Chapter 1 “The Land Of Fire”
Segment 4

***
The first time the bearded man found himself in this grotto was the time when he ran away and hid from the fangs of a vicious wild pig.

The animal attacked put of nowhere, when he was on his way back after a successful hunt, loaded from head to toes with the heavy catch. The wild boar ran towards Ad and tore into his left side, barely missing his heart.

The beast was going to go for another strike.

But the protruding rock that could not have come up at a better time, saved the hunter’s life.

Bleeding heavily, the wounded caveman crawled into some narrow cleavage between rocks and fell to the ground that was covered by the wet crimson rocks.

He laid there motionlessly, half-unconscious, until the night fall. Water dripped down the grotto that rescued him.

The measured pace of falling drops of water had a calming effect. The sharp pain gradually went away.
It was already dark, but Ad decided to wait a little bit longer in this hidden place. He stretched with pleasure and fell fast asleep, pressing the smooth clot stone to his chest.

In the morning the savage examined his wound and could not believe his eyes - the huge heavily bleeding hole almost healed. Carefully he ran his palm on the edges of the healed depression, looked again, and did not see any trace of the cut that was here before. It was just… a little scratch, that’s it.

Suddenly his blood pressure spiked. Ad started feeling the pulsating blood even in the tips of his fingers. The blood pounded in his temples. The strange thing was that his strength doubled, and with that came the desire for revenge that laid dormant somewhere deep down inside of him. It was a desire to kill that was impossible to suppress.

Ad found his pretty quickly. The wild boar was asleep, not far away, in the growth of some bushes that were just as naked as the rest of the woods adjacent to the cliffs. This way the lair of the beast could be seen from afar.

One swing of a wide crooked knife - and it was over. The savage smiled with self-satisfaction, kicking the fallen adversary. And suddenly the surrounding world became dark-red. The red curtain that covered his eyes blended together with the river of blood that was coming out of the beasts’ belly.

The bearded man decided not to take the dead boar with him - he did not need any extra weight. The attack of sudden cruelty had passed, his might dwindled, as if someone took it back, and pulled all the strength from his body.

Ad picked up the yesterday’s catch that was still laying nearby, behind the rocky cliff, and he slowly made his way home.
