1 – INT. IN THE ROOM – BY DAY

In the vizier of camera we see the armchair. This is expensive old one which is covered with black leather and has the oak inserts in the frontal parts of the armrest.

MAN’S VOICE #1
Are you ready?
MAN’S VOICE #2
Quite we are.
MAN’S VOICE #1
Well we carry.

Very soon we hear the steps of two men, their boots hits at the parquet.

MAN’S VOICE # 1
Be careful...

Two men coming into the frame carry to very armchair and put at it the boy twelve years old. One of the men corrects at the boy the velvet blazer, carefully puts boy’s hands at the armrests. After that the men come away.

MAN’S VOICE # 1
Gentlemen, could you leave us in private?

The steps are being heard, the door is being closed. In the frame the man with the moustache appears, he is dressed with the square blazer of the fashion of the beginning of the 20th century. The man leans over the boy, intently watches at his bloodless face and slightly corrects the strand of hair at the boy’s front.

After the man leaves the frame we hear some fuss, the camera slightly moves. The focus is being broken but promptly becomes right. A match strikes. We hear that magnesium powder flares. The flash illuminates sitting in the armchair dead boy.

After a moment we see ready photo. The photo slightly fades, gets yellow, is being covered with the scratches… and now at the photo the wave comes, and another one, like it is placed in water… and now the photo swings at the green marine waves. We hear the clamor of flying seagull and approximating splash of the oars. Very soon we see a board of the tarred fisher’s boat. Somebody’s hand reaches for the photo and takes it out of water.

The big title: CHRONOS
The small title: The first part: Stranger

2 – NAT. SEASIDE — BY DAY

Bird’s-eye we see the narrow strip of the land that divides infinite waters. In the left has greenish color, in the right – blue. We fly over this strip of the land and we see only sand, grass and rare trees. There are neither houses nor people. Only the narrow way tells us that people sometimes are here.

3 – NAT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

We see the house at the seaside, a hundred steps from the water. By the house the woman washes the bed linen.

Her bronzed forehead is wet for the sweat. Her hands are overworked with the washing and the labor at the ground. The seagull screams loudly and casts the shadow upon the woman’s face. But it doesn’t matter for her, she crumples the white textile and froths water. The seagull screams again but the woman is immersed in work.  When the seagull utters the shrill scream and flies as close as near contacts with its wing the woman’s face, she casts her look up and follows the bird with her look, wipes her hands on an apron and comes into the house.

4 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

We see the simple interior: the white walls, the rough rustic furniture, the wicker rugs on the boarded floor.

Opening the chest the woman gets out the white bundle. Putting it at the bed she unwraps the one. This is a man shirt. The woman looks at it a long time, palms it, she carries it to her face. Closing her eyes she inhales the smell. She presses the shirt to her face. She sits slightly swinging. We hear the old clock ticks, swings the pendulum.

Finally the woman stands up. Carefully, like this is not the shirt but sleeping child, she hides the shirt to the chest. She lies down at the bed like the unbearable burden presses at her shoulders. Closing her eyes she sees with her inner vision…

5 – NAT. ON THE SEA – BY DAY
(Anna’s memory)
On the sea the small fisher’s boat with the sail swings. The young male  stands at the boat. He waves his hand.
(the end of the memory)

6 – NAT. THE SEA / UNDER WATER – BY DAY

Trough green water we see the hand. This is the girl’s hand on the field of the sand bottom. We move up and see the arm bend, the long red hair which like the actinia swings in mobile bottom water. Higher we see the face. This is the face of the girl. We inspect the face, the face on the field of the pale bottom sand.

The girl opens her eyes, turns, pushes the sand bottom with her feet and with the loud either scream or inhale she emerges from sea water.

7 – NAT. THE WAY ALONG THE SEA — BY DAY

At the infinite dusty way, along the sea, at the horse-drawn, smoking a little pipe a man drives. He is barefoot. His shirt is unbuttoned. His hat is old. His face is absolutely ordinary. He is forty, may be some less. The unshaved face makes him older. This is MARCUS.

In the cart his high boots lay. There is a solid package where something angular and uncomfortable sticking is. Sometimes the man turns back, looks at the package, and the little fires of admiration flare in his eyes like he carries in the cart his own happiness.

Not far of the way Marc sees the walking in dreaminess girl. The girl is sixteen y. o., she is slightly angular but already becoming like a young woman. This is MARINA.

MARCUS
(to the horse)
St-o-o-o-p!

The horse obeys. The man patiently waits he will seen by the girl. The horse whinnies and the girl sees Marcus. She comes to the cart and without talking sit at. Some time they drive keeping the silence. The girl looks at the angular package.

MARINA
Uncle Marcus, what is this?

MARCUS
You will know on our arriving.

8 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

Coming into the house Marcus puts the angular package at the table then he goes to the kitchen, scoops water from the bucket and drinks greedily.  Coming back to the table he evolves the package, sits down the stool and looks with admiration at the opened for watching gramophone. He palms one of its grains.

MARCUS
Marina, give me a screwdriver.

MARINA
Where is it?

MARCUS
It is in commode upper box.

Marina looks into the box, sorts out trash stored there. She sees the old photo, takes it and inspects. On the photo there is the same boy whom we have seen before.
MARCUS
Where are you?

Marina takes the screwdriver and gives it to Marcus without taking her eyes off the photo.

MARINA
Who is this?

MARCUS
The devil only knows. I found it strait in the sea. You have not, probably, been born yet.

MARINA
He is very beautiful.

Marina shows the photo to Marcus. But the man sees the photo like the first time.

MARINA
Give it to me, uncle Marcus!

MARCUS
Well take it, I need not it.

Like fascinated, without taking her eyes off the photo, Marina egresses from the house and the man intently inspecting the gramophone starts to twist the screw from its bottom.

9 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY EVENING

The strong wind blows. In horizon the black clouds are seen. Marcus hurries to the coast, pulls away his boat farther of water. The see disturbs more and more. It gets darker. Storm begins. Strong wind swings the grass and the trees.

10 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

The wind beats with the shutters, gets under the skirt of Anna when she takes away the shirts from the strings.

11 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – LATER

In the dark room the lamp fires. The butterfly beats by the glass flask. We hear the wind howls behind the window. Marina leaves her copybook. She quietly reads something slightly moving her lips. Sometimes she lifts her eyes and looks into the dark window, after that she returns again to reading.

Finally Marina closes the copybook, extracts from the table box taken from Marcus photo and puts it before her. She sits long looking to the photo with some especially look.

MARINA
Ìoì...

ANNA
What, honey?

Mother looks aside from the yarn, looks to the daughter, but the girl changes her mind at the last moment and hides the photo.

MARINA
No, nothing…

11.2 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Anna dreams. Suddenly she wakes up of the sounds of shooting. This is a far machinegun shooting. Anna runs out the house, after her Marina does.

11.3 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Marina and Anna inspect black, covered with the clouds night heaven. Somewhere behind the clouds we hear again the machinegun shooting.   Very soon we hear the hum of shot airplane. Afar, by very horizon we see that burning airplane falls to the sea and bursts.

12 – NAT. THE SEASIDE – BY DAY

With a little knapsack at her shoulder and straw hat at her head, Marina walks along the seaside. She observes the casted at the sand trash: the dry alga and shells, the old boots, the fragments of the broken boats and ships, the polished by the sea glasses, the roots of the trees, the fragments of the cloth and fisher’s nets…

By something the girl passes without stopping. She touches something. Sometimes she takes something and brings it to her nose and inhales the smell.

13 – NAT. NOT FAR FROM ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

From the side of the one neighbor house which stands in a half of mile from the house of the women, Marcus, the neighbor goes. He goes slightly swinging. He is apparently drunk.

In fifty steps from the house he stops, fills a pipe with tobacco and smokes. Ending smoking he turns and goes back. However making ten steps he turns again and goes to Anna’s house. Near the doors he stops.

MARCUS
Is anybody home?

ANNA
(from the house)
Come in!

Marcus comes into the house. But very soon inside of the house we hear the bang, and Marcus fast leaves women’s habitation.

During Marcus without turning back rushes away, Anna appears on the threshold. Anna buttons up her blouse and blows at her front strands of hair. Gradually her irate look loses its power, becomes calm. And now some likeness of pity appears in it.

ANNA
Damned conquer!

14 – NAT. THE SEASIDE – A DAY

Casting away her dress, Marina comes into water. When water rises to her neck she makes several of deep inhales-exhales then exhales all air from her lungs, lays at water and starts to dive. She looks from under water up – to heaven, to her feet…

MARINA’S WHISPER
(out of the scene)
How beautiful is a man when he is sinking. As much of grace and unhurriedness he has. As much sadness and dignity his outlook has...

Marina sinks to the bottom and lays swinging at underwater streams. From the beginning the girl’s heart starts beating faster… then it slows. It beats less and less often… and now in her eyes flashes and color circles appear, outlandish ornaments blinker…

Marina turns to her stomach, pushes the bottom with her feet, and like a rocket zooms over the salty water, emerges with loud either inhale or scream: a-h-h-h-h!

15 – NAT. NOT FAR FROM MARCUS’S HOUSE – BY DAY

17 – NAT. THE SEASIDE – BY DAY

Continuing walking Marina observes casted to the sand trash. Here is a snag like hairy monster… broken boot… dead fish…

Going farther Marina sees laying at sand human figure. A man lays near very water spread wide his hands. He doesn’t move. We cannot understand is he alive or dead.
Scared to death Marina jumps to the grass and ducks down.

MARINA
Mummy, mummy…

The girl’s heart beats loudly and fast. Finally Marina egress the grass and carefully goes forwards.

MARINA’S WHISPER
(out of the scene)
A drowned, a drowned…

When marina comes nearer she sees that the man’s back slightly lifts and downs.
The girl downs for her four and pushes the stranger at his shoulder:

MARINA
Hey, h-e-e-e-y…

18 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

After the window we see the sea. The colored curtain slightly swings. In the room on the bed the man rests. He is immobile and unconscious.   By the man Anna sits watching his face. Suddenly the man slightly opens his mouth touches his dry lips with his dry tongue. He slightly opens his eyes.

MAN
Water…

Anna takes the mug and carries it to stranger’s lips. The man drinks water with greedy swallows. Then he closes his eyes again and sinks to dreaming.

ANNA’S THOUGHTS
He is like a child who drinking mother’s milk calms and falls asleep…

19 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

At the seaside two talk. This is Marina and Anna. We don’t see them. We see only the sea, waves, spume crests. We glance the flying by seagull or albatross.

MARINA
Mom, I am afraid.
ANNA
Me too.
MARINA
Why we are?
ANNA
I don’t know.

20 – NAT. SOMEWHERE AT THE COAST – BY DAY

Slowly Marina gets out every object and inspects it. Here we see the hole cartridge for Revolver, the silver ring with the inscription “Save and keep”, the foreign coin with the image of beauty virgin in denomination of five cents, the tiny penknife. When Marina takes it to the hand, we hear the voice of Anna out of frame.

ANNA
(out of frame)
Your father always carried it with him and never parted, however he didn’t take it to the sea – he was afraid of sinking it.

This is a milky tooth. This is the bit of amber where the ant has frozen. This is a fragment of book page with Japanese hieroglyphs. Marina gets out of knapsack taken from Marcus photo and attentively looks to imagine. Then she carefully puts the photo into the box, closes it with the cover, downs to the fossa. She buries the fossa and rushes out the resort.

21 – INT. IN ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Sitting by the stranger Marina reads aloud.

MARINA
By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: but I found him not. I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, at in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?

Seeing that mother is absent Marina puts the book away and intently inspects the face of the stranger. She touches his hand and fingers. Then she carefully takes the man palm into hers. She palms it, inspects the lines. Making sure that the man sleeps, she nestles to his palm with her cheek. We hear her heart’s pulsation, her heart beats more often and louder.

22 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

We see this scene through the closed window. We see the simple rustic food and the burning lamp on the table. Here is the boiled potato, baked bread, onion, radish and ten eggs. By the table Anna, Marina and the stranger sit. They eat. Finally Anna removes her plate. She looks at the stranger and asks him something. He answers.

Anna stands up, comes to the commode, extracts from the box a pack of cigarettes and gives it to the man. The man taking this gift takes woman’s hand and presses it to his bronze forehead, then contacts it with his lips. Anna looks at Marina and slightly lifts up her brow, kind of saying: his is real gentlemen!

23 – NAT. NOT AFAR OF ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Filling the buckets near the pit, Anna puts the yoke to the shoulder and goes at the path home. Water slightly splashes in the buckets. Toward her, Johan goes. When between of them two steps become, they stop and look to each other.

ANNA
Are you going afar, handsome?

JOHAN
I want to walk to that side for looking what is there. Can I help you?

ANNA
Let you go, handsome! You will help yet.

Saying that, the woman continues her way. And the man turns and looks long after the woman – how she goes, how she slightly swings her slim stature. He looks at her flexible neck and the warm appeared in his eyes.

24 – NAT. THE SEASIDE – BY DAY

Johan finds Marina at the seaside and sits near her. He gets out pack the cigarette, fires the match and starts smoking.

JOHAN
What are you thinking about?

MARINA
About nothing. I just sit, I hear these waves, this wind. I hear and transform into the waves, sand and clouds.

Suddenly they hear the bird scream over them. Marina lifts her head up.

MARINA
Hum, seagull… I called it and it flied here.

They keep silence. Marina extends her hand to the Johan’s cigarette.

MARINA
Give me.

Johan gives cigarette to Marina. Marina inhales two times, coughs and gives the cigarette back to the man.

JOHAN
Probably it is a banal question, but anyway I’ll ask you: whom would you like to be then you grow up?

MARINA
Your eyelashes turn up.

JOHAN
You did not answer…

MARINA
I am already grown up.

JOHAN
Well, whom would you like to be when you become as your mother?

Johan looks to the girl with the interest – how she blinks, how she slightly bites her lip, how she looks for the prompt. Marina stands up.

MARINA
I never become as my mother.

JOHAN
What does it means?

MARINA
I shell die young.

Saying this, Marina goes away.

JOHAN
 (screaming after Marina)
How do you know it?

MARINA
 (turning)
The sea has whispered!

25 – NAT. BY MARKUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

With angry face Marcus egress the house. After him Anna goes.

ANNA
Understand, you are mutt, this is for Marina and me!

Marcus stops. He keeps silence. He sniffs. He breathes hard.

Anna approximates to Marcus and takes his hand at her one. She slightly presses it.

ANNA
Atta boy!

Saying this, Anna goes away. Already from afar she screams turning.

ANNA
Thank you, Marcus! You are real friend!

Marcus with malice wrests the dry mat grass, puts the stem into his mouth and chews it. He looks to the sea.

MARCUS
(with malice)
Pull the veins out of me - you are used to.

26 – NAT. SEASIDE – BEFORE THE SUNRISE

It is darkness. Leaving at the wet sand tracks, at the coast two men go. This is Johan and Marcus. They are both morose. Johan carries the nets. Marcus carries the sail and the oars. At the coast the upset boat rests. The men turns it, pull to water. The set the sail, cast the nets to the bottom. They push the boat to the sea and jump into it.

MARCUS
Sit to the oars.

Johan sits to the oars and starts to oar away the coast.

27– NAT. UNDER WATER – BY DAY

We see Marina’s face under water again. Her eyes are opened. Her hair is like actinia swings in greenish sea water. Some time passes before she pushing the bottom with her feet, emerges to the surface.

28 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY DAY

The sea breathes. The sea shoots with thousand sparks of reflected sun rays. In the middle of this water desert, the boat swings at the quiet waves. Black borders of the boat bleed with the bitumen. The slack sail is black for the dirt and bitumen. We see its sharp contour on blew field of heaven. Johan sits by the oars, Marcus does in the poop and checks the nets.

JOHAN
What about her husband?

MARCUS
If you want fishing, so be it – do, but keep silence.

Keeping the silence some time, Marcus nonetheless answers.

MARCUS
He didn’t back from the sea. Marina exactly at that time was under her heart.

JOHAN
Do you love her?

Not getting the answer, Johan answers his question himself.

JOHAN
So beautiful woman cannot be unloved…

29 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

Marina comes to the seaside and sees Johan. He stands and insistently looks in disturbing blackness. Marina comes to him and looks to the sea too.

MARINA
Sometimes it seems to me that from there somebody looks at me.

JOHAN
Who does?

MARINA
Somebody very ancient and very frightful does. He looks and waits…

JOHAN
With us in Baltics there is ancient folk-belief that once a thousand years very especially virgin comes to the world.

MARINA
What is her feature?

JOHAN
According one version this is a virgin born in the sea.

MARINA
Ì-ì-ì. And what is according another one?

JOHAN
According the second version this is a virgin conceived in the sea.

MARINA
And what then happens?

JOHAN
And then from the abyss to the land exits… who, what do you think?

MARINA
The marine devil does.

JOHAN
Right you are.

MARINA
And it comes for calling her his bride and taking her away to its undersea reign…

JOHAN
How did you guess?

MARINA
Well, it’s evidently.

30 – NAT. IN THE SEA – VERY MORNING

We see new face, the face of a male. It is like devil’s face – unpleasant, sly and angry. The male sits with a rifle at the poop of inflatable boat that through the thick fog goes at the calm morning sea. Except him there are two men at the boat. One of them is by the oars. The men who doesn’t oar inspects in the fog, trying to see just something. All of them are dressed with military form of enemy republic.  Now from the fog a land appears. The men come to the land, take their bags and leave the boat.
(Fade out)

The title: «Part two: Intimacy»

31 - INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

32 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Without rushing Anna goes at the seaside. She inspects sand line. But the seaside is empty. The woman comes to the place where the cost has the sharp turn. Here she decides to short her way. She leaves the sand and comes into the high grass.

Little going at the grass she egresses to the sand again and sees Johan – he stands nude, with his back to the shore, knee-deep in water. He is flexible, lean. His hands like the wings are outstretched. His face is directed up to the sun. Woman froze, admired.

Standing a little time Johan makes the several steps, dives and hides in the waves. The woman attentively inspects the sea, but the man in absent so long that her face expression changes from curiosity to worry. Anna bites her lip. Her heart bits more often.

Unable to stand still she goes out to sand, in the place where man’s clothes lays. Just now a hundred steps afar Johan’s head appears over water. Closing her eyes the woman sighs with a relief and Johan strong rowing swims to the sea.

33 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

Johan sits by the table and attentively inspects interior of opened by him gramophone. He touches with the screwdriver the springs and gears, rotates the actuation handle. Marina sits nearly looking man’s actions. Suddenly inside of the apparatus something clicks.

JOHAN
That’s all.

Johan sets the bottom part of the gramophone to its place. Marcus gives to Johan the record inside of very old pack. Johan takes the vinyl and reads an inscription.

JOHAN
Claudio Monteverdi. Madrigal. The Lamentation of the Nymph. Perform… well, it doesn’t matter…

Johan carefully extracts the record out of the pack, keeping it for the margins, he blows away the dust and sets it to the disc of the gramophone.  He rotates   the actuation handle, moves the start lever.

MARINA
Wait, let me sit more comfortable.

Marina moves the stool closer. Johan with a gesture offers to Marcus sitting, but Marcus the same way answers to Johan: I am fine as it is. When the vinyl starts rotating Johan carefully downs the needle. At the moment from the gramophone trumpet specific scratch and hiss go, after which almost immediately music and singing in Italian begin.

THE SINGING
Amor", dicea, il ciel mirando, il pi; ferm;, "dove, dov'; la f;che'l traditor giur;?"

This is an old ballad. From the first sounds Marina’s face loses its carelessness and becomes extremely serious. Her looks aims afar. Very soon in her eyes the tears appear. The tears fill her eyes, flow at the cheeks like all sorrow of the world in a moment falls onto her.

34 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY EVENING

We look at heavy, purple setting sun. We see not Marina and Johan, but we hear their voices.

MARINA
What about this song is?

JOHAN
The nymph sings the song. Her lover leaved her for terrestrial girl. Nymph tells that even if with her rival the eyes more beautiful than with her, the one has no in her soul such tenderness and fidelity as she does. The nymph prays gods about giving back love to her or depriving her of life…

35 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Anna boils water over the fire, fills the basin. Undressing and staying only with bottom skirt, the woman wets sponge in evaporated water and starts washing her strong body. At some moment she glances in the mirror and sees that Johan stands at the threshold behind her back. He stands and looks, but his look is not lustful but rather confused.

Anna turns to him and downs her hands, showing to the man beauty of her body kind of saying: “What are you waiting? We are alone in the house. Come here…” But Johan confusing downs his head. Understanding that the man will not accept her invitation, the woman turns back to him, downs to hot water the sponge and continues washing.

36 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

In the darkness by fire three men sit. These are the same men dressed with uniform of enemy army . One of them extracts from the bag a bank of stew and opens it with a bayonet knife. With the spoons the men start to eat stew.

37 – INT. IN ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

It is night. The silence is so deep that we even don’t hear the marine waves behind the window.
Anna rests in the bed with opened eyes and looks to the ceiling. Now she closes her eyelids and for her inner vision Johan appears. But his image is not whole but fragmented. That she looks his hands with beauty long fingers, that she does his slim shoulders.

Woman’s heart starts beating louder and breath becomes more often. Her palm on its own starts caressing woman’s breasts. Under the blanket her palm slowly slides through the abdomen to the groin… The woman fast sits up. She breathes hard. Her heart beats so strong that its pulse is being heard in her ears. Anna puts on the dress at her nude body and leaves home.

38 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Whitening in the darkness Anna approximates to little summer house. She extends her hand for opening the door, but suddenly starts slowly, kind of being afraid her own impulse, retreating.

The woman makes a step backwards. Then she does one more else and one more else. She turns to the summer house with her back, she is ready to surrender and come back to the bed. However at the last moment she turns again, comes to little house, takes the door handle, opens the door and comes in.

39 – INT. SUMMER HOUSE – LATER

Landing inside Anna sees that Johan sleeps not, but rests putting his hands behind his head. Somewhat time they look to each other. Finally Johan stands up and nude come to the woman for understands her wish. Johan pulls off the dress from woman’s shoulders. The one falls to the floor with quiet whisper. Anna palms at the chest of Johan, at his plane firm abdomen. Her palm moves downer – to his groin. She takes her breath away. Grabbing the “power” of Johan, Anna leads him like a horse to the bed. Casting away her shame the woman lies down at her back, spreads her hips and admits the man into her…

40 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY MORNING

41 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – LATER

Marcus sits in front of the house and repairs broken high boot. He nails down the base with tiny nails. Not far from the house an old boat rests. Soon Johan comes to Marcus. He tells nothing but keeping silence looks at working Marcus.

JOHAN
I want go to the sea alone, could you give me your boat?

MARCUS
Take.

Johan pulls under from the barn roof the sticking up piece of iron.

JOHAN
Good steel, the spring one. I could make something of it.

MARCUS
Well, you are impudent!

Johan stand static waiting the answer.

MARCUS
Take.

When Johan goes away the barn for twenty steps, Marcus screams.

MARCUS
If you catch more than the past time, I’ll give away to you my old boat!

42 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

The stems are shaking in the wind. At the sand along the sea the shadow slides. This is Marina, she hurries somewhere. Now the girl stops. She looks at her palms and sees that her fingers shake.

MARINA
(her thoughts)
You cannot do it this way! It’s impossible he would think you rush to him. Catch your breath. Relax. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale else. That’s all, now go.

MARINA
(her thoughts)
What for this fish is dying? For nothing does, only for we, people fill our belly...

Seeing girl’s confusion Johan takes the living fish at his hands and gives the one to Marina. She takes without finking. During Marina inspects the fish at her hands Johan pulls the boat to the land.

MARINA
What for did you give me?

JOHAN
You can free it, if you want.

Marina looks at the fish at her hands, how the one inflates the gills, how moves weakly its tail. Marina downs the fish in water and the one slow moving with its tail, swims away. Marina looks after it.

MARINA
(her thoughts)
May you be more fortunate than others!

43 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

It’s loud from the barn. The old holey buckets loud, the wooden poles move, the bottles clink.
Now at the threshold Marcus appears. There is covered with dust layer not big (30õ40 cm) picture frame at his hands. Marcus carefully inspects it, blows off dust. Gray little cloud of dust rises in air.

44 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Anna puts the fish onto the table, takes the knife at her hand and prepares to peel it off. But standing not afar marina stops her.

MARINA
Mum, let’s me.

The woman gives the knife to her daughter. Marina takes the one and peels the squama of the shining under the sun fishes. At that time Anna makes the fire in the smokehouse. Suddenly without looking in daughter Anna asks.

ANNA
Do you like him?

Marina cries out and drops the knife, brings her finger to the lips.
Anna wipes her hands on the apron.

ANNA
Show me.

Marina extends her hand to mother – from the maim blood flows with a thin jet.

45 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Johan burns the fire at the seaside, drops the branches into the fire and melts bitumen in the bucket. Marcus comes to him. Men start tarring the bottom of the old boat, the same one that rested near Marcus’ house. They work keeping silence. But now Marcus disturbs the silence.

MARCUS
Go away from here, pal. Go away from the sin…

46 – INT. IN ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Anna is alone in the house. She removes the mat in very corner of the room, pries with the knife the floorboard off and gets out from under the floor a round tin bank. Anna removes the cover, inserts her hand into the bank and extracts the pack of the banknotes and tiny silver finger ring with bloody agate. She counts money.

She sets the ring at her finger, rotates her hand, admires with the ring. Then she gets the ring out and puts it to the bank. She puts money to the floor, hides the bank to secret place. Setting the floorboard and the mat back Anna goes away. We see a spider creeps at the mat.

47 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – VERY MORNING

A red sun stands beyond the horizon. At the stems of the grasses and flowers the dew shines. In every drop of the one the morning heaven reflects. The door opens creaking and Anna goes out the threshold. She is combed and good dressed with a holyday beauty dress. Anna goes away her house.

48 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – VERY MORNING

Anna comes to Marcus’ house where already stands the horse drawn in the cart. In the cart there are the baskets full of smoked fish. Marcus stands not afar with gloomy sight, he smokes his smoking pipe. They both get to the cart.

MARCUS
(to the horse)
Go!

49 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – VERY MORNING

Awaking Marina stretches herself, smiles. The wind moves the curtain. The fly beats under the roof looking for exit.

50 – INT. IN SUMMER HOUSE – LATER

Coming into the summer house Marina stays at the threshold, looks around. Upon the nail storm-coat of Johan hangs. The girl palms it, then she takes it from the nail, put it on, looks at herself with little mirror at the wall, makes faces, shows to herself her tongue.

MARINA
Ì-ì-ì, scarecrow!

When she finally opens her eyes, we see mischievous glitter in them. Marina jumps up, cast away her dress and nude gets under the blanket. She lies at her stomach, closes her eyes and inhales from the sheet staying here virile smell.

51 – NAT. UNDER WATER – BY DAY

We are under water. We slide above the sandy bottom. The bottom is like the wrinkly skin of the giant. Here and there we see the cancers hermit, the dead fishes gnawed by the crabs, black pieces of half-putrid wood.

This is covered with alga and full with bottom sand bottle. This is the fragment of the fisher’s web. This is the object whose form we cannot understand for the covered it conches.

All these slowly move under us and disappear behind of us. Now we stop. At that place depth is one and half meter. We wait. However nothing comes. Slowly and important not big medusa swims pass. And we still wait. And now finally something comes for what we are here: into green water the coin falls. Shining with sun ray it downs with zigzags onto the sandy bottom.

52 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

In the darkness marina goes somewhere. Now she sees the lighting window. This is her house.
Carefully opening the wicket – for not scratching – marina comes to the house and looks through the window. She sees that Johan approximates to the window, looks to his reflection in the dark glass, she corrects his collar. Anna comes to Johan and palms his new shirt.  They see not standing in the darkness Marina.

53 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – LATER

Marina comes into the house.

ANNA
Where have you been so long?

The woman extend to her daughter little convolution.

ANNA
This is for you…

54 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY MORNING

Marina wakes up, but at the moment jumps up the bed and tears the paper of given yesterday convolution.  Inside of convolution Marina finds new blue dress. She gets it and rushes to the mirror. Here she turns and admires herself.

55 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – LATER

Anna takes the buckets and goes out the house. Marina looks through the window and sees going away mother. Marina takes from behind of the cupboard the key, slowly comes to the chest and opens it. She looks into the chest and gets her hands into the one. There she moves something from place to place. And now she slowly extracts something white like the snow. This is the tulle.

Marina comes to the mirror, puts the tulle at her head like it is the veil. She sits long with absolutely serious joyless face. She looks sullenly at the bride from the mirror, the bride with the blue dress under the white veil.

56 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

With wide open eyes Marina accepts the gift from Marcus. This is not big frame for the painting, with he found amid the trash in his barn.

MARINA
Wow! That’s it!

Marina extends her hands in front of her and directs the frame upon the neighbor.

MARINA

57 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

From the sand the stick sticks out. To its upper part given by Marcus frame is connected with the string. Marina looks through the frame like this is a window at Johan. Johan repairs the net. He looks for the breaks and connects them with the harsh thread. Marina comes to the net closer and looks like this is not ordinary repairing of the net but some strange rite: here, now here, and backward, one more movement else.

MARINA
Have you already designed?

JOHAN
What designed?

MARINA
A name for your boat?

JOHAN
I did not think about it.

MARINA
Do you have a knife?

JOHAN
Look in the boat.

The girl goes away, bends over the boat, finds under the sit in the poop the knife. Looking for the right place she goes around the boat. At the bow of the boat, at the left border she carves something with the knife.  Finishing, she goes away. Johan leaves the webs and comes to the boat. He downs to his knee and slides with his fingertips at the new inscription. This is the strange short word: ILY.

58 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY EVENING

Through the frame Marina looks at the sea. On the field of bloody heaven she sees her black silhouette. This is her fantasy. She sees that Johan comes to her, presses her to himself, and she downs her head to his shoulder. They both look to red sun that sits down to white of glare water.

59 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Marina comes back to home by night. She puts the stick with the frame to the wall. She sits down leaning with her back to the tree and closes her eyes...

60 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

(the memories of Marina)
Johan repairs the nets. Johan looks to Marina’s eyes.

JOHAN
Look in the boat.

61 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Marina sits with closed eyes and smiles. We see the color figures and spots of her inner vision.

AUTHOR’S VOICE
Sometimes Marina opened her eyes and then in every shadow man’s figure seemed to her. At these moments her hears froze. She was almost sure that Johan as she sleeps not at this hour and now silently will stalk to her and strong hug her, and press her to him. However there was nobody and Marina still was sitting alone, thrilling of excitement and listening hiss of the waves. And all tender words that sounded in her soul begot the tears in her eyes. And the tears flew at her cheeks silently and hot…

Suddenly Marina hears that from the summer house, from the opened window woman’s moans sound. At the girl’s face affright appears. Her eyes open wide. And now like in a dream Marina stands up and makes the step toward the sound, and one more else, and else, and else.  Marina comes toward the sound like dead. Now she comes to the summer house. Her shadow falls to white wall. Suddenly the sound stops. It gets quiet. We hear only pulsation of Marina’s heart: pow-pow… pow-pow…

62 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

Marina runs. It is the path to the sea. Under her feet coldish sand is. Further. More further.
Marina falls down, rises, runs, falls downs again, rises, runs, spits the sand out. The girl runs long without selecting way. Her feet carry her. Now she slips up and falls with her face at the sand and stays resting. She gasps. She digs the sand with her fingers.

63 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Johan files piece of iron taken from Marcus. He puts it at the step by the threshold of the house, presses it from above with his foot and files it.

ANNA
What will it be?

JOHAN
A knife will.

ANNA
What for so frightful one?

JOHAN
What for is a knife for a man? For killing.

The woman understands this joke and jokes herself – she  takes the hand of the man, leans the blade tip at her left breast and looks provoking at the man.

ANNA
Let you kill me, right now.

JOHAN
And where is Marina?

ANNA
She walks.

Johan take Anna’s hand and pull her into the house. However at this moment Anna sees the stick with the frame by the wall.

ANNA
Wait a moment.

The woman comes to the frame and attentively looks at it, touches it with her fingers’ tips.

ANNA
This is… Sakes alive!

At this moment her playing mood disappears. With the gesture she tells to the man: No, not now. She goes away to the sea and looks afar.

64 – NAT. AMID THE SEA – BY NIGHT

At the sea goes the boat. In the boat two are – Anna and Johan. The man oars.

ANNA
It’s enough.

Johan stops oaring. They sit keeping silence. They listen.

ANNA
I came here for etudes. Beauty places are here. They like want to be painted. I wanted to be a painter. I wanted to paint so beauty picture for people remember it, for hang it to museum. It’s funny. I rented the room for a song. With Marcus I did, by the way. I was walking. I was beholding sunsets. One evening our neighbor, the young fisherman, comes to us and tells that if I never have been at the sea by night, I know not the sea. And I was young, provocative and curious. Let’s go, I say. And now we are amid the sea. And the darkness is around of us. The sea is like asleep, it splashes barely. It’s nothing frightful, but… eeriness is. Do you know, he asks me in this darkness, why the ghost ships go at the seas? They call them else Flying Dutchman… Why, I say. Because there is in black depth, where light never comes, ancient like the world power. Blind. Machiavellian. It sleeps for the time being. It is fast asleep. But sometimes it wakens: either it saw some dream or something woke it up. And then the ancient creature arises to the surface… Nobody knows what it is really. Ones tell: great octopus, Leviathan. Others tell: old man the giant. Somebody tells: it is beauty youth with icy blue eyes. And if not afar a ship goes, all ship crew hurries at the deck, to illuminators and hatches for seeing something never seen… But nobody knows: the one at whom the ancient creature directs its dark eye is a goner. This is a reason why at the seas the ships go with skeletons or without crew at all… So told my fisher. And though I was not believer, my heart was freezing of admiration and eeriness. This is not Savior from the icon. This is something other. Even if you see not, you feel with every your cellule, with every reared hair the presence of ancient as the world power. And you cannot get rid of this fear. You cannot say: This is superstition. Your body knows itself: there is in sea depth something ancient, unutterable… And I was afraid so much that I pressed myself to my fisher, young, strong… That night it happened with us…

65 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Marina collects to the heap some books, hairbrush, mirror and some clothes. She ties the coverlet in a knot and goes out of house.

66 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

At the porch sit Johan and Anna. Walked pass Marina strong pushes the man with her knee.

MARINA
I hate you! It would be better if I never find you! Scum!

Saying this Marina goes to the summer house.

JOHAN
(to Anna)
Should you do that?

ANNA
Only that. She is grown already. She will get used to.

67 – NAT. IN STEPPE – BY DAY

Moving at the car Marcus listens to even hooves at the dusty way. He smokes and looks afar.

MARCUS
(his thoughts)
What is it? What is the damned life?! So many years - and no result. And now when some easy rider comes, what happens? “Well come please! I’m all yours…”

Suddenly the horse stops. Marcus looks around and sees that the sea brought to the land the pine with the roots at one side and broken twigs at another one. Marcus gets down the cart and goes to the timber. For its gravity the timber sank to wet sand. Marcus comes to. He palms at wet rough bark. He stands thinking about something. He scratches the bristle at his chin.

68 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Very soon the sun will contact the sea. Marina sits by the house. Her new dress rests by her. Looking how mother and Johan go somewhere. Waiting them go afar for a good distance, she comes into the house.

69 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – SOME LATER

At the threshold Marina stays and looks around the room trying to see what has been changed here with man’s coming. Slowly she comes to the bed. Some time she stands by the one, but now she puts her dress at the bed. She puts it and straightens.

70 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY EVENING

Johan and Anna walk at the seaside.

JOHAN
Here something strange comes with me. I kind of landed to other dimension, dimension where Chronos the god of the time devours not his children, but carefully brings them on his shoulders. And he does it like the great slightly mobile river…

Anna stops, looks at Johan, palms his hair.

ANNA
God of the time devours his children… you are crazy…

JOHAN
You are living in paradise but you understand not this. Here I feel myself… like Adam.

ANNA
Like Adam… Listen, Adam, don’t you notice something?

JOHAN
What are you talking about?

ANNA
I talk about Marina.

JOHAN
What I have to notice?

ANNA
She is in love with you.

JOHAN
What do you offer?

But Anna only shrugs.

ANNA
I don’ know.

The man takes woman’s hand and gently kisses that place where the doctors pulsing touch. When the woman suspires and closes her eyes, he attracts her to the high grass.

JOHAN
Come to me, my Eva...

71 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Sitting at the bed Anna and Marina sew up the holes at the blanket and mattress. They keep silence. Anna opens her mouth for saying something but changes her mind. When they finished to sew, the woman hugs the girl and keeps long at her embrace.

ANNA
Ah, Marina, Marina…

73 – NAT. AMID THE SEA – BY EVENING

Marcus sits inspecting water.

MARCUS
Wait…it seems the fish goes. Let’s wait a little.

Johan sits by the mast and leans with his back to the one, looks at cols setting sun.

JOHAN
Listen, Marcus, all your life you go to the sea, but have you ever seen something strange?

MARCUS
Really does something strange come in the sea? Though ones, before Marina’s birth, I found in the sea the photo. It was very old. They make not the same now. It was a boy. Like asleep…

Even wiggle of the boat, splashing waves makes Johan to sink in dreaming. Marcus at this time looks attentively into water.

MARCUS
Do it, my dear, do it.

Marcus whispers only with his lips, like he’s afraid to frighten off the fish. He looks at the seen trough water fishes. The ones go slowly and silently. Suddenly Marcus’ attention is being attracted by Johan’s muttering. Through a dream Johan utters some foreign words. This is a language of the enemy state. Marcus’ face changes. Some time he sits freezing, gazing at partner’s face. But now he extracts from under the sitting at the poop the knife and goes to sleeping Johan.
(fade out)

74 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY EVENING

(manifestation of Johan’s tale)
Opening the eyes Johan sees that he is alone at the boat. He looks around but Marcus is absent.

JOHAN
Marcus! Marcus!

Johan inspects water from one side, from another one, then from the poop. When he looks into water again, he looks Marcus under water. Marcus looks at him from under water and extends his hand. Johan downs his hand into water and tries to pull Marcus. However Marcus yanks him so strong that Johan falls to water. Marcus pulls Johan deeper and deeper. Johan screams under water. From his mouth the bubbles escape…  At this moment Johan awakes and sees that Marcus bows over him and there is the knife at his hand.

JOHAN
What are you doing?

But Marcus keeps silence, his face expresses nothing.

MARCUS
Are you afraid? Don’t sleep fishing, pal – you will miss all fish.

75 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Anna and Johan are in the bed.

ANNA
It’s horror!

Saying that woman strong leans to Johan. Behind the window we see full moon and hear singing of cicadas.

JOHAN
A long time I wish to say something for you. Something about me. I am…

Right now the woman puts her index finger at his lips kind of closing them, kind of saying: don’t tell anything.

ANNA
Hush-h-h.

The woman takes her finger away and puts to man’s mouth the stamp of her kiss.

76 – NAT. IN STEPPE – BY DAY

Amid the steppe Marcus’ horse stands without bridle. It shakes with his shiny skin. Marina comes to and extends her hand, palms the animal.

MARINA
Good, you are so good. Beauty horse...

The girl extracts from the knapsack the piece of bread. The horse “takes” bread with his lips. Marina palms horse face, looks into the great trustful eyes.

MARINA
And what about you - do you love somebody?

78 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Nude Marina rests at the cover in the shadow. With slightly closed eyes she looks at going at the sky clouds. The clouds are like drawn with white color at blue field titanic bird. We hear the strong sound of the grasshoppers. At some moment the girl falls to dreaming.

79 – NAT. AMID THE SEA – BY NIGHT

(Marina’s dream manifestation)
It is the dark sea. The waves are like dead, like the sea is dreaming. Marina looks right into black water, into the depth. She sees in the depth little fire. The fire approximates, becomes brighter and brighter. And now at the surface a hand emerges with the burning candle at the palm. The frightful horse neigh sounds.
(the end of the dream)

80 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Marina wakes up, sits and looks around. There is no one. Marina lies down at her back. She touches with her fingers her hot groin. Uplifting her hand she sees at the fingertips blood.

81 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

We hear the storming sea. The sea rumbles. In the darkness Marina sneaks from summer house to big house and sits silently right under her mother’s window. She shamlessly overhears the moans and whispers that are being sounded in the dark space of the house. These sounds hurts her, they give her so unthinkable pain that at her cheeks the tears flow.

82 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

Marina goes at the sand. She goes unevenly, stumbling.

MARINA
(her thoughts)
Why does it happen with me? Why do all men come to her? That is not honestly! Not honestly!

Marina rushes to the sea.

83 – NAT. AMID THE SEA – BY NIGHT

In absolute darkness Marina swims without looking back at her house. She remotes of the land further and further.  Here, among the waves and splashes there is nothing for eyes fixing. The darkness is so solid that almost nothing is being seen. The waves lift Marina up and cast her down.  Finally she stops swimming and puts herself onto water face up and starts waiting.

84 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY MORNING

(manifestation of Marina’s fantasy)
Marcus and Johan at the boat come to the nets. They slowly pull the net out water. Soon at the surface the first trembling fish comes.  Johan takes it and casts to the boat bottom, where already there is some water. The fish trembles trying escape from the “prison” where she gasps.

MARCUS
Oh, my God!

Johan looks where Marcus does – at the net in the dark water and sees that there is a drowned.

MARCUS
Lord, what is it!

They put Marina’s body at the bottom. Johan bends over girl’s face and she opens her eyes…
(the end of the fantasy)

85 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY NIGHT

Being covered with the great wave Marina emerges with the deep and loud sigh. She attentively looks around, sees afar the dark line of the land and swims to its direction.

86 – INT. SUMMER HOUSE – BY MORNING

Marina sits on the fresh made bed.  Her blind look is directed upon the wall. She looks around with empty look.  Her new cut with the knife dress hangs at the nail. Hard rising Marina touches the rough wall, goes around the room.

She sits down the bed again. She gets from under the pillow her copybook, opens it, pips out the sheet. The copybook falls to the floor straight away.

The ripped sheet Marina rips for two parts. Then again does. And again does. And again does. She does this until the sheet becomes ripped for a hundred fragments. Marina takes these fragments at her palm, lifts her hand up and opens her fist. The fragments rotating fall to her feet like the snow.

MARINA
(out of scene)
Yesterday you returned tired.
Hungry... Half-dead...
At your palms bloody corns were...
With disheveled head...
Under the branch fell asleep you.
In the morning – on the oars again.
Into the sea I casted the coin...
May you be lucky for…

87 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY DAY

The waves beat at the boat. In heaven seagulls cry. Johan sits static in the boat, like he waits something. Suddenly above the water Marina’s head emerges. Swimming to the boat the girl grabs the border.

MARINA
Turn away!

The man turns away and Marina climbing at the boat gets the dress to her wet body.

MARINA
Teach me to oar.

JOHAN
What for?

MARINA
Don’t ask. Just teach me.

Johan concedes the place at the oars to the girl and sits behind her and puts his palms over her ones. He shows her how she must oar.

JOHAN
Like this, do you see?

MARINA
Yeah.

Some time Marina oars inexpertly and keeping silence.

MARINA
Tell something.

JOHAN
What are you talking about?

MARINA
Well, you read so many books… so tell something… who is Chronos, for example?

JOHAN
Why do you know the name?

MARINA
Don’t you think we are very wild here? We, by the way, read the books too.

JOHAN
This is from Ancient Greek mythology.  Chronos counts every grain of sand in the horology of eternity for his is a keeper of the one. He one knows who and when made it, but he prefers to keep it in secret for while its first strike he appeared personally. Chronos gave birth to Ether or light, to Chaos or abyss and to Erebus or darkness and also fire, air and water. From his connection with Rhea the first generation of the gods appears at day light... However Chronos was afraid a prediction according to which somebody of his children, born by Rhea, will dethrone him. Every time when Rhea begot a child, Chronos devoured him. So he did Demeter,   Hades and Poseidon. Then Rhea decided to use a trick. When the time came of Zeus birth, she begot in deep cave and hid him there. And she gave to Chronos for devouring a stone. Understanding that he is fooled, Chronos started searching his neonate son at the all Earth. But certain servants of goddess obstructed him to fine the infant – when Zeus infant was crying they were beating loudly with their spear and shields. When Zeus grows up, he wins his father and forces him to disgorge all devoured children. After that Zeus casts Chronos to the underworld for ever …

MARINA
Hum, this is stupid story. Is it possible to win the time?

JOHAN
I don’t believe it too.

MARINA
And what do you believe in? What do you really believe in?

JOHAN
I believe that every day of our life might be the last. And we must live it as it is.

MARINA
Hum, I like it…

89 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Marina goes at the high pale grass. Following her, after the several steps Johan does.

AUTHOR VOICE
In her mind Marina already drew everything that will be happened later, this is why she was breathtaking. She knew that ever must not do this, but she did. Like it was not she but somebody else, somebody who invaded her body and submitted her mind and now he rules her as a rider does a horse. Religious man could say: a demon has possessed me. However Marina was not religious.

Johan attentively observes the girl like he sees her the first time. He eyes her neck, her stature, her thin legs. Marina feels that man looks at her, but she avoids looking back.

90 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Marina and Johan come to the old leaved longboat. Through the hole at the bottom Marina gets into. Johan fallows her.

91 – INT. INSIDE OF THE LONGBOAT – BY DAY

MARINA
Swear that you will tell for nobody!

JOHAN
(he ceremonially lifts his palm)
I swear.

Marina gives the photo to the man.

MARINA
This is my friend… There is some inscription, but it is outlandish…

Long and attentively Johan looks to imagine, to foreign inscription at the back side of the photo.

MARINA
Are you able to read the inscription?

JOHAN
I do.

MARINA
Well?

JOHAN
I shell tell you later.

Johan gives the photo back to Marina and she takes it away.

JOHAN
Is it why you invited me here?

They keep the silence like they expect something.

MARINA
I want to beg you something. Something important. Promise you will make it for me. All my life depends of it.

JOHAN
It is a serious statement.

MARINA
Promise!

JOHAN
I will. If I will be able.

Not knowing how to utter her pray Marina bites her lips.

MARINA
I… I want a child.

Saying this, Marina looks at the male. They sit looking to each other.

JOHAN
 (negatively nods)
No.

MARINA
Why?

JOHAN
You know on your own.

MARINA
Then hug me! Do it so tightly that I will remember for the rest of my time!

However the man sits static like he hears not this pray. But finally he extends his strong hands to the girl and hugs her and very strong presses her to him.

MARINA
Tighter! Even tighter!

Johan obeys and presses the girl with his hands like a boa.

MARINA
And what if this day is final?

92 – NAT. IN THE STEPPE – BY DAY

At the dusty road three known for us soldiers go. One has at his shoulder a rifle. All three have covered with a beard faces. They are tired of hunger and thirst. With every their step the little dusty clouds fly up the road. The men don’t look down the road but attentively inspect afar.

93 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

It is very heavy rain. Absolutely wet Marina and Johan run into the house. Dissatisfied Anna looks at them.

ANNA
(to Marina)
Change your dress and help me set the table.

94 – INT. MARINA’S ROOM – BY EVENING

Marina dries her head with a towel, gets out her wet dress, gets the dry one, comes to little mirror at the wall and long and attentively looks at her eyes.

95 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – EVENING

Anna and Marina set the table. They put the plates and cups, cut the bread.

96 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – EVENING

Johan stands at the porch. He extends his hand and catches at his palm the rain drops.

ANNA
Johan everything’s ready!

97 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Johan and Marina eat greedy, but Anna has not appetite, keeping the silence she pokes around the plate with her spoon, she looks nowhere. Anna stands up, comes to his man, puts her hand at his shoulder, she palms his hair.

ANNA
Bastard, out of my house!

Johan, without rushing and still sitting by the table, dries his face with the towel.

ANNA
(to Marina)
I never thought that my daughter will be a harlot.

For these words marina becomes pale and slowly stands up. There is emptiness in her eyes. As if in dream she goes to the door and exits from the house. Following Marina, Johan exits.  Staying alone Anna some time sits static, with all her might keeping the demons that storm in her soul, but suddenly bursts up, casts the plates from the table to the floor. The tableware breaks. The woman painfully beats to the table with her face.

ANNA
My Lord, what is it?!

98 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY EVENING

At the porch Marcus sits. He looks at grey wall of water and smokes his pipe, makes the smoke circles.

99 – NAT. BY SEASIDE – LATER

Absolutely wet Marina and Johan trail at the coast. He goes fist, she follows him some later. His storming jacket is at her shoulders.  Some time they go, but now Marina sits down right at the wet sand, presses her knees to her chest and looks at the surface of the sea. Looking back Johan sees that Marina stayed far behind and now sits at the sand. He comes back and sits by her.

JOHAN
April 2, 1904 our Arthur got lost in the forest. After two days we found him. April 7 our boy died of pneumonia in the hospital. Lord, help us!

MARINA
What does it mean?

JOHAN
This is written at the photo. He doesn’t sleep, Marina… he is dead.

100 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

It is lunar, silent night. We hear the rare drops that fall from the roof after rain. The light of kerosene lamp slightly illuminates the room. Dressed with nightgown Anna stands by the window and looks to the cold alone moon. The woman goes away the window and extinguishes the lamp. She lays down the bed over the covering. She rests static, with the opened eyes, like dead.

101 – INT. IN THE OLD LONGBOAT – BY MORNING

Awakening Marina leaves her “secret” resort and gets out to the day light.

102 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY MORNING

Johan sits at the sand with crossed legs. His chest slowly ups and downs. His eyes are half closed. Marina sits down by the man. They sit keeping the silence.

JOHAN
Go home, your mother waits you.

MARINA
Why do you think so? Have you forgotten how yesterday she …?

JOHAN
What did you wait? That she would hug you? I bet she did non close her eyes last night. Go, Marina, your place is there, with her.

MARINA
And what about you?

JOHAN
I’m still here… if you don’t mind.

MARINA
You will escape, I know.

JOHAN
Stupid girl! Where can I escape?

Marina hugs Johan and he kisses her brow.

JOHAN
That’s all, go.

Marina makes about twenty steps, turns and cries.

MARINA
But I shell bring you the food!

Without looking at her Johan lifts his hand and shows to Marina his thumb: excellent!

103 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY MORNING

Marcus groans, efforts, become red. The sweat with big drops flows at his face. Putting the rope diagonally at his chest that it dug into his skin, Marcus harnessed himself at the timber and now he pulls it somewhere. The little conches hurt his feet. His feet sinking in the sand leave deep holes which straight away are being deleted by the cargo that trails after him.

104 – NAT. NOT AFAR OF THE OLD LONGBOAT – BY MORNING

Johan walks around the longboat. He looks either to one direction or another one, he listens the silence. He listens to himself. Sometimes he turns his face to the direction of the house at seaside, like something calls him.

JOHAN
(his thoughts)
Go there! Don’t care that she cast you! Adultery… a stupid, absurd word! It happens to the man to know one more woman… what for to transform this into the tragedy? No, it’s too early, wait for three days. Let her cool. Let her understand this is not terrible. This is the low of the nature. This always was and always will be… just wait.

The man sits down the hot sand and crosses his legs, and breathes deeply.

105 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Anna crochets something. Three soldiers enter the house. Seeing the “gests” Anna stands up but hears a command.

MAN #1
Sitz!
The title: Sit down!

MARINA
Who are they, mum? What do they want?

But they roughly grab her and put at the chair.

MAN #1
Sitz!
The title: Sit!

Marina tries to jump through the open window, but they grad her and cast to the corner of the room.

MAN # 2
Bleib hier!
The title: Stay here!

Eating all food, the soldier well-fed eructate. Then they extract the cigarettes, burns the matches, smoke, exhale from their mouths the streams of smoke. They greedy inspect Anna, her ankles, her breasts, slim arms, shoulders, nude neck. In the air there is dangerous expectation. Finishing smoking, the leader extinguishes cigarette end with the sole of the boot, rise from behind the table, opens the door of the stove and cast the cigarette end there. Then he comes to Anna, bends over her, inhales her smell and palms her nude shoulders.

MAN
Aufstehen!

The title: Stand up!

Holding breath of the fear Anna stands up. The man goes around her and rips off the shoulder straps of her dress. He looks greedy at her white nude breasts and sticks to them with his mouth.

MARINA
No!

Marina rushes to helping her mother, but the men pull her away with her hair, cast her at the floor and press her over with heavy man body and try to move apart her femurs.

ANNA
Don’t touch my daughter, beasts, take me!

Right now, then the “gests” direct all their attention to the women, Johan appears. He silently enters the house, rushes at the man who stands with his back to the door and keeps the rifle at his hands. Johan stabs his knife to the right side of the man and fast rotates it. At straight away he grabs from the falling man the rifle and directs it to the violators. At this moment everything sinks to the darkness like somebody turns off the light. We see not anything. We only hear. And we hear that from the silence gradually, very slowly the echoing pulses of man’s heart appear.

Pow-pow... Pow-pow... Whose this heart is? – ask we.

One. Two. We wait.
Three. Four. Inside of us everything compresses.
Five. Six. We wait the necessary outcome of this collision.
Seven. Eight. A shot sounds.

106 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

With sweat at his face Marcus works. He saws, rasps, works with the jointer, hammers the iron clips. Now he starts to dig narrow but deep hole.

107 – NAT. AT STEPPE – BY DAY

A wheel creaks. The sand under the wheel creaks too. A horse hoof beats the dusty road. There are four in the car. One is coupled. Two are dead. And one keeps the rifle at his hands. This is Johan. He looks to heaven.

JOHAN
(his thoughts)
Heaven today is so frightful, bottomless and blue. Only under such heaven we must die.

108 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Anna and Marina hug and strong impress themselves to each other.

MARINA
Mama, mummy, forgive me for God’s sake! I swear that I shell not even think about him!

ANNA
Hush-sh-sh, silence! That’s all, I don’t want even to hear about it. There was nothing, you see? There was nothing between you and him. All this is your fantasy. Deal? Fine fellow!
(Fade out)

109 - INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – LATER

ANNA
I saw the strange dream. Our houses, ours and Marcus’ one stand nearby and they are very high, like the tree. I stand at the roof and see that between the branches of our tree there are two horses. They rest at the thick branches and move with their legs. Suddenly one of them jumps right to my roof. Where are you!? – I scream to it – you will fall! – the roof is diagonal. The horse tries to keep equilibrium, it moves with its legs, it beats with its hoofs but it slides down the roof. And I hear the echoing hit – the horse fell to the ground. I look down and see that it rests at its back has convulsions. Its legs switch. Blood flows from its naris. Then it switched one more time and froze. It died. But I cannot stop looking at this picture. Suddenly I hear the crash again. This is another horse following the first jumped from the tree to the roof. It tried to keep equilibrium too. But it felt too. And it died. And now I lay at the roof margin and look at two dead horses. And cry. And such pain in my heart is …

110 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Anna and Marina see at the road the car, horse and Johan. Everything is covered with road dust. The man, his face, hair and clothes are almost white of dust.

111 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY EVENING

Johan drives the car to Marcus’ house. He gets horse out the car, ties it behind the house. The horse neighs.

112 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Johan comes to the house. The women bring him two jugs. At Anna’s shoulders is a towel.

ANNA
Wash up after the way.

Anna casts water to man’s palms and head. Johan dries his hands and face with clean towel. Marina gives him the jug too.

MARINA
Drink milk, it is cool, from underground.

Johan takes the jug, he wants to bring it to his mouth but for the tiredness drops it. The fragments fly to different sides. White milk flows at the grey dust. Marina looks at milk and her eyes become wet of tears. Marina becomes sobbing. The tears flow at her cheeks. And now hard weeping shakes the girl’s shoulders. Johan clutches her to him. Straight away Anna connects to them. And now the three press each other embracing.

113 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY EVENING

Heavy red sun contacts water. At the seaside a large, as two men height, cross. Under the cross leaning with his back, Marcus sits. He looks at dying sun.

114 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

With a wet sponge Anna washes Johan’s shoulders, chest and arms. She puts his feet in basin with hot water. She washes the ones and dries with her hair. Then she puts the man to the bed, extinguishes the lamp and downs nearby. Johan lies with wide opened eyes, absolute static.

JOHAN
It happened.

Resting some time else Johan turns and piles on the woman. She resists but he rough, as a beast takes her.

115 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY MORNING

Johan is sleeping. Marina tiptoe comes to the mirror, looks gloomy at her reflection. She comes to commode, opens and closes the boxes, searching something. Finally she finds the scissors and clinks it.

116 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

At the coast Marina sits down the sand, puts the scissors in front of her and looks in the sea. The sea is blue. There are white glitters on the waves. With her left hand the girl pulls away a strand of hair, and with her right hand she cuts it at the root. Then one more else does, and else, and else.

MARINA
Nothing was. Nothing is. Nothing is possible… Nothing was. Nothing is. Nothing is possible…  Nothing was. Nothing is. Nothing is possible…

The sea is rustling. The scissors clinks at thin hands of Marina. The bunch of hair becomes higher and higher.

117 – INT. SUMMER HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Anna comes in summer house and sees dreaming Marina. Anna palms the cut hair, barely visible nods. Then she carefully takes away from under Marina’s head a book and puts the soft pillow. Marina moves and mumbles through sleep.

MARINA
Thank you, mummy.

118 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

JOHAN
It happened

ANNA
What do you say?
(Fade out)

The title: “The third part: Wait”

119 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EARLY MORNING

Johan wakes up. He rests long looking at the roof. Then he turns his head and looks at sleeping nearby Anna.

120 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – SOME LATER

Getting dressed Johan comes to the bed and look again onto sleeping Anna like trying to see something that he still could not see.

121 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – LATER

In the barn Johan takes the net and oars.

122 – NAT. SEASIDE – LATER

At the seaside Johan turns over the bottomed up boat. With the rolls he pulls it to water. When he sets the oars to the oarlocks he hears a scream behind his back.

ANNA
Johan!

Turning back he sees Anna, she keeps at her hands a flask with water. Anna comes to the man and gives him the flask.

ANNA
How… without water?

The man takes the flask and the woman embraces him and strong presses herself into his chest, like she doesn’t want to absolve him. Johan jumps into the boat, takes the oars and strong beats at the waves. Woman stands static and looks at him. When Johan goes from the shore for a good distance, Anna hysterically screams.

ANNA
Johan!

Hearing this scream Johan stands up, turns back and lifts his hand up.

123 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Siting before the house Anna and Marina wash the apples, cut them with knives. They put slices into the big pot. They work keeping silence, without want. Their silence is onerous and confused. They look down like there is taboo for looking to each other.

MARINA
Tell, mam, when father went in the sea did you wait him in the same way?

Anna slightly nods: Yes, I did.

MARINA
I don’t want this. I don’t want…

124 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY DAY

Waves even splash behind the border, deflated sail slightly claps of the wind. Directing his face to the sun Johan rests at the bottom of the boat. He does long and static. Suddenly becomes silently. The waves stop beating at the border. Slightly clapping sail becomes silent. This sudden silence worries the man. He stands up and looks around. He long and attentively inspects horizon – there is a dark line of storm front afar.

Johan turns back and looks to the seaside where the house and two women in the house stayed. He stands static. But now he nods kind of saying to himself: Yes. After that he looks to the dark heaven onward. Dark clouds fast approximate. The line of the black sky becomes more and more distinct.   Finally Johan sits down at the oars and, oaring against begun wind, moves to the storm front.

125 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

In the darkness, the sea is storming. We hear the wind rages behind the window, making the beats at the glasses. Anna starts knitting. Marina stands by the window looking into the darkness. She rotates at her hands a concha and cannot find the place for herself. Now she comes to the bed and lies down. But she cannot rest, and strait away she jumps up and leaves the house.

126 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

The wind pushes Marina as strong that any moment she might fall at the ground.

127 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – SOME LATER

Marina comes back home.

MARINA
I can not take it anymore, mama, my heart hurts.

Mother answers not. Suspiring the woman stands up, takes from the buffet a bottle with cloudy liquid and fills two glasses a quarter. Marina looks to her mother with admiration and distrust.

ANNA
For the ones who are in the sea.

Saying that woman drinks the potion. Marina comes to the table and drinks too with one slip. She even grimaces not like inside of her everything became insensible. She just breaks a tine piece of bread and snuffs it. After that Marina lays down the bed and curls up. Anna casts liquid else and drinks. She comes to her daughter and palms her head. But now she lies down nearby and strong presses Marina to her.

MARINA
Mamma…

ANNA
What, honey?

MARINA
I don’t know how to say…

ANNA
Don’t be afraid, say as it is.

Marina takes mother’s palm and puts it to her abdomen: here… And mother in a flash understands everything end hugs the daughter to her stronger. And they rest this way – hugging each other. Their looks are directed in emptiness.

128 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

The sea became silent. It is silence and darkness. Anna sits by the table, warming her palms with the candle fire.

ANNA
It is so silent. It’s so strange if the sea becomes absolutely calm. It even slightly frightens. The silence around us and the sea stays so mute. The great mute darkness… it is such like the light will never again…

Marina comes to mother and puts the palm at her shoulder.

ANNA
Take my hand.

Marina takes mother’s hand.

ANNA
Yes, it is better.

The woman presses her cheek to girl’s palm. Marina palms mother at her head.

129 – NAT. IN STEPPE – BY EVENING

By sunset Marcus, Anna and Marina drive somewhere at the car. Looking the great made by Marcus cross woman cannot look away.

ANNA
Is it your work?

MARCUS
It is.

130 – NAT. SEASIDE – LATER

Marcus drives big nail in vertical column of the cross… Already in the darkness the man ignites the match. Fire illuminates his face. Covering the flame with his palms, for the one not be extinct, Marcus brings the match to his pipe and ignites tobacco. Marina takes the matches from Marcus, ignites the lamp, lifts the lamp up and hangs it to the nail. The yellow fire aspires to the darkness.

131 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

A long time Marina looks at Johan’s shirt that a several days hangs at the chair back. Then she looks through the window. Behind the window there is a Lilac bush, it closes with its branches the sea. The girl goes out the house.

132 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

In the barn Marina takes the ax. She cuts the bush down. Anna looks this but tells nothing.

133 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

Marina comes in Marcus’ house.

MARINA
Tell me about the cross, uncle Marcus. I know you are not a believer, you have not even an icon in your home, but you make the cross… tell me why…

MARCUS
Well, if you have talked about it… look here...

Marcus tears from the bread a little peace and starts pressing it.

MARCUS
And now let’s wet it with sputum… and press little more. So… and so. And now we have such thing.

MARINA
Hum, is this a trick!

MARCUS
Do you know what will happen if we make a hole in the boat, then gloss it over with the mass and then we go at this boat in the sea?

Marina nods: no, I don’t.

MARCUS
Of cause you don’t, how you can? And will be so: first water will soft this mass and then wash it out from the hole. And the one who came in the sea afar already not be back…

MARINA
I cannot understand, uncle Marcus, what do you hint? However you make a hole at Johan’s boat, did you?

MARCUS
Don’t guess.

MARINA
Don’t guess? Then I understand nothing.

MARCUS
Demon obsessed me then. I was young, stupid and greedy. I did not know, I swear to God, that she was waiting a child…

Some time Marina tries to understand, but now suspiring she closes her mouth with her palm for not screaming.

MARINA
Ah!

MARCUS
Yes, in deed “ah”.

134 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Marina goes fast. Her lips are tight. Her face is angry. There is the photo at her hand – “dreamy boy”. She approximates to water, takes the photo for the angle and cast it afar the land. The photo comes into water. Straight away we hear a far thunder.

135 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

Marina goes somewhere. There is a stick with the picture frame at her shoulder. Now she comes to neighbor’s house, swings and beats the frame in the porch. The frame breaks for the fragments. From the house Marcus exits. He sees going away Marina. And he sees his gift, and now it is unrecoverable.

136 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Marina stands by the window and looks afar.

AUTHOR’S VOICE
With Johan’s disappearing Marina’s life has transformed to emptiness. Life stayed but had not content. Become empty life lost its weight and now Marina would not wonder if the flatus takes her away. Sometimes it seemed to her that just this she wants. The one that connected her with life was a tiny peace of the flesh that she had under her heart.

Marina puts her hands at her slightly protuberant belly.

MARINA
I’ll call him… Johan.

Her mother answers not for these words, but just slightly nods kind of saying: God is merciful.

137 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

It starts to get dark. Marina cast to little bottle some kerosene. Anna is immersed in knitting. Marina takes the matches, gets her coat and goes out. Some time more the woman knits, but now she puts knitting away and looking to us speaks.

ANNA
Whose pain is hardest? Pain of the woman lost a husband or pain of the woman lost a father of her future child, even if he is not her husband but just… absolute occasion. Lost even without understanding what is it – to live with a man?

138 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY MORNING

Marina rests on the bed. She sleeps not and hears her mother’s voice.

ANNA
Marina, look!

Leaving the bed girl comes to mother and looks through the window. Behind the window snow is. Marina stands by mother and.

MARINA
What do you think – is he alive?

ANNA
I don’t know…

MARINA
And what does your heart say?

ANNA
Heart… from the beginning my heart was breaking of melancholy. But now it is like a stone. And if the stones might cry, then my heart does too – with the mute stony scream.

139 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

It is winter. Amid icy silence the house is. This is Marcus’ house. From the chimney in gray heaven smoke rises.

140 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

Marcus puts into the bake the firewood. The door opens. Into the house comes in covered with snow Marina. She sits down the stool and hard breathes.

MARINA
Why did you tell me about the breadcrumb? I did not know and it was good… I loved you… but now I do not… Why did you tell me?

MARCUS
I am tired. I am tired to carry this load. I told you and now it became some easier. Very soon I’ll dare to tell your mother. I know she will hate me, but it will be easier for my heart.

Going away, already at the threshold, Marina tells without turning.

MARINA
Do you know what you did? You made a sacrifice.

MARCUS
What are you talking about? What sacrifice? To whom?

MARINA
You know yourself to whom...

141 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Marina goes to the hill top through the snow and the wind. At the top she extends her hand and opens her fist. Caught by the wind, a piece of paper flies away. We see the black, winter, angry, seething sea.

MARINA’S VOICE
(out of scene)
Write me a letter, darling.
Little and simple one…
Seagulls fly beside me  –
In air your face is drawn.

There is in my heart a hollow…
There is in my heart a hole.
My weeny triangle message
I give to the breezes cold.

Winter already is here.
Where are you? What country? What town?
Snowflakes like tiny epistles
Fall from the heaven down.

Title: “Part four: Insanity”

142 – NAT. IN STEPPE – BY DAY

It is spring. In steppe the birds sing.

143 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Marina sits at the chair in her room. Blouse at her abdomen is tense like the skin at the drum. Marina takes the pen, submerges it into ink, lifts the hem of woolen skirt and at inner side of the femur writes something. Looking at this inscription from different aspects, she adds a couple of letters else. Suddenly she hears her mother’s voice. It is very nearby, behind the window. The girl hides the inscription at her femur with the hem.

ANNA
Marina!

Almost straight away Anna inspects into the room.

ANNA
Marcus drove to Red Steading. Aunt Simone and uncle Peter invite us to visit. Tomorrow morning we shell go to them.

MARINA
I won’t go.

ANNA
Why?

MARINA
Not go and that’s it!

144 – NAT. BY OLD BARGE – BY DAY

Marina goes at high dry grass. Now she comes to the barge and through the hole enters inside…

145 – INT. INSIDE THE BARGE – BY DAY

Marina sits in twilight, looks around, sniffs smell of dry once tarred wood, smell of dereliction and oblivion. Before her, Johan sits.

(Marina’s memory)
MARINA
Hug me. Stronger. More stronger.

Johan hugs the girl.

MARINA
And what if this day is very final?

Johan puts the girl at the sand. He compresses her stronger and stronger, and covers her face with the kisses.

JOHAN
I love you. I love. Love. Love. Love…

MARINA
You love me? And what about mum? Don’t you really love her?

JOHAN
I do, but absolutely another way. Not such as you.

And he moves apart girl’s femurs and penetrates into her. And she, mad of the pain, for not crying, bites his shoulder. We look at the barge from out side. We hear the noise of the sea, whisper of the grass upon the wind. And somewhere in dark interior of the barge we hear the scream.

146 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY MORNING

By morning Marina long rested at the bed.

MARINA
(her thoughts)
I am broken like a crystal cup. I ignite a lamp, but deep down I know you need not it. Then what for I do this?

Marina sits up and hangs her legs from the bed. She directs her look to the point at the white wall. Finally she cast away the blanket and rises. She goes to the kitchen and washes her face. She shivers and puts at her shoulders the shawl.

147 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY MORNING

Going out of house Marina sees that Marcus and her mother approximate to the house at the car with the horse. Anna sees Marina and swings with her hand. Marina lifts her hand and swings too.

AUTHOR’S VOICE
When Marina was looking following her mother, suddenly her heart sank and ached. Her heart aches like it wants to escape from the chest and fly away following her mother. And this dull aching pain becomes so intolerable that Marina screams with all her might.

MARINA
Mama! Wait! I want go with you!

148 – NAT. IN STEPPE – BY DAY

The way is long, tedious and dreary. Anna, Marcus and Marina shakes in the car. They keep the silence.

ANNA
Marina, already eight months have passed, but you still smile not. Inside of me is emptyness too, but we have to find the strength to live on – life is go on.

Some time Marina keeps the silence, but now answers.

MARINA
Just he took them with him.

ANNA
Whom them?

MARINA
My smiles.

The long silent way is again. But suddenly Marina screams.

MARINA
What is there, uncle Marcus? Mama, what is there?

ANNA
Where?

MARINA
Yonder!

Marcus stops the horse. Marina hard gets to the ground and goes somewhere.

ANNA
Where does she go?

MARCUS
I do not know?

Retiring from the car for twenty-thirty steps, Marina stops. She stands like a column and looks at something. Anna leaving the car, goes to her daughter, Marcus follows her. By the low willow, from the sand, gun-butt up, bayonet down the rifle sticks. From the sand sticks military boot.

MARINA
Here they are...

ANNA
It is bad sign.

Marcus extracts the rifle from the sand, carefully cleans the bayonet with the sand and carries the rifle to the car.

ANNA
Leave it here. This dirt we shell not bring with us…

149 – NAT. BY KINSFOLK’S HOUSE – BY DAY

Anna and Marcus help to Marina get from the car to the dusty ground. They stay, do gymnastics and look at the house – when kinfolk will meet them.  Soon the door is being opened and from the house Marina’s aunt, Simone goes out.

AUNT
Finally! We already thought you will not come.

Strait away her husband comes, uncle Peter. Peter and Marcus shake the hands to each other and embrace.

AUNT
Well come, dear gests!

150 – INT. IN THE HOUSE – BY DAY

The women prepare the table. They put milk and cheese, fresh bread, chicken and potatoes. Here is a decanter with hooch. Aunt puts at the table sugared apples.

AUNT
(looking at Marina’s belly)
This is for you, Marina.

AUNT
(to Anna)
Is it soon?

ANNA
Yes, it is.

AUNT
Well, God forbid.

151 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

Marina goes at the seaside, but now sits down the sand. But straight away stands up and rubs her buttocks.

MARINA
So cold!

Marina goes at the seaside and sees the remains of the boat. The boat is kind of broken for two parts, only its bow sticks from the sand. Marina comes to the bow and leans on it with her buttocks. She looks at the sea, at the black waves, at white spume. She inspects horizon – is there a boat afar? But the sea is empty – nothing but waves. Marina lifts the hem of her warm skirt and looks at inner part of her femur. There is inscription:

L
You

152 – INT. KINFOLK’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Marina ignites the lamp, sits by the table and writes something in her copybook. Sometimes she stops and listens dark silence of the house. She hears that somebody coughs dreaming. Somewhere a bed creaks. Opening the window she puts her face to cold fresh air.

MARINA
 (behind the scene)
Kiss the knee – remember thee.
I kiss your knee.
Kiss the chest – give the rest.
I kiss your chest.
Kiss the brow – where are you know.
I kiss your brow.
Kiss the eyes – harden ties.
I kiss your eyes.

153 – NAT. SEASIDE - BY TWILIGHT

(Marina’s dream)
Marina stands with her back to the sea. Suddenly she hears the splash behind her back, like a man goes out water. She hears the steps at water. She is afraid. Her body becomes like from the wood. She stands static. We hear that somebody approximates to Marina. He splashes at water. His shadow moves at the sand. Girl’s heart bits like mad. But Marina still stands. Now somebody’s hand extends to her shoulder… any moment it will down and grab the girl… Marina closes her eyes with all her might. And now the hand downs at her shoulder. At this moment Marina wakes up with cold sweat at her front.

154 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

With burning lamp at her hand Marina goes to the place where the deformed by tempest boat sticks from the sand. She swings it from side to side for extracting it from the sand, but the boat rests too deep in the sand.

Marina finds at the seaside a thick branch and using it digs out the cold sand.  And now it is done. Marina extracts remains of the boat from the sand. She inspects the left board, cleans out the sand and sees the sign. At the board there are three letters: ILY.

Marina takes the lamp and goes away. She goes hard. She hard moves her thin legs. She swayed, drops the lamp and falls at the cold sand. Here she stays and rests static. From the upset lamp kerosene flows. The wick inside of the lamp flares up. From this flame the glass of the lamp cracks.

155 – NAT. STEPPE – BY DAY

It is a way home. Marina rests at the car, covered with sheepskin coat.

AUTHOR’S VOICE
On the way home Marina is tormented by fever. Most of all she wanted faster come to her room, light the stove, feel smoke smell that insensibly propagates at the corners, and then open the stove door and put her face to going from the firebox heat.

We see morbid face of Marina.

MARINA’S THOUGHTS
It is cold. Cold. Very cold…

156 – NAT. BY THE GRAVE – BY DAY

Marcus stops the horse no far from terrible place where all they found the “grave”. Marcus takes the rifle and hides it in the car under hay. Looking Anna’s eye he excuses himself.

MARCUS
I shell not cast it! It is war – anything can happen…

157 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Marina rests at her bed. She has fever. Anna takes at her palms the hot one of daughter and leans to her cheek kind of trying to pass to Marina a part of her health. Bending over marina Anna wipes sweat from hot brow. Anna lifts Marina’s head and brings the cup to dry cracked lips.

ANNA
Drink.

Marina opens her eyes and sees everything blurred and unfocused. She difficult drinks and again falls to the darkness. And the darkness embraces her from all sides and swings her and noises. Marina whispers in delirium.

MARINA
The filament is broken, mamma… The filament is broken…

158 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

It is night, thunder. Strong rain beats at the window glass. Of the lightning flashes the black window time after time becomes white. Opening her eyes Marina sees sleeping mother: she sits on the stool, dropping her head at Marina’s bed. Marina looks through the window - the lightning flash illuminates man’s silhouette. The girl sits at her bed, hangs her feet, stands up. She goes swinging of weakness like the drunk. She pushes the door, passes the threshold and comes into “water wall”.

159 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Of the wind impulse the open door knocked. Anna wakes up and sees that Marina is absent. She goes out of house and not afar sees Marina: the girl goes extending her hand forward like she wans to hug somebody.

ANNA
Marina!

The woman runs to Marina, grabs her and pulls to the house. Marina resists and extends her thin weak hands into emptiness.

MARINA
There is Johan, mamma. There is… there…

160 – NAT. FOREST – BY NIGHT

Marina opens her eyes and sees the blurred white spot on the black field. The spot jumps from side to side, disappears and appears again. This is the moon that blinks between the branches.
Somebody carries Marina per the wood at his hands. Marina turns her head and sees Johan’s face. Under the moon light his face seems pale, almost white.

MARINA
(barely audible)
Your sweater is wet…

After that Marina closes her eyes, and falls to the blackness again.

161 – NAT. BY ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

We see Anna’s house. There is a weak light in the window.

AUTHOR’S VOICE
Three days and nights Anna and Marcus fought for Marina’s life. They sited by her bed by rotation, watered her, put the cold rag onto her hot brow, keep her hand and hear her fever delirium. And on the fourth day…

162 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY MORNING

Anna comes to Marcus who sits by Marina’s bed and wakes hum.

ANNA
Go home, rest.

Marcus stands up and goes away. Anna sits down by Marina and touches with her lips Marina’s brow. Of this touch Marina wakes up and looks at her mother.

ANNÀ
What are you doing, Marina! Marcus and I are deadly afraid. How are you?

MARINA
(turning away)
I shell not ignite the light house anymore – he will not back…

163 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

Siting by the table Marcus repairs his boot. Suddenly the door opens with creak and Marina enters.

MARCUS
(pointing at the boot)
It is torn again. It’s disorder.

Marina sits down by him and looks that he artfully uses the bodkin and filament.

MARINA
Drive me there, uncle Marcus.

MARCUS
Where?

MARINA
To that grave.

MARCUS
My God, Marina! What for? Are you crazy?!

 MARINA
I very beg you, uncle Marcus. If you will not do, I shell go on my own…

164 – NAT. IN STEPPE – BY DAY

Sitting upon the car Marina looks at the sea that appears and disappears behind the hills and bush. Marina’s eyes are extinct like inside of her there is powerless, tired of life old woman. She indifferently follows with her eye standing by the way Johan (this is either her fantasy or hallucination).

165 – NAT. BY THE GRAVE – BY DAY

They came and stopped. A long time marina sits immobile at the car. Finally she gets down. Marcus helps her.

MARINA
Go, uncle Marcus.

MARCUS
What?

MARINA
I say: go, leave me alone.

MARCUS
You are really crazy! No way!

But Marina keeps her look upon Marcus. Marcus wants to protest but he sees in her eyes such perseverance that just moans and fulfills her request.

MARCUS
Drive for you?

MARINA
I’ll come on my own, it is not first time.

MARCUS
(to the horse)
Go!

Marina stands looking after Marcus.

166 – NAT. BY THE GRAVE – BY DAY

Marina very slowly goes to the grave.

AUTHOR’S VOICE
Like a magnet something pulled marina to the grave of terrible men, and why she couldn’t say. And she obeyed to this unclear scaring attraction. With a great inner force she moved her feet because there was at this place some invisible block, the wall of thirty steps width. Exactly in this invisible wall Marina holding her breath entered. Her heart beat often, her palms were wet of sweat but she anyway entered.

Marina comes to the grave. She stands. She goes the grave around. She looks at sticking from the sand boot.

MARINA’S THOUGHTS
It’s interesting how do they rest? Arms out-stretched? Embracing? How do they rest there, under the sand layer?

Marina downs at her knees and starts by her handfuls drop the sand away. She does it until from the sand the blackened hand with crooked fingers appears. And now from the sand right to heaven the face of one three men looks. It looks with empty eye sockets. It is frightful. It has deadly grin instead of the mouth and the hole instead of the nose. Some time Marina like fascinated looks at this awful “face”, but now she starts to breath strange and closes her eyes. And now she vomited right upon the dead “face”.

167 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY DAY

We hear that in the stove the fire wood cracks. We see Anna’s eyes, they are closed. The woman smiles for something. What for she does? We see! Standing at her knees she leans with her ear to Marina’s stomach.

ANNA
I hear him, I hear… ah, Marina, I would like to be at your position very much…

At this time marina looks through the window.

(Marina’s vision)
Not very far of the house, Johan stands.

MARINA
It’s a bad idea, mama…

168 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY DAY

MARINA
Uncle Marcus, set me that music again... where the nymph laments.

Marcus sets upon the disc of the gramophone the vinyl, rotates the handle of actuating, sets down the gramophone foot. From the trumpet the sounds and singing flow...

Amor", dicea, il ciel
mirando, il pi; ferm;,
"Dove, dov'; la f;
che'l traditor giur;?"
Miserella, ah pi; no, no,
tanto gel soffrir non pu;.
"Fa che ritorni il mio
amor com'ei pur fu,
o tu m'ancidi, ch'io
non mi tormenti pi;.

When music is finished marina some time more sits static, but now she comes to the window. Looking through the one she says.

MARINA
I know what does it mean - loving without answer, what does it mean to want something most of all and accept not this… Now I know. I know how man goes crazy for it. From the outside you look as a normal man, but in deed you are hopelessly ill. You lose your mind and stop understanding you do, you act.

Marina comes to Marcus and kisses him upon his brow.

MARINA
I forgive you, uncle Marcus.

Saying that Marina exits and Marcus stays sitting static, he looks into emptiness.

169 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY EVENING

Anna twists the wool for sale. Marina sits by the table, looking into the dark corner. There leaning with his back to the wall Johan stands. Anna secretly looks at Marina, studies her. Finally she comes to the girl and takes her hand.

ANNA
What is wrong with you, Marina? I do not recognize you. Is that you?

But Marina answers not. Instead of the answer she looks sullenly at keeping the silence mother. For this look the woman becomes uncomfortable.

MARINA
I see him…

ANNA
Whom him?

MARINA
Him, mamma… him.

ANNA
And now, do you?

Marina slightly nods: I do.

ANNA
And what he does?

MARINA
Nothing does. Just stands.

The woman with apprehension and disbelief turns her head and looks into the dark corner, but she sees nobody. Anna goes away but very soon backs with an icon at her hands.

ANNA
Pray, marina. It will not harm to you.

The woman kisses Marina upon her brow, gives her the icon and leaves the house. Marina looks at the icon and goes to her bed. Here she puts the one by the pillow, downs at her knees and some time looks at the one. But now she puts the one down the image.

MARINA
Pray yourself.

170 – INT. MARINA’S ROOM – BY NIGHT

MARINA
It’s enough for me!

The girl leaves the bed, takes the warm blanket, puts it instead of her and covers it with enother blanket. She does this for it seems from afar that this is she lays and dreams at the bed. Marina sneaks at tip toys through the house, passing dreaming Anna. The girl carefully selects the place at the cracking floor – for not cracking. At the kitchen she takes the knife, lamp and matches, and leaves the house.

171 – NAT. BY MARCUS’ HOUSE – LATER

The window of Marcus’ house lightens. By the house Marina takes leaned to the wall oars and silently goes away.

172 – NAT. THE SEASIDE – LATER

With loud moans, groaning, using the oar as a lever, Marina slow moves the boat to water. And now the boat swings at the dark waves. Marina ignites the lamp and puts it at the sand. She gets into the boat, set the oars to the oarlocks and inexpertly but violently starts oaring to the sea darkness.

173 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY NIGHT

The light of the lamp at the seaside is slightly visible. Marina looks around – it is twilight around of her.

MARINA
Hey you! I know you are here! Listen to me, listen!

Screaming this Marina with all her might inspects the blackness that surrounds her. It is dark, but the light of visible through the cloud moon is enough for seeing something if it appears above the water surface. And it really appears.  Thirty steps afar the boat something like a head, appears. However Marina cannot identify its face for the shadow of moonlight is on the face. Marina takes the knife at her hand. There is anger and vigor at her face.

MARINA
Don’t dare come to me anymore! Do you hear? Don’t dare come to me anymore!  You will not get anything!

Screaming this Marina trice crisscross cuts air with the knife in direction of the “head”. The “head” quietly hides under water. Some time Marina stands with the knife at her hand, but now she sighs, drops the one and clasps her stomach with her hands.

MARINA
No, no, no, no, no! Not now! Only not now!

Breathing hard Marina downs at her knees at the boat bottom. She digs with her fingers at the wooden sit.

MARINA
Mommy, mommy, mommy… you told that after two weeks…

Setting herself on the bottom at all four Marina moves apart her femurs and starts deep breathing.

MARINA
Help me, Mom! Help!

The sweat flows at her face and she lick it from her lips. For keeping the scream Marina with all her might compresses with her teeth the textile of the dress at her shoulder. Her thin fingers bite the wooden sit so strong that her nails become white.

With every flash of pain she bites the wood with her nail stronger and stronger, and finally her nails break. The sweat flowing at her face blinds her. Everything around her – the sea, waves, clouds, moon – all these becomes red for the pain. Sometimes through her teeth against her will the scream escapes. It continues very long. The veins at her hands inflate like the ropes. And at the same time on the bow of the boat Johan sits. This is either her fantasy or hallucination.

MARINA
Don’t look at me! I’m not beauty now.

And the ghost obediently turns away.

174 – INT. ANNA’S HOUSE – BY NIGHT

At midnight Anna wakes up. She long rotates from side to side. She sighs. Finally she stands up, puts the shawl at her shoulders and looks into Marina’s room.
ANNA
(whispering)
Marina!

But no one answered her.

ANNA
Sleeps…

175 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

Anna comes to the seaside and looks into the sea darkness. Easy night breeze blows at her. She rubs with her palm the ribs under the left breast. There are the signs of the pain at her face.

ANNA
What is it! In the middle of the night…

176 – INT. MARCUS’ HOUSE – BY NIGHT

Sitting by the table Marcus drinks the hooch. He sits with the wry of alcohol face at the stool. He slightly swings forward and backward. He casts a half of the glass again and cast it into him. He hides his face with his palms.

MARCUS
Crud! Crud…

He looks at the mirror and strong casts the glass at the mirror. The mirror breaks. Marcus leaves the house and slams the door loudly. From this crash the vinyl at the gramophone disc starts rotating, the “hand” downs itself. And now, when Marcus rides at his horse into the night, from the gramophone trumpet flows the sad song:

Amor", dicea, il ciel
mirando, il pi; ferm;,
"dove, dov'; la f;
che'l traditor giur;?"

177 – NAT. BY THE CROSS AT SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

At seaside Marcus collects firewood and cast it to the heap by the cross. Then he ignites the heap. The cross burns in the darkness like the man who spreads his arms to the sides.

178 – NAT. IN THE SEA – BY NIGHT

A child screamed. Marina takes him at her hands and presses him to her. She looks at his tiny face and with her palm washes it of blood and phlegm. Directing her blind look into the darkness she swings slightly from side to side like she lulls the child. But now she downs weak at the bottom and clutches the child to her.

Her eyes close and she straight away falls into absolute blackness and silence. It is night. At the black waves the boat swings. In the boat the child and his mother are.

179 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY DAY

(Marina’s memory)
Marina is five. She stands knee-deep in water. The waves swing her from side to side. Little deeper, five steps afar, Anna stands. She extends her hands to Marina.

ANNA
Marina, come here. Don’t be afraid, silly, I am here.

Marina extends her tiny hands to mother and makes a step.

ANNA
Well done! Atta girl! And else! Do it, be brave!

Marina does one step more.

ANNA
Clever!

The woman slightly approximates to Marina and between their fingers not more than inch stays.

ANNA
A little bit more... smart girl! Clever! And some closer...

When water comes to Marina’s chest, their fingers contact. The woman strong presses at her palms the daughter’s ones and pulls Marina to her.

ANNA
Come to mummy.

180 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY NIGHT

The fire that Marina ignited not long ago begins thrilling. It flares. The fire agonizes. Finally flaring very brightly it extinguishes. Begins absolute darkness.

181 – NAT. SEASIDE – BY MORNING

The sun rises. At the even morning waves the boat swings. It is by very land. The oar at the oarlocks move will-less. The bottom of the boat is red of blood. At the bottom at left side Marina rests. Her white shirt is ragged at the chest part, and under the belt is bloody. The girl’s eyes are closed, her eyelids are static.

Marina rests hugging the child who groans and with his tiny mouth seeks mother’s breast. Marina opens her eyes and looks at the child. The camera leaves the boat and slowly slides over the surf line. At this time we hear Marina’s voce.

MARINA’S VOCE
O love! – she screamed
In heaven looking.
Where is fidelity
The liar swore with?
Return my love me
As it was!
Or take away my wintry life
For I don’t suffer anymore.
I do not want him to exist
So far from me, so close to her.
He will not make me – mighty Gods,
I swear! - suffer anymore!

The camere leaves the line of the sand and slides over the pale grass. The impulse of sea breeze makes the grass slightly move and whisper.

MARINA’S VOICE
Are brighter her eyes
Than my ones?
You’ ll never find in her soul
Fidelity that is in mine.

From mouth her
You’ll never get
The kisses’ sweetness
That I gave.

Don’t tell! Don’t tell!
No need for words!
Because all these
You better know…

After long slow movement the camera stops. At the grass we see the old photo. This is the photo of Arthur, the boy dead of pneumonia somewhere in Germany many years ago. The image faded and washed, a lot of sand grain stuck at it, but the boy’s face is identifiable. We look at this face, at its slightly closed eyes. And somewhere not afar we hear the child lamentation. Very soon the lamentation stops, perhaps Marina gave to child her breast.

The end
