Chugaev on the Donets **
     Also Chugujv settlement, Chuga, Cheshlyuev.
There are several versions of the name of this city. According to one of them, this was the name of the legendary ruler of this steppe region, the polovtsian Khan Chugui, the leader of the turkic chugai family, who roamed in the 6th century as part of the Western Khaganate. In Chinese sources, this genus was called «chateau».
In the middle of the 7th century, with the weakening of the Western Khaganate, the Chugai family swore allegiance to the khazars, the grandsons and great-grandsons of Ashina.
At the end of the 11th century, the polovtsians settled here, naming their camp after their Khan Chashli. Among the chuguev keepers of local legends, there are stories about how Kievan Princes visited the city Chugu for brides for their children. Polovtsian princesses were distinguished by their thin stature and sharp eyes, like arrows of love.
In the turkic vocabulary there is the word «chuga», which means a caftan of a special military cut, which was an integral part of the equipment of the chuian part of the mongol army, from which the gens of the polovtsian Khan Chugui also came.
After the chugai tribe became part of the khazars, they settled in the Donets basin, where they founded a small fortress on Donets high promontory. Them were help the khazars, which controlled the way from Kiev to the Kingdom of Bosporus and further to Byzantium.
The population in ancient Chugaev is attributed by archaeologists to the saltov-mayatsk culture, which was followed by almost all the tribes of the Khazar Khaganate.
Russian-slavic cultural influence in the city was insignificant. After the collapse of the Khazar Khaganate in the 10th century, the city belonged to the Pereyaslav and Chernigov principalities. The city maintained its independence and was part of the zone of the so-called «Black Hoods», capable of taking independent actions on the border of the influence of Kievan Rus.
After the mongol invasion, the city continued to exist for some time, but as a settlement, the population of which was gradually eroded by various ethnic influences.
The cossacks who came here three centuries later did not find any hints of the existence of the city here. Based on the decree of Ivan The Terrible, they founded a new city here, which took only the name from the past history of this place.
