Mecthet on the Volga **
In fact, all the ancient cities that were placed in the lower reaches of the Atil river eventually acquired the status of ghosts. And not only because the riverbed in these places constantly changed its direction, but also because of some mysterious, magical fluidity of everything that tried to settle here.
The name of the city has its origin, most likely, the mausoleums, of which there are several pieces left, there was probably a mosque in the city, or several mosques, for which this city was famous. And since both rivers among which the city was located were marked by fish spawning, this is how, in aggregate, the name of the city was formed among the people.
And goldenhords themselves called their seat here, whether Beldjamen, or Sarai that is not known.
This city is located near the oldest Paleolithic settlement of Neanderthals, who chose these places 70 thousand years ago. Neanderthals settled in those days near the pebbles, which could be split and get a sharp surface of the stone to use it for cutting animals and root digging.
The goldenhords ulus Juchi settled here at the end of the 13th century, because the place was protected on three sides by the waters of the rivers: in front of the Volga, on the sides of the Upper and Lower Mecthet-rivers, and behind lay the beam.
The fortress, called Tatar by tradition, was located four hundred meters from the shore on cape Volzhsk. There you can still see the inconspicuous ruins of the fortress with traces of a stone wall and foundations of buildings.
Sedentary steppe dwellers built themselves mud houses, Neanderthals did not use riverine clay, so they left it until better times. Those horde members who went on campaigns on military or commercial business, on arrival, scattered yurts.
There was a large market place where horses, cattle and various goods were brought in the summer. There councils were held and decrees were issued. Various crafts, furnaces, and blacksmiths were also located here.
The city was in use a variety of coins, issued mainly in the 14th century. There were coins of Mengu-Timur, coins of Tokht, most of all there were coins of Uzbek Khan, and Janibek.
Located near several waterways, including near the source of the Akhtuba, the Mecthet was a trading post through which caravans went from Akhtuba along the Volga to the Volga-Don Perevoloka.
Then, in the 15th century, the town was deserted, political winds blew to other steppes, the horde went to the east. The fortress remained, along with several ruins of mausoleums attached to it, which travelers took for mosques. Perhaps there were really mosques.
