Born identity: The simple question that offends many


People of color explain how they feel when they are asked: "Where are you really from?" Some find it irritating, annoying and offensive, while others think it is an opportunity to educate people.

As an African-American, I've been asked that question countless times. But my ancestors were brought here through slavery, so it's awkward when I really don't have the answer they're looking for! I'm a proud American, and it's the only heritage I know.
