;vara;;tmik; means "covering," and prak;ep;tmik; means "pulling down."
SB 3.30.4, Translation and Purport:

The living entity, in whatever species of life he appears, finds a particular type of satisfaction in that species, and he is never averse to being situated in such a condition.

The satisfaction of the living entity in a particular type of body, even if it is most abominable, is called illusion. A man in a higher position may feel dissatisfaction with the standard of life of a lower-grade man, but the lower-grade man is satisfied in that position because of the spell of m;y;, the external energy. M;y; has two phases of activities. One is called prak;ep;tmik;, and the other is called ;vara;;tmik;. ;vara;;tmik; means "covering," and prak;ep;tmik; means "pulling down." In any condition of life, the materialistic person or animal will be satisfied because his knowledge is covered by the influence of m;y;. In the lower grade or lower species of life, the development of consciousness is so poor that one cannot understand whether he is happy or distressed. This is called ;vara;;tmik;. Even a hog, who lives by eating stool, finds himself happy, although a person in a higher mode of life sees that the hog is eating stool. How abominable that life is!

Any abominable condition we may live, but m;y; will cover our intelligence and we will think that we are living very nice. This is called ;vara;;tmika-;akti.
Lecture on SB 6.1.19 -- Los Angeles, January 15, 1970:

M;y; has got two things: ;vara;;tmika and prak;ep;tmika. ;vara;;tmika means just like a dog or a hog, he is in a, encaged in a body, eating stool, living in a very filthy place, but still, the hog is feeling himself that he is happy, he's happy. This is called ;vara;;tmika-;akti. Any abominable condition we may live, but m;y; will cover our intelligence and we will think that we are living very nice. This is called ;vara;;tmika-;akti. Otherwise he cannot live. If an animal or a dog or hog thinks that he's in most abominable condition of life, then he cannot live. But he enjoys. A dog is chained up by the master, but he thinks that he's very happy. He does not think that "I am completely dependent and I am chained up. I have no independence, I cannot freely move." Even his chain is taken away, he wants to be chained. This is m;y;. In any condition of life, everyone thinks that he's happy. But actually he does not know what is happiness. This is called m;y;.

;vara;;tmik; means we are already covered by the illusion. Although we are suffering in every step, we are thinking that we are happy.

This m;y; has got two kinds of influence: prak;ep;tmik;, ;vara;;tmik;. ;vara;;tmik; means we are already covered by the illusion. Although we are suffering in every step, we are thinking that we are happy. Just, just the day before yesterday the lady, she said, "Oh, the temperature was so high that I could not tolerate it. I could not..." The next moment she said, "Oh, I don't feeling any, any unhappiness." This is called prak;ep;tmik;. First things is that I am so much illusioned that I... Just like the animals. They are suffering so much, but they have no knowledge that they are suffering. But human beings, who are above them, they can understand that what sort of suffering there is. A animal, he's, he's being taken to the slaughterhouse, but it does not know due to ignorance. This is called ;vara;;tmik;, covering influence of the material nature. And there is another influence. Suppose one is trying to come out of the covering. Prak;ep;tmik;. It throws: "Oh, why you are trying for this? You are very happy. Why do you think, why you are so much pessimistic of this life? Just work hard and enjoy life. That's all."
