Fluency versus Accuracy

According to ESA methodology, there are three stages of the lesson, which are known as: Engage, Study and Activate.

The first stage (Engage), is where the teacher involves students in the lesson.

The second stage (Study), is where students focus their attention on the language itself. They learn new information, improve their skills and/or build on their previous knowledge.

The third stage (Activate), is where students try to use the language as freely as they can.

Normally when we talk about ESA lessons, activities that help to improve fluency are part of the ‘activate’ stage, whereas activities that help our accuracy are part of the ‘study’ stage.

So correcting students’ mistakes is obviously ideal at this stage.

Whether we are focusing on fluency or/and accuracy, both of them are important parts of any speaking activity.

That’s why we should think not only about accuracy, but also about fluency at each of the different stages.
