EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS (1875-1950)
Edgar Rice Burroughs is one of the world’s most popular authors. Although not fully recognized by some critics and libraries, he remains one of the best known American fiction writers of the 20th century. With no previous experience as an author, he wrote the renowned classic TARZAN OF THE APES, first published in 1912. In the ensuing forty-two years, he wrote over 100 stories and articles, nearly all of which were published during his lifetime. Although best known for creating TARZAN, his worlds of adventure and romance ranged from the American West to the jungles of Asia, from inside the earth on to the moon, Mars, Venus and even beyond the farthest star.
No one knows how many copies of ERB’s 68 books have been published throughout the world. It is conservative to say, however, that of the translations into 31 languages in addition to the artificial languages of Esperanto and Braille, the total number must run into the hundreds of millions. When one considers the additional world-wide following of the Tarzan newspaper feature, radio programs, comic magazines, motion pictures and television series, Burroughs must be known by a thousand million people.
Whether you are about to read an adventure on Mars, a romance of the jungle, or a fantasy of the future, the magic of the prolific imagination of Edgar Rice Burroughs will hold you spellbound for a long time to come.
