Student of the school of healers - Yadina
There will even be one heroine, a little girl with the strange name Yadina. Yadina lives in the quarter of Doctors, studies in the first "I" class, at the school of Doctors. Every student of the school of doctors wants to learn how to be useful to people and become an excellent doctor, but the main goal of the students of the school is to get their own name. However, it is not so easy, a child can get a name only if he is lucky and he finds a person who agrees that he will be treated. In case of successful healing, the student of the school, in a solemn atmosphere, will receive his own name! However, little Yadina was not lucky, even her mother did not agree to the treatment, and after all, Yadina saw that her mother burned her hand. And then a plan was born in the head of the crumbs ...
However, we will talk about plans later, but now let's get back to the smart bird Nevorone. Despite the fact that there are many actors in this true story, the Nevoron bird considers itself the most important character. And only because she stood at the origins of our story and was present at the denouement. Maybe she's right.
I honestly don't know. The birds of the crow tribe live a long time, much longer than a man. Maybe everything was a little different, but I have no right to doubt what I was told. The bird confided to me the secret story of his life.
THE OUTSIDE OF THE VILLAGE OF LEKARKI. A HUNDRED, AND MAYBE TWO HUNDRED OR THREE Hundred Years Ago
Evening. The fog smells like flowers
So, please imagine that in front of you is a small village surrounded by a swamp. Evening. The fog smells like flowers. And everything I'm about to tell you was a very long time ago. How long, I can’t specify, the crows have their own account, crow. And they live for a long time, many centuries.
This story took place in the fall.
The villagers stood silently near the dividing ditch. On the other side of the moat stood a girl, almost a girl. The girl was silent. The villagers were also silent. There were teenagers in the crowd of villagers, but they were also silent. Suddenly, a huge cloud of fog appeared and hung over the silent crowd. The cloud quickly began to decline. The fog began to slowly absorb the gloomy faces.
But the girl on the other side of the moat was inaccessible to the tentacles of mist, the sun was over her head.
The fog swallowed people from the village centimeter by centimeter. Here, over the foggy haze, only ridiculous, waist-deep torsos remained sticking out, when suddenly a stone fell near the feet of the head of the village
perfect cubic shape. The head bent down to take the stone. A sigh passed through the crowd.
And then the fog recedes, and the girl in fear tries to cover her head with her hands.
The inhabitants, who were silent in unison, now also unanimously begin to chant:
- Leave! Leave! Leave! they shout.
The head raises the stone above his head and, taking aim, throws it at the girl. And although the dividing ditch is very small, and the distance to the girl is only a few tens of steps, the stone flies past.
A mournful sigh passes through the crowd.
The fog begins to engulf the inhabitants again. Now people are standing, shrouded in mist up to their shoulders. But the absorption is interrupted again.
A perfectly round stone falls at the feet of the oldest inhabitant of the village. The fog recedes again, and the inhabitants chant only one word. But the oldest man in the village can't hit the girl either.
The fog descends on the villagers for the third time. Only the heads remain free from fog.
This time the stone falls at the feet of the youngest resident of the village, he is seven years old. There are no younger children in the village. They won't be born.
The stone that fell at the boy's feet is triangular in shape. It looks like an arrowhead, only much larger than an ordinary arrowhead.
The boy throws a stone and hits the girl in the stomach. She doubles over, falls, and rolls on the ground in pain.
The villagers scream with joy, and a hail of stones flies at the girl.
In order not to be beaten to death, the girl crawls back. This is a disastrous path, because it leads to a swampy bog.
The bog is deadly, but not for the girl. In order to become inaccessible to the villagers, she runs along the path to the very middle of the swamp.
This is a dead place. Beneath these bumps lie the bones of many people. But the girl is standing right on the quagmire, as if on solid ground.
Again there is an unsettling silence. People obediently expose their bodies and faces to the fog.
Finally, when only the eyes remain free from fog, the Head decides:
"Then we'll leave!" he says grimly. -Let's go away! Listen, we're leaving! You win!
The fog completely absorbs the figures of the departing people. The girl sobs and stretches her arms towards the departing. She doesn't want that kind of victory. But no one cares about her wishes.
The night is coming.
Carts loaded with belongings, poultry and supplies leave the village farther and farther away.
Finally, the tail of the column disappears around the corner. Three hours have passed. There are two at the end of the column. This is a grandmother and granddaughter. They are tired, but the grandmother is brave and does not show it. Finally, girlsand, unable to bear the gloomy silence that reigned in the column of people, he asks his grandmother in a whisper:
“Grandma, why are we leaving and she is staying?” Where will we live?
- Hush, granddaughter, do not scream! Grandmother replies in fear. We leave, but she stays. That's all you need to know!
- What will she eat? After all, we took everything away, to a single grain!
"But that shouldn't worry you!" The only thing you have to remember is that we left and she stayed! And this will happen to anyone who tries to interfere with God's will!
- What is it like?
“If a man is to die, he must die!” And no one has the right to treat, save and detain him on this earth!
- And if I get sick, you will not allow me to treat?
- Not!
“But I won’t let you die, I’ll bring you a doctor, and you will live a long, long time!”
- Do not blaspheme!
Grandmother hits the girl on the lips, but then, looking around, gently pulls her to her:
- Speak quietly, or someone will hear! And they will return you there, to the village, to the doctor! And you will die there of hunger for a couple!
A column of people and carts disappears around the corner.
Five years have passed.
Abandoned houses are overgrown with grass, trees and flowers. Like five years ago, it's September outside.
To the place where five years ago all the inhabitants of the village left for the unknown, a girl comes out.
A man is lying face down on the road. You can't tell if he's old or young. His clothes are tattered, there are no shoes. The legs are burned, in festering wounds, the hands are in scabs.
The girl turns the man on his back. His face is a complete bruise. Someone beat him long and accurately.
The man does not regain consciousness, no matter how the girl tries to make him wake up. Finally, having exhausted all the ways, she puts him on her back and carries him to the nearest house.
It doesn't seem to be difficult for her.
It's been two days
- Who are you? the man asks in a whisper, trying to rise from the couch.
— Doctor.
“So, I did get there!
The girl smiles to herself.
“So it has arrived.
How did you save me? I had less than an hour to live!
- You might think! Who told you such nonsense?!
- I was told!
- You really had everything inside you beat off! With such sores, they do not live long! But you had much more than one hour to live!
- How?! The man looks longingly at the doctor. How long did I have to live?
- Many hours! And I used them completely, to the second! And therefore, somewhere in three days you will be able to get up and go your own way!
- Go your own way! the patient repeats thoughtfully after the girl. - What if I don't want to?
- You should! You all come from somewhere and go somewhere, but I stay!
- What is your name?
- I dont know! - The girl says and looks bitterly into the distance.
- May I stay?
Let's talk about it in three days.
On a gray rainy day, a man stands in the middle of the road, he is almost healthy, but he would give everything in the world to lie down in a comfortable bed for at least an hour and feel the touch of gentle, pain-relieving hands. Three days have passed since the last conversation between the doctor and the man.
“I have nothing to give you!” - the man is playing for time. - If I were a rich man, what would you like as a gift?
- Name!
- What?
-Give me a name! - says the girl, showing unusual perseverance
The man stands, not knowing what to think. Finally deciding that the girl is joking with him, he takes a wand from the ground, invites the girl to get down on one knee and, touching her, speaks in a solemn voice
- I call you ... - He looks around, finally, his eyes stumble upon something, - Mandrake!
After that, the man resolutely leaves, forcing himself not to look back.
Three more days passed.
The girl goes to the outskirts of the village and looks into the distance, shielding her face from the sun with her hand.
Autumn morning. She stands and waits for the traveler, who is still not visible because of the turn.
Each time the same thing is repeated, the traveler is still many kilometers from the village, and she is already waiting.
But this traveler is special, and so she dressed up in her mother's dress and stuck a mandrake flower in her hair. The crow watching this picture is excited. She is still very young, and it is new for her to observe human relations. A man appears around the corner.
- I returned!
- I see! - the girl cries, not hiding her tears.
I'm back for good!
- This is good!
- But first…
- What? - The girl is worried.
-Give me a name! I forgot my old name, and without a new one I can't start a new life!
The girl comes close to the man, hugs him and whispers something in his ear.
The bird rises higher and higher, the outlines of the village are visible, and now the village turns into a speck on the map, which soon merges with other specks and disappears.
CHAPTER FIRST
MANY CENTURIES LATER
Yadina
Some bird descends sharply, almost dives.
The outlines of the village are the same, but it is no longer a village, but a suburb. Rather, a quarter, a quarter of doctors.
A curious crow sits on the windowsill and looks out one of the windows.
It's September again. Autumn morning. Mom and daughter are in the kitchen. This is Yadina and her mother. Mother is fifty years old. Daughters five. The girl is quite small for her age, looks like three years old. Knowing this, she oftenenjoys it. Sometimes it is envious, but evil - never. She can easily steal the thing she likes, but she will also easily give her favorite toy to someone who needs it badly.
Often imitates adults in his speech. Words that are hard to pronounce are her favorite. They help her to assert herself.
Yadina spins around her mother and prevents her from preparing dinner. Looking around and making sure that no one is looking at her, she takes her father's medicine ring from the medicine box and puts it in her pocket. Then he timidly approaches his mother and begins to moan:
- Mom, mom, can I cure you? Well, I know you're in pain!
Mom catches Yadina, who is spinning because she cannot stand still for more than one minute, pulls a ring out of her pocket and puts it back in the drawer.
- What kind of child is this? Will you let me cook dinner or not? You better take an example from your brother! Sits studying anatomy!
Yadina removes the amulet from her brother's neck. The brother, accustomed to such actions of his sister, does not protest. Without taking his eyes off the book, he even helps his sister remove the amulet.
- Ugh, this is so boring! Why should I study anatomy if I already feel like that when a person has something in pain. Here you recently scalded your hand and are silent. Well, let me treat her!
While talking, he tries to imperceptibly move closer to the mother from the side of the sore hand, and apply the amulet.
Yadina's mother sees everything perfectly, but in order not to offend her daughter, she turns ninety degrees, pretending that she wants to take something from the vegetable basket. She hides her smile, trying to remain stern.
“If you don’t get out of the kitchen right away, I’ll spank you with this wet rag!”
- I'll spank, I'll spank! You only threaten. Never spanked yet! You only love your son! I'll just take it and leave the house!
“Go, go, my angry healer!”
The woman takes the amulet from her daughter and puts it back on her son's neck.
"Don't forget to come back for dinner!"
Yadina's mother is trying to straighten a strand of hair that has fallen out of her daughter's pigtail. At this moment, a ray of sun falls on my mother and illuminates her, blue-black hair, like a young girl's.
The girl wriggles out of her mother's arms and runs out of the house, angrily slamming the door. The crow flies after her.
An hour passes, then two. Three hours pass. And three more hours. Finally, it becomes almost dark. Mom calls out on the porch:
- Yadina! Time to go home! Yadina! If you don't answer now, I'll send your brother Yad to fetch his father! Yadina!
But the girl does not respond. Mom already understands that something happened to her daughter, she has never returned so late. It’s cold outside in autumn, but my mother is standing on the porch and waiting, not noticing that she is completely cold. Finally, Yadina's brother, Yad, almost by force takes her into the house. The quarter does not sleep. Many lights flock to Yadina's house. These are residents of the doctors' quarter, who, together with Yadina's father and brother, have been looking for the girl for several hours now.
