Введение
Цель методической разработки: расширение профессиональных знаний курсантов по темам: «Судно», «Типы судов», «Характеристика судна», «Экипаж», «Обязанности», «Мое первое морское путешествие», «Плавпрактика»; совершенствование навыков чтения, письма и говорения в профессиональных целях.
Данная методическая разработка представляет собой сборник заданий и текстов по английскому языку для курсантов 1 курса судоводительской и судомеханической специальностей по темам: «Типы судов», (“Types of ships”), «Характеристика судна» (“Particulars (specifications) of the ship”), «Экипаж» (“The crew”), «Мое первое морское путешествие» (“My first sea voyage”) и «Плавпрактика» (“Shipboard training”). Упражнения направлены на совершенствование навыков устной (монологической и диалогической) и письменной речи. Это – пересказ текста в разных временных формах, ответы на вопросы, ролевые игры.
Также есть упражнения, направленные на совершенствование навыков произношения, чтения, перевода; на изучение и запоминание новой лексики, устные грамматические упражнения.
Темы «Мое первое морское путешествие» и «Плавпрактика» позволяют развить аналитические способности через возможность проанализировать карьерный рост от стажера до капитана судна; а также отработать коммуникативные навыки (обмен впечатлениями от рейса).
В методической разработке представлена расширенная лексика по теме «Типы судов» с иллюстрациями, описаны обязанности, как на палубе, так и в машинном отделении для членов экипажа разных должностей.
Каждый текст сопровождается списком необходимым списком слов и выражений, сносками новой лексики, которую курсанты могут не знать на момент начала изучения темы, вопросы к текстам, устные задания (пересказ текста), диалоги или ролевые игры – то есть упражнения на монологическую и диалогическую речь.
Методическая разработка посвящена основным темам, которые должен знать каждый моряк независимо от специальности.
Тексты и задания могут быть использованы как для работы на занятиях, так и для самостоятельной работы.

Topic 3. THE CREW (THE DUTIES)

A modern cargo ship has two departments on her board: the deck department and the engine department. The deck department  includes navigators , radio-operators , sailors  and a doctor. We call navigators according to their rank on board ship: master (captain), chief officer (chief mate), second officer (second mate), third officer (third mate), junior officer (fourth mate) and the fifth officer (fifth mate).
The duties of the officers are as follows:
The master  is responsible for the safety of the crew, ship, cargoes and passengers (if any). The chief officer  is the head of the deck department. The second officer  is responsible for loading and unloading cargoes at the port of departure and destination. The third officer  chooses the charts for the coming voyage and makes necessary corrections on the charts according to the latest navigational information (warnings). The fourth officer  keeps an account of technical documents. The fifth officer or the administrative assistant  of the captain provides the ship with provision and supply.
All the navigators but the fifth mate keep watch on the navigating bridge where they keep a sharp look-out as there may be some other ships crossing the course at any moment. The officer on watch takes bearings of light-houses, light-vessels and other coastal or sea objects. He does it as often as possible to check the ship’s position.
Radio officers keep watch in the radio-room and are responsible for radio-communications. There are often 1 or 2 Radio officers on board ship, but on ships with continuous radio watches there may be even 3 radio officers.
A Boatswain  and sailors must keep the ship’s hull, holds and tackle in good condition.

THE ENGINE DEPARTMENT  CONSISTS OF:
- The Chief Engineer
- The Second, Third, Fourth Engineers
- Motormen
- 2 or 3 electricians

 
DUTIES OF CHIEF ENGINEER
Chief engineer over sees daily routine operations of engine room and communicate to the office between department on ship and within his department.
Planning of manpower, job delegation
Daily job discussion with second engineer and daily routine ship inspection.
Supervise engine room personnel and give advice as required.
Improve performance and efficiency of engine room work team.
To work according to the planned maintenance schedule.
Draw up training orientation program for engine room cadets.
To ensure smooth communication between inter-department.
Arranging preparing and recording of machinery survey.
Ensure proper operation of safety equipments and its certificate still valid.
Testing of machinery space lifting gear.
Planning maintenance check list to ensure machinery are properly maintained and reduced the risk of sudden break down of plant operation.
Chick list should record machinery description, date of service, part changed and remarks etc.
Ensure proper entry of engine room log book and oil record book.
Arrangement for plant survey inspection to check with item is due for survey.
To ensure sufficient stock are reserved ( bunker ,fuel oil ,diesel oil ,main engine lube oil ,cylinder oil , other lube oils and chemicals ) in case of any unpredictable situations ( e.g. heavy sea ,storm ,engine breakdown at sea ,delay of voyage ,unavailable of port bunker service etc. )
Writing of report to company e.g. voyage report, monthly main engine performance report and ad hoe report.
Preparation of dry dock list.
Inventory management and requisition (chemicals, lube oil, machinery spaces and stores).
In Port
Liaise with shore technical representative.
Receive stores and spares from supplier.
Receive bunker, fuel oil, lube oil etc.
Ensure engine room is locked after work.
All firefighting equipment is in their position and tested.
Bilge overboard valve is locked shut.
Sewage plant should be in operation.
Should take permission from port authority for major work done on main propulsion.
Cargo Work
Ensure deck cranes and deck machinery is tested prior port arrival .
Ballast system properly function and correct operation by the deckofficerson duty.
Make sure sufficient number of engineers in board during cargo work in case any emergency repair is required.
At Sea
During heavy seas,to ensure all items in the engine room is properly secured .
Daily routine ship inspection
Main engine and other auxiliary engines are in order.
Training of engine room staff, usage of firefighting equipment and fire drill.
In Dry Dock
To brief engine room staffs before docking and ensure they understand their respective duties.
Preparation of machinery survey in dry dock
Preparation of dry dock list.
Study previous dry dock reports and note clearance to be measured .
Ensure all tools and spares are ready for use.
Liaise with the shipyard manager and contractor to ensure correct works carried out.
Emergency lightening and generator set to be tested before docking in case of shore power failure.
Fire fighting equipments on board to be checked and tested and make ready for use.
All tanks, wells and coffer dams to be sound and recorded.
Minimum bunker and ballast to be carried.
To ensure filter elements in oily water separator and renewed and system is checked and system is checked for satisfactory function.

Topic  4. MY FIRST SEA VOYAGE

Task 1. Read, translate and retell the text. Use a dictionary, if necessary:

MY FIRST SEA VOYAGE
The name of the ship on which I made my first sea voyage is “Zarya”. The “Zarya” is a modern and comfortable vessel . Her speed is 15 knots . Her draught is 27 feet. She is one of the best ships that sail in the Baltic Sea.
The “Zarya” is equipped  with up-to-date machinery . She is a cargo-passenger vessel: she accommodates  about a hundred passengers and carries 2,000 tons of cargo.
It was my first voyage, that’s why I was rather nervous . I was afraid of being sea-sick . However, everything was all right. I felt perfectly well at sea even when we got into a storm , and our ship was pitching and rolling . Some of my friends felt bad during the storm, they were sea-sick, and I felt quite all right.
Our ship was bound  for London. We put to sea  on the 29th of June. The weather was rather favourable  and the sea was calm . On our way  to London, we passed  several islands . We met some foreign and Russian ships. Our vessel called at several ports. We called at the port  of Stockholm and stayed  there for three days. In the port, we went ashore . It was rather interesting to walk  there.
From Stockholm we went to London. We arrived  in London on the 9th of July at 6 a.m. There were many ships in the port when we came there. We spent about a week in London. The capital of the UK produced  a great impression  on me.
We left St. Petersburg on the 16th of July and arrived here on the 21st. Therefore , our passage  took us  five days. Our voyage was over . We were at sea more than three weeks.
I was greatly pleased  with my first voyage and was very sorry to leave  the ship and to part  with the crew. As you know, the dream of my life is to become a seaman. Now it is coming true . I’m looking forward  to my next sailing practice.

Topic 5. SHIPBOARD TRAINING

SHIPBOARD TRAINING
The cadets of maritime colleges usually have their practical studies either  on board training vessels  or merchant ships . Now summer is coming and the cadets are going to have their shipboard training . The cadets of the Navigation Department  will keep watch at the wheel, paint the hull , deck superstructures , masts , wash and scrub decks. The will launch  and hoist  life-boats , learn how to use life-saving appliances . They are going to work in the wheel-house as helmsmen. Skilled  officers will instruct our boys how to handle a sextant  and other navigational instruments. The apprentices  will learn how to take bearing of some light-vessels, lighthouses, different coastal objects and define  the ship’s position on charts. They must also know how to use echo-sounders , logs , finders and satellite navigation systems.
During their shipboard training the cadets of the Radio Engineering Department  will work in the radio-room transmitting and receiving  radio telegrams, weather reports and navigational warnings. They will learn how to tune and repair the ship’s radio equipment in case of trouble.
The cadets of the Engineering Department  will work in the engine-room . They will learn how to maintain  the main engine, auxiliary machinery , how to lubricate  and repair  the engine equipment .
The cadet of the Port Operation Department will work in ports and on board ships during their training. When in ports they will learn how to load, unload and stow  cargo. All the cadets must work hard to master  their profession.
