After returning from the USA to Riga in 1989, Val Belin began a period of serious study of jazz. After a while, one of the best saxophonists in Latvia - the soloist of Riga Radio Yuri Smirnoff invited Val to his quintet, consisting of leading jazz musicians of the republic. Noteworthy participation of jazz pianist Hary Bash, who was expected to pursue the career of the future second Raymond Pauls. The drums involved Alex Akimovs, who was considered the Latvian Buddy Rich. Double-bassist Viktor Zelenkovs was considered the leading session musician. Having played a year in this line-up a group was professionally recorded on the Riga Radio 4-pieces EP, representing the popular world known jazz standards performed by SMIRNOFF FIVE
