Biodiversity of lactic acid bacteria of RussiaUSSR

"Biodiversity of lactic acid bacteria of Russia/USSR and fluctuations of manifestation degree of they identification characteristics". By Sergei Rosen.

Abstracts of 8th International congress of bacteriology and applied microbiology division, Jerusalem, Israel, August 18-23, 1966, p. 45.

For clearing up the raiset questions the unique collection  of publications has been created. It consists of 3500 papers and 120 books (37.000 pages in 34 volumes and 18 boxes of microfilms). For  each paper was marked the source of isolation, name of species, number of strains as well as the morphological, cultural, biochemical and serological properties. As the generalization of the material coincided with beginning of the International Nomenclature Reform in Bacteriology, the 8th edition of Bergey's Manual  was taken as a basis. For the century's work on the territory of the former USSR, the country's bacteriological laboratories  occured to identify about 50,000 strains lactic acid bacteria.  Follived species Streptococcus lactis, Str. cremoris, Str. bovis, Str. equinus, Str. mitis, Str. salivarius, Str. faecalis, Str. faecium, Str. durans,Str. equi, Str. dysgalactiae, Str. pyogenes, Str. agalactiae, Str.anginosus, Str. sanguis, Str. uberis, Str. pneumoniae, Pediococcus damnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, L. casei, L. helveticus, L. lactis, L. acidophilus L. salivarius, L. leichmannii, L. delbrueckii, L. fermentum, L. brevis, L. buchneri, L. cellobiosus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides,L.oenus were found out. The amount of identified strains of each  species were noted; all the identification signs were enumerated,  and the positive strains percentage by each sign was calculated. It varied within the limits of 90-100% in 35,5 of taken into account tests, within the limits of  10-90% in 25,1 tests and 0-10% in 39,4 tests. It gave the possibility to speak about the reliability of any test as identification one. The data given in this report were published as a supplement to the  Russion translation of the Proposed revision of the International code of   nomenclature of bacteria (Yerevan, 1974, p. 157-198),but these data occured not to be noticed. Having been probably noticed these data could stimulate the similar work at the other groups of bacteria and in other regions.
