Mind Transformation 392

At yesterday’s speaking exercise, which was lasting more than an hour, I recounted the entire plot of “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” It was so easy and I almost missed nothing. My self-talks are getting more structured, and mostly I’m making them at ease. Recently, I was thinking a lot about ‘positive thinking,’ and here is what I came up with. Positive thinking has nothing to do with the content; it’s all about the form. When one’s language is sufficiently developed to be precise, entertaining, and magnificent, that’s where positive thinking shows up. You no longer elaborate your thoughts; you just allow them to come and play in your mind as they wish. If there is something negative though, it’s not a reason to become upset and anxious. You can see things as they are, and it gives you an opportunity to find an appropriate solution to any problem by gathering relevant information and interpreting the information with brutal honesty. You can also encourage yourself even if your situation is unendurably bad. Perhaps it was Nietzsche’s case—the most brilliant ‘positive thinking’ I’ve ever seen. When things were getting worse, his writing became better and better supporting him till he fell in love with Dionysius and lost his mind. This is a kind of example of thinking which never gives up its superiority, never surrenders to the ‘reality,’ protecting the organism from committing a spiritual suicide till there is no way to move forward.
