Giovanni Segantini Italy

Giovanni Segantini is a well-know yet still mysterious Italian artist.
His manner is so original and precise we can never overestimate it.

Segantini is one of those artists whose heritage is partly progressive, partly cinservative but always sincere and bright. From the point of view of style, this is figurative art with a trend for colour play that was quite unusual for the 2nd half of the 19th century. Segantini uses plos of rural life to express his own vision of nature - warm, inviting, sunny at times and sometimes gloomy and mysterious.

People in Segantini's works are typical representatives of their class - farmers and petty tradesmen. They are depicted as hard-working, non-reflexive, mildly emotional and somewhat naive. This character scrutiny sometimes may be associated with earlier works of Dutch masters who would also dwell on the same social class reality. The difference is, however, in details.

If Dutch Renessaince artists focus on emotions of their models and try to make characters in paintings more complex, more refined, then, on the contrary, Segantini shows people as somewhat inferior to the power of nature.
Although they take some place and they are shown with a penchant for artistic detail, the shadowplay and colouring put people in the second place. They are part of the nature's instinctual game, they cannot be taken out of the landscape.

Apart from landscapes and pastoral topics, Segantini devotes himself to creating new forms of religious paintings, in which saints look less rigorous and more humane than before.

Giovanni Segantini is a brilliant example of Italian symbolism and neoimpressionism in art, one of the artists that are underestimated by the public but highly valued by critics, an innovator for his epoch and a genius from the point of view of the 21st century.

His vivid colours, harmonious proportions and subtle glaze, as well as the richness of cultural links and associations make this artist a 'must see' and a dream of art lovers all over the globe anf throughout the time.
