Baraganchi in the Kumyk plain **
Baraganchi in one of its lexical transformations in the form of Braguna in the middle of the 18th century was the capital of the Kumyk Bragun Principality. And when there were no Princes, the city was ruled by the owner.
Apparently, the city got its name from the bragunts, a fairly strong and influential ethnic group on the Kumyk plain, which scientists refer to the terek kumyks of turkic origin.
The city identificeret usually Baraganch settlement near the modern village Barahanchi in the Khasavyurt district.
The city was quite large in area and is estimated by archaeologists at 100 hectares. It was located on an elevated platform. Apparently there was a fortress here, as indicated by the large number of stones scattered throughout the territory, but retaining the remnants of a row, as if they were thrown from the walls.
In posad people were engaged in the production of ceramics of the khazar period. There are also many remnants of red clay pottery from the Golden Horde period.
The city also had villages located on small hills. Their archaeological material is synchronized with the urban one.
The Kumyk plain, where the urban ensemble with the city of Baraganchi was located, provided good opportunities for trade development, since along the banks of the Terek and Sulak, which bordered the valley on both sides, there were trade routes connected with the Great Silk Road.
The city appeared in the era of the huns, flourished during the rule of the Khazar Khaganate, and did not lose its urban dignity under the Golden Horde. But he wilted after the Great Kingdoms have died. People who were engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, and handicrafts continued to live here. But their localities did not become cities.
