I was so delighted to get your two sweet letters № 16-17, for both so many fond & tender kisses & thanks. I don’t know why I am so behind you in the number of my letters, I wrote every day & so did you, where can that difference come from? Do you know sweet one those russian phrases were beautifully written; they make my heart leap from joy because my darling is making daily progress!!//

Give Schneiderlein my kind messages & tell her that she does her duty admirably, not talking any language to you than russian! I think it too bad, you poor thing being interrupted the whole time; it is quite the case with me & I don’t know anything more aggravating; I swear awfully when that happens & sent the people to the devil! Oh! beg your pardon, but you see the habit makes those words slip off so easily. I have got a detestable pen, but am too lazy to change.

I am glad that fool of Uhlenhuth has sent you our photos, but also two of each, so I need// not send the half of mine, but keep them, for giving away those that I have got already! The Caesar groups are very good – I think.

Fancy, today my man found, while cleaning my white uniform, the sweet little picture of the Madonna you gave me in your room on Easter night, & where? in the pocket! It remained there since I put it in, before going to Church. What luck! I did not mention to you I had lost it; because I was so sad myself – and now I have directly hind it up close to my bed. Thank you once more my own little girly-dear for that picture!//

We came back from town at 4. First, we went to the fortress, where there was the usual Sunday service & a few prayers for aunt Katty. We lunched after that in the Winter palace just in the rooms where my little darling lived for Ella’s wedding – (where Sandro saw you, hum!) and then drove to the poor Heyden’s; the old Governor-General of Finland lost his wife yesterday & we know the whole family & like them very much – so again we had to present at a service for the dead. Really, it is too bad – we do nothing but that since I came fr[om] Coburg: run up to town, quickly bury & person// and rush back to Гатчина! Though the singing is most beautiful so sad & imposing, yet, I must say I don’t feel at all inclined of spending several hours a week near coffins! It does not agree in the least with my feelings at the present moment! Do you understand that – you old курица!

Papa is always so dear & kind to me – today I asked whether he would allow me to go over to England in his lovely yacht the “Polar Star” – and he at once consented, adding he was sure I am delighted not to have to go through Berlin! I should think I am mad at idea of going over to see my sweety by sea & on board that// ship. Oh! you ought to see her – she is beauty & so comfortable, but the best is her engines – she steams 18 knots easily an hour!

Schan-mir-in’s-Gesicht – what a nice little valse, except the rather vulgar turning of the heads. But the “noh a mal” is the best of all tunes; oh! my goodness, how I wish to hear it again being sung by you, my own darling, my one & all, my sweet little girly dear, my lovely little bride – Alix! That name is everything to me & it sounds sweeter, than the prettiest music, to mine ear!

Tomorrow Мама leaves for Абастуманъ in the evening, she shall// be aursy over a month and I am afraid it’ll seem very dull for Papa, as really Micha & Olga only remain with him. I shall have to be constantly in the camp, especially in the beginning as my battalion goes there before the regiment settles there completely. I intend coming here riding, as I used to do that in former years in two hours & I prefer going on horseback to driving in a carriage. Of course there may be exceptions – let me say – Rosenau was one & what a one? I shall say good-bye to Мама for two months as I intend leaving for England before she comes back with Georgie. The// first couple is delighted to have a change of air; they both send you their fond love. Xenia hopes you’ll write to her once to that place. Please not to forget to give me your new address, because I might spoil your baronetey and incognito like a trifle if I sent a letter off with that thundering address H.G.D.H. etc. Ha! ha! that would have been a “sp;tterlich” behaviour! Now my little Alixy-dear I must stop this jocer-like chattering. God bless you [cross drawn] my beloved own sweet darling & thank you once more for your sweet kind letters.

ST. PETERSBURG, MAY 16.
The State funeral of the late Imperial Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna took place this morning. The Tsar and all the other members of the Imperial family accompanied the remains, as is the custom, in grand processional order from the Palace of her late Imperial Highness to the last resting-place of the Romanoffs in the Cathedral of the fortress on the Neva. The long procession consisted of some 40 sections and groups, including a large number of troops, infantry, cavalry, and artillery. The entire route along one side of the Champ de Mars, past the British Embassy, and across the bridge to the fortress was sanded and strewn with branches of cypress. The pageant opened by a squadron of cuirassiers, and mournful music was played by various military bands in the procession and among the troops lining the route. His Imperial Majesty the Tsar walked alone behind the funeral car, which was sur¬mounted by a splendid white canopy trimmed with gold and silver lace. Immediately after the Emperor walked 24 Imperial Grand Dukes and Princes, including’Prihce* Albert of Saxe- Altenburg. The Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz reached St. Petersburg only just in time to drive across the town and arrive at the fortress when the burial service had already begun. The Empress and Grand Duchesses followed in deep mourning coaches, each drawn by six horses. The peculiar feature which distinguished this from previous Imperial funerals was the presence in the cortege of a very large number of charity school children and civilian deputations from schools, hospitals, asylums, patriotic societies, and musical associations, of which the late Grand Duchess was a generous patroness. The burial service took place at ouce on arrival in the fortress church, in the presence of the entire Court and the members of the Diplo¬matic Body. The Tsar has issued a manifesto calling upon his faithful subjects to join in prayers for the repose of the soul of the late Grand Duchess, who devoted her life to works of education and benevolence.
The remains of the Grand Duchess lay in State before the funeral, covered with a pall of cloth of gold, in the private chapel of the Palace, and guarded by four superior officers and two subalterns of the Palace Grenadiers. The Emperor and Empress, with other Imperial personages, twice attended prayers on Monday morning and evening for her late Imperial Highness. The Court goes into mourning for three months, from April 80, according to Russian reckoning, so that it will not, in all probability, interfere with the approaching marriage of the Tsar’s daughter, which wifi most likely be fixed for or about July 23 or August 4, according to English reckoning.— Our Own Correspondent.//

I need not describe the ruin and desolation hich I witnessed at Martino and elsewhere. It is enough to say that a calamity has occurred exceeding in magnitude any of the similar visitations which have afflicted Greece during the present century. The districts of Phocis and Locris have not suffered alone ; in northern Euboea some 18 or 20 villages lie in ruins, and the provinces of Lebadea, Lamia, and Larissa have shared in the disaster. Large sums will be needed for the relief of thousands of homeless peasants. Last year the Emperor Francis Joseph set a splendid example of munificence, which others in high places were not slow to follow. British liberality has never been behindhand on such an occasion as the present. It would be sad if any spirit of cynicism, [any tendency to moralize over the shortcomings of Greece as a nation, should dry the springs of charity or quench the sympathy of Englishmen with tne victims of undeserved misfortune. u Sunt lacrimae reram, et mentem mortalia tangunt/’
It is important that the charitable should know that the relief funds will in all pro¬bability be judiciously and equitably distri¬buted, and that there is no prospect of a repeti¬tion of the scandals which occurred in Zante last year. The Government has taken a wise step in the appointment of a military commis¬sion, which is charged with the reconstruction of the ruined villages as well as with the local distribution of relief. The commission will work under the direction of Colonel Metaxas, an officer of energy and high character. The administration of the funds will thus be with¬drawn from the politicians, who on this occasion at least will be unable to…

Я был так счастлив получить два твои милые письма № 16-17, бесконечно тебя за них целую и благодарю. Не понимаю, почему настолько отстаю от тебя по номерам: я писал каждый день, и ты тоже; откуда же могла появиться эта разница? Знаешь, любимая, эти русские фразы были написаны тобой прекрасно, они заставили мое сердце подпрыгнуть от радости, потому что моя возлюбленная делает ежедневные успехи!!//

Передай Шнайдерляйн мои самые теплые приветствия и скажи, что она, разговаривая с тобой только по-русски, прекрасно исполняет свой долг! Плохо, что тебя, бедняжку, беспокоят каждую минуту, со мной происходит то же самое, и ничего более ужасного я не знаю. Ругаюсь страшно, когда такое происходит, и посылаю таких людей к дьяволу!
О! Прошу прощения, но, видишь ли, иногда некоторые слова сами слетают по привычке. У меня ужасное перо, но я слишком ленив, чтобы сменить его.

Рад, что этот глупец Уленхут послал тебе фотографии – каждой по две, так что мне не// придется посылать половину своих, и я смогу раздавать те, которые у меня уже есть!
Думаю, групповые снимки с Цезарем очень хороши.

Забавно, сегодня мой слуга, когда чистил мою белую униформу, нашел тот маленький образок Богородицы, что ты мне дала в твоей комнате в ночь на Пасху. И где? В кармане! Он там оставался с тех пор, как я положил его туда перед тем, как пойти в церковь. Какая удача! Я и не говорил тебе, что потерял его, потому что мне самому было очень грустно – а теперь я повесил его прямо у своей кровати. Спасибо тебе еще раз, моя родная девочка, за этот образ!//

Мы вернулись из города в 4. Сначала отправились в крепость, где помолились за тетю Катти на обычной воскресной службе. Обедали в Зимнем дворце, как раз в тех комнатах, где останавливалась, приехав на свадьбу Эллы, моя любимая, (где тебя увидел Сандро!), затем поехали к бедному Гейдену, старый генерал-губернатор Финляндии вчера потерял жену, а мы знаем всю семью и любим их, так что снова пришлось присутствовать на заупокойной службе. Это очень плохо, на самом деле, ибо после нашего возвращения из Кобурга мы занимаемся только этим: мчимся в город, быстро кого-нибудь хороним,// и снова спешим назад в Гатчину! Хоть пение и красиво, величественно и печально, однако, признаюсь, я не испытываю желания несколько часов в неделю проводить рядом с гробами. Это совсем не сочетается с моим настроением сейчас! Ты понимаешь это, старая курица!

 Папa всегда мягок и добр со мной – сегодня я спросил, позволит ли мне он отправиться в Англию на своей любимой яхте «Полярная Звезда» – он немедленно согласился, добавив, что он уверен, что я рад возможности не ехать через Берлин! Меня сводит с ума мысль о том, что поплыву к любимой морем, и на борту такого// корабля. О! Ты должна увидеть ее: это просто прелесть! И такая удобная! Но самое лучшее в ней – это ее двигатели: она легко проходит около 18 узлов в час!

Schan – mir – in’s – Gesicht [Смотри мне в глаза (нем.).] – чудесный миленький вальс, не считая того вульгарного движения головой. Но «Noh a mal» – моя любимая мелодия, как я хочу снова услышать, как ты ее поешь, моя родная, моя любимая и несравненная, моя невестушка Аликс! Это имя значит все для меня, для моих ушей оно звучит слаще, чем любая музыка!

Завтра вечером  Мамa отправляется в Абас-Туман, ее// не будет больше месяца, боюсь, что  Папa будет отчаянно тосковать, так как с ним остаются только Миша и Ольга. Мне придется все время проводить в лагере, особенно в начале, так как туда отправляется мой батальон перед окончательным передвижением полка. Я намереваюсь прибыть туда верхом, раньше, бывало, я добирался за пару часов. Езде в коляске предпочитаю езду верхом на лошади. Конечно, исключения возможны. Одним из них был Розенау, и каким? Я прощаюсь с  Мамa на два месяца, потому что отбуду в Англию до того, как она приедет с Георгием.// Первая пара счастлива перемене обстановки, они посылают тебе свои нежные приветы. Ксения надеется, что ты ей хоть раз туда напишешь. Пожалуйста, не забудь дать мне твой новый адрес, ибо я могу испортить твой титул баронессы и легко нарушить твое инкогнито, если отошлю письмо с громогласными инициалами: H.G.D.H. [Имеется в виду сокращенное написание титула принцессы Гессенской: Her Grand Duchess Highness – Ее Велико-Герцогское Высочество.] и т.д. Ха! Ха! Это был бы «дерзкий» [нем.] поступок! Теперь, моя дорогая Аликси, я должен прекратить болтать, словно попугай. Благослови тебя Бог [нарисован крест], моя дорогая нежная девочка, спасибо тебе еще раз за твои милые письма.

«Россия, Санкт-Петербург. Этим утром прошли официальные похороны Великой княгини Екатерины Михайловны. Государь и остальные члены Императорской Семьи, как и требовал того обычай, с большой процессией сопровождали останки от Дворца до места последнего упокоения всех Романовых в храме крепости на Неве. Величественная процессия состояла из сорока групп и отделений, в том числе из большого количества военных – представителей пехоты, артиллерии и кавалерии. Весь путь по одной стороне Марсового Поля, минуя посольство Великобритании, потом через мост – в крепость, был усыпан песком и ветками кипариса. Шествие открывал эскадрон кирасиров, звучала траурная музыка, исполняемая военными оркестрами. Его Императорское Величество Государь в одиночестве шел за катафалком, над которым возвышался изумительно красивый белый балдахин, расшитый золотыми и серебряными нитями. Вслед за Императором шли 24 Великих князя и княгини, включая князя Альберта Саксен-Альтенбургского. Наследный великий герцог Мекленбург-Стрелицкий как раз приехал в Санкт-Петербург во время, чтобы проехать по городу и прибыть в крепость, когда уже началась заупокойная служба. Императрица и великие княгини шествовали в траурных экипажах, каждый из которых был запряжен шестью лошадьми. Отличительной чертой этой Императорской похоронной процессии было присутствие большого количества учащихся благотворительных заведений, делегаций от школ, больниц, приютов, патриотических и музыкальных обществ, которым покойная Великая княгиня щедро покровительствовала. Заупокойная служба началась немедленно по прибытии процессии в крепостной храм в присутствии всего Двора и дипломатических представителей. Государь издал указ, призывающий подданных помолиться за упокой души великой княгини, которая посвятила свою жизнь трудам на ниве образования и благотворительности.

Перед похоронами гроб с останками Великой княгини, задрапированный роскошным покрывалом с золотыми нитями, находился в домашней дворцовой церкви. При нем был выставлен караул из четырех младших и двух старших офицеров из дворцовых гренадеров.

Императорская чета с другими членами Семьи дважды посетили заупокойные службы утром и вечером в понедельник. Согласно русским обычаям, Двор будет находиться в трауре в течение трех месяцев, с 30-го апреля, так что, с наибольшей вероятностью, это не будет касаться грядущей свадьбы дочери Царя, которая будет назначена на 23-е июля или 4 августа».
