Mind Transformation 177
Today I spent more than an hour being involved in a conversation on italky. I’ve published a post where I talked about learning a target language through thinking and pointed out that before to learn to speak one should learn to think. Someone wrote a comment where he said that thinking is unnecessary. He claimed that he can talk, write, and read free in a foreign language simultaneously thinking in Russian. More certain, he said he can use well a foreign language without thinking in it. At first, I asked him, what does he mean by “use well”, and he answered “to speak, to write, to read free.” Then I asked him about thinking, and he wrote a long vague definition in replay. Having combined all his arguments, I wrote a bilingual answer which turned out to be unassailable for his logic. All he could answer than was “No,” but then he added “probably I’m wrong.”
