Roly-poly. Колобок
– Bake a roly-poly for me, woman.
– With what now? There’s no meal.
– Eh, old wife, sweep the granary clean, scrape the barrels – that’ll be it.
Thus the old woman did: she swept and scraped two handfuls of meal, mixed it with sour cream, kneaded the dough into a roly-poly, frizzled it in oil, and finally put it on the sill to cool down.
Now, Roly-poly grew tired of lying around, and so he rolled down onto the terrace, then onto the grass and to the walkway, and along it he rolled on.
As Roly-poly was rolling, he suddenly runs into a hare:
– Oh, you roly-poly, I’ll eat you!
– No, don’t you eat me, squinty, best listen to me sing my song.
Hare pricked up his ears as Roly-poly began to sing:
I’m a rolling roly-poly,
From the granary swept
(Where the barrels were kept),
Was in sour cream wrapped,
Into the oven leapt,
Onto the sill was slapped.
I’ve escaped from grandpa,
I’ve escaped from grandma,
So from this hare it’s as easy as pies to escape.
Then, Roly-poly rolled on swiftly, and that was the last Hare ever saw of him.
Now, Roly-poly was rolling along the forest trail, when suddenly he runs into a grey wolf:
– Oh, you roly-poly, I’ll eat you!
– No, don’t you eat me, best listen to me sing my song.
And Roly-poly began to sing:
I’m a rolling roly-poly,
From the granary swept
(Where the barrels were kept),
Was in sour cream wrapped,
Into the oven leapt,
Onto the sill was slapped.
I’ve escaped from grandpa,
I’ve escaped from grandma,
I’ve escaped from Hare,
So from this wolf it’s as easy as pies to escape.
Then, Roly-poly rolled on swiftly, and that was the last Wolf ever saw of him.
Suddenly, a bear is coming, bending the bushes down on his way.
– Oh, you roly-poly, I’ll eat you!
– Would you now? Still, you best listen to me sing my song first.
And Roly-poly sang:
I’m a rolling roly-poly,
From the granary swept
(Where the barrels were kept),
Was in sour cream wrapped,
Into the oven leapt,
Onto the sill was slapped.
I’ve escaped from grandpa,
I’ve escaped from grandma,
I’ve escaped from Hare,
I’ve escaped from Wolf,
So it’s nothing much for me to escape from this bear.
Then, Roly-poly rolled on swiftly, and that was the last Bear ever saw of him.
Now, Roly-poly was rolling, when suddenly he runs into a fox:
– Oh, hello there, Roly-poly! Why, how pretty browned you are!
Roly-poly felt bashful and started singing his song just as, little by little, the fox was sneaking up on him:
I’m a rolling roly-poly,
From the granary swept
(Where the barrels were kept),
Was in sour cream wrapped,
Into the oven leapt,
Onto the sill was slapped.
I’ve escaped from grandpa,
I’ve escaped from grandma,
I’ve escaped from Hare,
I’ve escaped from Wolf,
I’ve escaped from Bear,
So from this fox it’s as easy as pies to escape.
– Such a nice song! – said the fox. – It’s a shame though, my dear, that I’ve grown old and have a bad ear. Will you please sit down on my snout and once again give me a shout?
Roly-poly was pleased to be praised for the song, so he did as asked and just as he began with–
I’m a rolling roly-poly…
–the fox suddenly – om nom nom – ate him!
