Mind Transformation 157
Thinking is just another word for meditation. Let’s suppose meditation is something you do when you are trying not to think. You are sitting and repeating on and on, “don’t think, don’t think, follow the breath, up, down, up, down—” But your brain, instead of following the breath, starts increasingly producing more and more thoughts. Why does it happen? Well, who knows? Look then, if you want to develop a new idea and force yourself to think about something special—your thoughts usually disappear and your brain becomes empty. Of course, wise men who discovered meditation knew about this contradictive nature of the brain, and nowadays we can understand this reverse psychology quite easily, though many spiritual celebrities still believe that thinking is something bad, the thing which has to be avoided as much as possible.
One of the best ways of practicing meditation is writing. You sit somewhere, set a timer, and tell yourself not to think. Then you take a pen and paper and write down everything that comes up. If it’s an image, you describe it with maximum details; if there are words, you write them down in the same sequence as they come; if there are sounds—make up a poem. Again, everything you need is just five minutes to start with.
