The mountains of North-eastern Iran have a story to tell. Standing since antiquity, and crowning Khorasan – the land where the Sun rises – these kuhistan have been the refuge ofthe oppressed, the exile of the displaced and the frontier of the clash of great empires. It is to these mountains and their people that the province of Khorasan owes its diversity and wealth of cultural heritage. There are – among many – two historical events to consider which have been instrumental in defining the character of this land.
