Smile!

I didn’t know this guy from Adam. He stood at the other end of the platform waving his hand at me, smiling like a cat. Was he waving at me? Yes. He was a Chinese wearing a policeman’s uniform. Deep in thought, I hadn’t noticed him straight away, so he kept waving to catch my eye.
I came up to him and asked what the matter was.
- Why are you so gloomy? – he asked with a pleasant Texan accent. – The weather is so nice today. Is anything the matter with you? I hope you are not sick? Anything I can help you with? Why aren’t you smiling?
- Is there a law that everyone must be smiling in good weather? – I asked him in my turn.
- No, of course not. That is not mandatory at all. It is up to you. But look, people go to work in the morning and they should be in good spirits. That’s important.

I smiled at him and shook his firm hand. It made sense to me. I looked around. People were hurrying to work. Most of them smiled. I smiled back. I felt a lot better and I wished I were a Calgary policeman who had no other problems but to encourage people to smile.
