Mind Transformation 352
F. Scott Fitzgerald “The Great Gatsby”
Yesterday, I forgot to mention that I was at the library and took new books. One of them was Fitzgerald’s well-known novel, which I started reading at the morning and went through almost half of the book quite easily. The language of classic literature is rather different than the language of classic scientific books, though I can better understand the latter than the former. Anyway, I have to read both to find out why something is called classic and what makes language powerful, amazing, attractive, and so on.
According to the introduction made by some educated guy, the novel is about changes happened in urban life after World War I in America and how these changes affected social life, personal life, etc. New technologies like telephone, electricity, cars were brought to masses and totally transformed the way of how people interact with each other—
But why am I talking about the review of the book?
Well, I haven’t finished reading the book yet, and all I can say about it is just my first impression, which is not quite rich. Conversations between main characters about some gossip or their place in the world are not fascinating at all. At least at the first part of the book there are only superficial talks with no touching any serious question of that time. Even Daisy’s expression that for a girl there is no other better thing than to be a little beautiful fool is a weak banal complaining.
I stopped at the chapter where Nick meats Gatsby. I hope later on they will show what was actually going on in minds of American citizens in 1920s.
At the evening I had a headache again. Two more days and I’ll go to a doctor.
