Глава 1. - Chapter One
Хоть я и не ментор Ваш, да и роли такой на себя брать не желаю, но по крайней мере имею право пожелать, чтобы Вы, так сказать, меня-то не окомпрометировали… - Though I am not your mentor, nor wish to be, at least I have a right to require that you shall not actually compromise me.
Да ведь у меня и денег нет. Чтобы проиграться, надо их иметь. - I have no money for gambling.
Значит, Вас кто-нибудь и где-нибудь проучил. - Of course, one always learns something everywhere.
- Неужели ж Вы думаете, что монсиньор бросит для Вас свой кофе?
- Так знайте ж, что мне наплевать на кофе Вашего монсиньора! Если Вы сию же минуту не кончите с моим паспортом, то я пойду к нему самому.
[- Do you suppose that Monsignor is going to put aside his coffee for you?
- Let me tell you that I am going to spit into that coffee! Yes, and if you do not get me my passport visaed this very minute, I shall take it to Monsignor myself.]
Я еретик и варвар, и мне все эти архиепископы, кардиналы, монсиньоры и прочее, - всё равно. - I was a heretic and a barbarian – «Je suis heretique et barbare», - and these archbishops and cardinals and monsignors, and the rest of them, meant nothing at all to me.
Мне во что бы ни стало нужны деньги; иначе я погибла. - Come what may, I must have money, otherwise I shall be ruined.
Я только генералова падчерица. - I am merely the General's step-daughter.
- Француз красивее, но он подлее; а англичанин, сверх того, что честен, ещё в десять раз богаче.
- Да; но зато француз - маркиз, и умнее.
[-Because, though the Frenchman is the handsomer of the two, he is also the baser; whereas the Englishman is not only a man of honour, but ten times the wealthier of the pair.
- Yes? But then the Frenchman is a marquis, and the cleverer of the two.]
Что меня действительно развлекает, как Вы беситесь. - It amuses me to see you grow angry.
Но покамест Вы мне нужны - мне надо Вас беречь. - For the time being I want you, so I must keep you.

Глава 2. - Chapter Two
Почему игра хуже какого бы то ни было способа добывания денег, например, хоть торговли? - For why is gambling a whit worse than any other method of acquiring money? How, for instance, is it worse than trade?
«Играют по маленькой»… Тем хуже, потому что это мелкая корысть. - «One may always gamble moderately» - to do so makes things worse, since, in that case, the profits too will always be moderate.
Что для Ротшильда мелко, то для меня очень богато. - What may seem a small sum to a Rothschild may seem a large sum to me.
Насчёт наживы и выигрыша: так люди и не на рулетке, а и везде только и делают, что друг у друга что-нибудь отбивают или выигрывают. - It is not the fault of stakes or of winnings that everywhere men can be found winning, can be found depriving their fellows of something, just as they do at roulette.
К чему самого себя обманывать? Самое пустое и нерасчётливое занятие. - Why should I so deceive myself? I could see that the whole thing was a vain and unreasoning pursuit.
Есть две игры, одна - джентльменская, другая - плебейская, корыстная, игра всякой сволочи. - In fact, there are two sorts of gaming-namely, the game of the gentleman and the game of the plebs - the game for gain, and the game of the herd.
Он отошёл с улыбкой и выдержал характер. - Yet even then he rose with a smile, and thus preserved his reputation.
Кошки у него скребли на сердце. - His money bags must be chafing his heart.
Настоящий джентльмен, если бы проиграл и всё своё состояние, не должен волноваться. - Even if a gentleman should lose his whole substance, he must never give way to annoyance.
Деньги до того должны быть ниже джентльменства, что почти не стоит об них заботиться. - Money must be so subservient to gentility as never to be worth a thought.
У меня очень мало денег и, следовательно, я не могу слишком приметно проиграться, если б даже и стал играть. - I had very little money in my possession, and that, consequently, I was hardly in a position to indulge in any conspicuous play, even if I did gamble.
Так Вы решительно продолжаете быть убеждены, что рулетка Ваш единственный исход и спасение? - Then are you so certain that your roulette-playing will get us out of our difficulties?
Что касается до моей уверенности непременно выиграть, то пускай это будет смешно, я согласен, но чтоб оставили меня в покое. - Possibly my certainty about winning may seem to you ridiculous; yet, pray leave me in peace.

Глава 3. - Chapter Three
Посади за стол, и ноги на стол. - Invite a man to your table, and soon he will place his feet upon it.
Влюбиться в пятьдесят пять лет, с такою силою страсти, - конечно, несчастие. - To fall in love at fifty-five, and with such vehemence, is indeed a misfortune!

Глава 4. - Chapter Four
Русские даже играть не способны. - Russians are no good at the game.
Какая безобразная мысль! - Какая русская мысль! - What an extraordinary idea. And what a Russian idea!
Уж такой честный, что подойти к нему страшно. - So honourable is he that it is dreadful to have anything to do with him.
Все работают, как волы, и все копят деньги, как жиды. - They work like oxen, and amass wealth like Jews.
Уж это идеал, когда сама жертва радуется, что её на заклание ведут. - It is simply idyllic for the victim to rejoice when he is made over into pledge.
Я уж лучше хочу дебоширить по-русски или разживаться на рулетке. - For my own part, I would rather grow fat after the Russian manner, or squander my whole substance at roulette.
Вы нестерпимо начинаете форсить, чуть лишь Вам капельку позволят забыться. - You are becoming an insufferable farceur whenever you are given the least chance.

Глава 5. - Chapter Five
Согласитесь сами, что если б утопающий не утопал, то он не считал бы соломинку за древесный сук. - You yourself will agree that, unless a drowning man was drowning he would not mistake a straw for the trunk of a tree.
Я Ваш раб, а рабов не стыдятся, и раб оскорбить не может. - I am your slave - and slaves cannot be shamed or offended.
Речи молокососа. - You talk like a child.
При всяком положении можно поставить себя с достоинством. - It is always possible to comport oneself with dignity.
Если тут борьба, то она ещё возвысит, а не унизит. - If one has a quarrel it ought to elevate rather than to degrade one.
Прямо из прописи! - A maxim straight from the copybook!
Я, пожалуй, и достойный человек, а поставить себя с достоинством не умею. - though I am a man of self-respect, I am unable to carry off a situation properly.
Тут дело в форме. - It is all a question of mode.
Мы, русские, таковы, что слишком богато и многосторонне одарены, чтобы скоро приискать себе приличную форму. - Мe Russians are too richly and multifariously gifted to be able at once to find the proper mode of expression.
Большею частью мы, русские, так богато одарены, что для приличной формы нам нужна гениальность. - Most of us are so bounteously endowed with intellect as to require also a spice of genius to choose the right form of behaviour.
Оттого-то так и падки наши барышни до французов, что форма у них хороша. - That is why our good ladies are so fond of Frenchmen-the Frenchman's manners, they say, are perfect!
Может быть, петухи и хороши. - Cocks may be excellent birds.
Я даже согласен, что я не только формы, но и достоинств никаких не имею. - I agree that I have none, nor yet any dignity.
У меня ни одной человеческой мысли нет в голове. - I have not a single human thought in my head.
Когда я рассчитывал купить Вас деньгами? - When have I thought to purchase you with money?
Вы понимаете, почему на меня нельзя сердиться: я просто сумасшедший. - You know why you ought not to be angry with me - that I am simply an imbecile.
Пользуйтесь, пользуйтесь моим рабством, пользуйтесь! - Revel, I pray you, in my slavery-revel in it.
Знаете ли Вы, что я когда-нибудь Вас убью? - Do you know that sometimes I could kill you?
Вы доведёте меня до горячки. - You are driving me to frenzy.
Да что мне Ваш гнев? Я люблю без надежды и знаю, что после этого в тысячу раз больше буду любить Вас. - Why should I fear your anger? I love without hope, and know that hereafter I shall love you a thousand times more.
Я всё самолюбие при вас теряю, и мне всё равно. - I lose all conceit when I am with you, and everything ceases to matter.
Удовольствие всегда полезно, а дикая, беспредельная власть – хоть над мухой – ведь это тоже своего рода наслаждение. - To give pleasure is always of use; and, as for barbarous, unlimited power-even if it be only over a fly-why, it is a kind of luxury.
Человек - деспот от природы и любит быть мучителем. - Man is a despot by nature, and loves to torture.
Иди на погибель, а я в стороне останусь. - Either you kill whom I bid you, or I will have nothing more to do with you.

Глава 6. - Chapter Six
Идёт - точно всех чести удостаивает. - Yet she walked as though she were conferring a favour upon everybody by so doing.
Горд, как павлин. - Yet, for all his air of peacock-like conceit.
Что-то баранье в выражении лица, по-своему заменяющее глубокомыслие. - His face wore a sheepish air which might have passed for profundity.
Прибил, дескать, и ничего не помнит. - The client committed the murder-that is true; but he has no recollection of having committed it.
Прощайте. С этих пор мы чужие. - Farewell. From henceforth we are strangers.
Кроме хлопот и неприятностей, я не видал от вас ничего. - From you I have never had anything but trouble and unpleasantness.
Честь имею пребыть вашим слугою. - Also I have the honour to remain your obedient servant.
Генерал, заарестовать нельзя за буйство прежде совершения буйства. - General, one cannot arrest a man for brawling until he has brawled.
Ради бога, оставьте это бессмысленное намерение! - For God's sake, do put an end to this senseless scheme of yours!
Иногда русские за границей бывают слишком трусливы и ужасно боятся того, что скажут и как на них поглядят, и будет ли прилично вот то-то и то-то? - одним словом держат себя точно в корсете, особенно претендующие на значение. - Russians, when abroad, are over-apt to play the poltroon, to watch all their words, and to wonder what people are thinking of their conduct, or whether such and such a thing is 'comme il faut.' In short, they are over-apt to cosset themselves, and to lay claim to great importance.
Это вовсе не значит, что пред людьми я мокрая курица и уж, конечно, не барону «бить меня палкой». - It would not greatly matter if I figured as a draggle-tailed cockerel, and the Baron were to give me a good thrashing.
Мне захотелось над всеми ними насмеяться, а самому выйти молодцом. - The fact was that I desired to have the laugh of them all, and to come out myself unscathed.
Я не мокрая курица… - I was at least no draggle-tailed cockerel!
Марья Филипповна с генералом ещё третьего дня крупно поговорила. - Three days ago, Maria Philipovna had some high words with the General.

Глава 7. - Chapter Seven
Только новички, и особенно русские барышни, прельщаются французами. Всякому же порядочному существу тотчас же заметна и нестерпима эта казёнщина раз установившихся форм салонной любезности, развязности и весёлости. - None but greenhorns and excessively Russian people feel an attraction towards the French; for, to any man of sensibility, such a compendium of outworn forms-a compendium which is built up of drawing-room manners, expansiveness, and gaiety-becomes at once over-noticeable and unbearable.
Я к Вам по делу. - I have come to see you on business.
Фи, какая щепетильность и какие утончённости! - Oh fie! What refinements and subtleties!
И чего Вам извиняться? - Besides, what have you to express regret for?
Я, конечно, не хочу тебя выдрать за уши, но для виду позволь себя выдрать за уши. - Of course we do not wish to turn you out, yet, for the sake of appearance's, you must permit yourself to be turned out.
Так ведь это почти всё равно. - Nothing can matter very much.
Если никакие просьбы не имеют на вас влияния, то, позвольте Вас уверить, - будут приняты меры. - Seeing that my solicitations have had no effect upon you, it is my duty to mention that other measures will be taken.
Тут есть начальство, Вас вышлют сегодня же. - There exist here police, you must remember, and this very day they shall send you packing.
Вы думаете, что Вас оставят в покое? - Do you suppose that you will be allowed to do such things?
Поверьте. Вас никто здесь не боится! - Just try doing them, and see if any one will be afraid of you!
Вам точно приятно, что выйдет история! - One would think that it actually pleased you to have scenes!
Вам не удовлетворения надобно, а истории! - Indeed, it is a brawl rather than genuine satisfaction that you are seeking.

Глава 8. - Chapter Eight
Она пожелала от Вас отвязаться и послала Вас под дубину барона. - She can have meant to get rid of you, or to earn for you a thrashing from the Baron's cudgel.
У Вас глаза сверкают. - Your eyes look very fiery.
Вы не имеете ни малейших прав обнаруживать Ваши подозрения. - You have no right whatever to be suspicious.
Я сбит с толку и теперь ещё многого не могу сообразить. - I stand confounded, and have no further opinions to offer.
Я по глазам Вашим убеждён, что Вы и тут более меня знаете! - Your look convinces me that you know more about it than I do.
Я, кажется, и в этом гораздо больше Вашего знаю. - I think I do know more about it than you do.
Вас предупреждать было нечего, потому что Вы ничего не могли сделать. - It would have done no good to warn you for the reason that you could have effected nothing.
Чёрт возьми, тут ничего не разберёшь! - The devil takes it, but I was left no choice in the matter.
Уйти от детей - значит уж совершенно их бросить, остаться - значит защитить их интересы, а может быть, и спасти клочки имения. - For me to go and desert the children now would mean their total abandonment; whereas, if I remain, I should be able to defend their interests, and, perhaps, to save a moiety of their property.
Всё дело в наследстве. - It is a question of succession.
Все женщины таковы. И самые гордые из них - самыми-то пошлыми рабами и выходят! - All women are like that. Even the proudest of them become abject slaves where marriage is concerned.

Глава 9. - Chapter Nine
Помещица и московская барыня, la baboulinka, о которой пускались и получались телеграммы, умиравшая и не умершая и которая вдруг сама, собственнолично, явилась к нам как снег на голову. - Landowner and grande dame of Moscow - the "La Baboulenka" who had caused so many telegrams to be sent off and received-who had been dying, yet not dying-who had, in her own person, descended upon us even as snow might fall from the clouds!
Естественно, что я стоял пред нею истуканом от удивления. - Naturally enough, I stood petrified with astonishment.
И эдакую-то ждали видеть в гробу, схороненную и оставившую наследство! - And this is the woman whom they had thought to see in her grave after making her will!
Да она всех нас и весь отель переживёт! - Yet she will outlive us, and every one else in the hotel.
Она весь отель теперь перевернёт на сторону! - She will turn the place upside down!
Ну что ж ты, батюшка, стал предо мною, глаза выпучил! Поклониться-поздороваться не умеешь, что ли? Аль загордился, не хочешь? - My good sir, what are you standing there for, with your eyes almost falling out of your head? Cannot you come and say how-do-you-do? Are you too proud to shake hands?
А у них и здесь часы заведены и все церемонии. - Do they observe the convenances, and keep up appearances?
Просвистались, так и за границу! - When abroad, our Russian people always cut a dash.
Да, это была катастрофа для всех! - Truly the Grandmother's arrival seemed to be a catastrophe for everybody!
А я ноги на плечи, да и сюда. - Well, I picked up my heels, and came here.
Глаза опустила, манерничает и церемонничает; сейчас видна птица; актриса какая-нибудь. - How the woman sticks out her eyes at me! How she mows and minces!
Небось от рулетки не отходишь? Весь просвистался? - By heavens, are you never going to drop that roulette of yours? Are you going to whistle all your property away?

Глава 10. - Chapter Ten
Хорошо, что у них клопов нет. - Mercifully it contains no bugs.
Колпаки вы, - все колпаки, как я вижу. Не умеете отечества своего поддержать. - You are a blockhead-an utter blockhead! I can see that clearly. You, who does not even know how to carry his breeding.
Мужчины все петухи; вот бы и дрались. - All men are crowing cocks, and that is why they quarrel.
Заплати им вперёд, почтительнее будут. - Pay them in advance, so that they may show me some respect.
Что она слуга, так и бросить её? - Because she is my servant, is that a reason for turning her out?
Тоже ведь живой человек. - She is only a human being like the rest of us.
Одна-то и нос на улицу показать не смеет. - She would never dare to show her nose in the street alone.
Ишь, какой генерал; я и сама генеральша. - A pretty General you are, to be sure! I am a general's widow myself.
И чего вас такой хвост за мной, в самом деле, потащится? - But, after all, why should I drag the whole party with me?
Денег я тебе не дам. - I am not going to give you any of my money.
Видна птица по полёту. - A bird of passage, evidently.
Видно, что ноготок востёр. - I can see that she has her shoes polished.
Волка бояться - в лес не ходить. - Who fears the wolf should never enter the forest.
Вот язык-то звенит! - What a chattering tongue you have!

Глава 11. - Chapter Eleven
Золото ссыпай сюда, в кошелёк, а билеты спрячь. - Put the gold into this purse here, and count the bank notes.
Да вам-то всем какое дело? Не ваши проиграю - свои! - What has that got to do with you? It is not your money that I am going to lose; it is my own.
Всю-то жизнь столько денег не видывала. - Never in my life have I seen so much money.
Ведь она, как ребёнок, рада, что дорвалась, и, как водится, проиграется в пух. - Now the Grandmother was as merry as a child which plays with thistle-down.
Да ведь каждый фридрихсдор, поставленный бабушкою давеча, ложился болячкою на сердце генерала, бесил Де-Грие и доводил до исступления m-lle de Cominges, у которой мимо рта проносили ложку. - Every ten-gulden piece which), - the Grandmother staked must have raised a blister on the General's heart, and maddened De Griers, and driven Mlle. de Cominges almost to frenzy with the sight of this spoon dangling before her lips.
Если бы не дума о Полине, то я просто весь отдался бы одному комическому интересу предстоящей развязки и хохотал бы во всё горло. - Had not my mind been so full of Polina, I should have given myself up to the comical piquancy of the impending denouement, and laughed my fill at it.
Я Вас прошу, умоляю, в пояс Вам кланяюсь по-русски, - Вы один, один можете нас спасти! - I beg and beseech you, I kiss the hem of your garment, as our Russian saying has it, for you, and only you, can save us.

Глава 12. - Chapter Twelve
Брось этот пакостный зеришко к чёрту! - To the devil with that zero!
Ставь все четыре тысячи гульденов на красную. - Stake four thousand gulden upon the red.
Я Вам дело говорил, как могу отвечать я за все шансы? - Madame, I only explained the game to you. How am I to answer for every mischance which may occur in it?
Жива не хочу быть - отыграюсь. - Never mind. I cannot rest until I have won back my losses.
Отыграюсь! - I am determined to retrieve my losses.
Позвать этих болванов! - Call those fools of bearers.
Некогда с вами тут. - I can't talk to you here.
А ну тебя с молоком! Хлещи сам, а у меня от него брюхо болит. - Have done with you and your milk! Go and stuff yourself as much as you like, but my stomach simply recoils from the idea.
Ах, разбойники! - The thieves!
Подавись моими деньгами! - may my money choke you!
Стояло бы четыре тысячи вместо десяти, мы бы четыре тысячи выиграли, а то что теперь?.. - Surely it would be worth our while to stake four thousand instead of a hundred, for we might win another four thousand, and then...!
Это всё ты, всё ты! - It was your fault before-all your fault!
Бедный генерал! - Poor General!
Ну, поставь раз, как он говорит, - посмотрим: может, и в самом деле выйдет. - Stake just once, as he advises, and then we shall see what we shall see. Of course, his stake might win.
Мы всё проиграли! - We had lost it all!
Пошёл, пошёл! Ничего не понимает, а туда же суётся! - Away with you! Though you fuss and fuss, you don't even know what you're talking about.
Как мы не бились, - всё проиграли! - We had lost everything in hand.
Знай сверчок свой шесток! - Let the cricket stick to its hearth.
Пятнадцать тысяч целковых профершпилила! - I have fooled away fifteen thousand roubles.
Отвяжитесь, черти! Вам что за дело? - Away with you, you rascals! What have my affairs to do with you?
Чего эта козлиная борода ко мне лезет? - Why, in particular, do you come sneaking here with your goat's beard?
А тебе, пиголица, что надо? - And what do you (m-lle Blanche) want of me?
Чего юлишь? - What are you finicking for?
Так ты на мою смерть рассчитываешь? Пошёл! - So you have been counting upon my death, have you? Away with you!
Я своё просвистала, а не ваше! - It is not their money that I have been squandering, but my own!
Всегда считала его самым пустейшим и легкомысленным человеком. Затащил на себя форсу, что генерал (из полковников, по отставке получил), да и важничает. - I always looked upon him as a futile, frivolous fellow who gave himself unconscionable airs on the fact of his being a general (though he only became one because he retired as a colonel).
Всё знаю, как вы телеграмму за телеграммой в Москву посылали - «скоро ли, дескать, старая бабка ноги протянет?» - I know all about the sending of the telegrams to
inquire whether «the old woman is likely to turn up her toes soon».
Знаю, что характеришко у тебя скверный - оса! Укусишь, так вспухнет… - True, I know that you are a vixen by nature - that you are a wasp which will sting one if one touches it…
Ну, хочешь? Бросай всё здесь и поезжай со мною. Ведь тебе деваться-то некуда; да и неприлично тебе с ними теперь. - Now, will you leave everything here, and come away with me? Otherwise, I do not know what is to become of you, and it is not right that you should continue living with these people.
Велик курятник – и для цыплят найдётся место. - The Great Foster-Father [=The Great Poulterer] can find for all his chicks a place.
Не доведёт тебя этот французишка до добра! - That Frenchman will never bring you good of any sort.
Ну, ну, не хмурься! Не стану размазывать. - Now, now! Do not frown! But I do not intend to slur things over.
Только смотри, чтобы не было худа, понимаешь? - You will take care that no harm befalls you, will you not?
Ты девка умная; жаль мне тебя будет. - For you are a girl of sense, and I am sorry for you.
В Москве, как будешь без места бегать, - ко мне приходи; отрекомендую куда-нибудь. - If, when in Moscow, you have no place where you can lay your head, come and see me, and I will give you a recommendation.
Катастрофа уже разразилась, было о чём подумать. - So the crisis had come! I needed time for its consideration.
Мистер А.? Вот ещё для меня загадка! - Mr. A.? Well, he was another problem for me to solve.
Жива не хочу быть, отыграюсь! Марш, без расспросов! - I cannot rest until I have retrieved my losses. March on ahead, and ask me no questions.
Белены, что ли, вы все объелись! - March on ahead, and ask me no questions.
Воля Ваша, сударыня, не пойду. - With your leave, Madame," I said, "I will not go with you.
Не хочу быть ни свидетелем, ни участником; избавьте! - I merely intend neither to witness nor to join in your play.
Пошли бог сны ангельские! - May God send her dreams of angels!
Ох, уж эта мне заграница! - Не к добру. - This is all that foreign travel has done for us!

Глава 13. - Chapter Thirteen
Всё это пролетело, как сон. - Yet now the actual crisis has passed away like a dream.
Теперь я один-одинёшенек. - At present I am lonely and alone.
На другой день она проигралась вся окончательно. Так и должно было случиться: кто раз, из таких, попадается на эту дорогу, тот - точно с снеговой горы в санках катится, всё быстрее и быстрее. - Next day she lost every gulden that she possessed.
Things were bound to happen so, for persons of her type who have once entered upon that road descend it with ever-increasing rapidity, even as a sledge descends a toboggan-slide.
Вы срамите русское имя, сударыня! - You were smirching the fair name of Russia, Madam.
