone must know all these programs. I think it would be very interesting for him. And now, calm down and try to sleep.”
Next day, Chris came to his working place, but Steve was nerving so much and expected for him. Steve came at first with an empty bullet in his hand. He said: “This bullet, it is your. You may keep it for yourselves. How is your health?” Chris answered: “I’ll write an application for out of your work. I cannot work in such way more. My health is well, but from here I won’t be with you.” They went into Steve’s study and Chris made his writing there. With the forced smile, Steve called to Dora and asked her to count Chris’s salary at once. Dora said that Chris would go anywhere. For this incident was not really good. So having finished with all documents Chris took his robe and said “Good bye” to everyone. Then he turned round and went to the employment agency. His new future days were expecting for him.
to be continue...
