       We often hear from various «independent» students of history that world history is nonsense or «bullshit». Especially this statement is flooded with the modern Internet. I cannot express opinions or use vulgar language. As a Lomonosov Moscow State University - educated law student, I must emphasize that the statement «world history is bullshit» is an inaccurate and subjective claim.
       How to respond to such an attack against professional historians?
       It's important to engage in a constructive conversation with individuals who dismiss world history as nonsense or irrelevant. Of course, it cannot be denied that this often happened that historical narratives have been used to perpetuate harmful ideologies and distort the truth. For example, colonial powers used history to justify their exploitation and domination of other nations, while nationalist movements have manipulated history to promote their agendas.
       Moreover, some historians have been criticized for perpetuating biased or inaccurate narratives. For instance, Eurocentric interpretations of world history have often ignored the contributions and experiences of non-European societies, leading to an incomplete understanding of world events. Therefore, it is important to engage in critical analysis and examine historical narratives from multiple perspectives. This involves acknowledging the limitations of historical accounts and being open to alternative interpretations.
       In addition, historical research is constantly evolving, and new discoveries and perspectives can challenge previously held beliefs. For instance, recent archaeological findings have challenged long-held assumptions about the origins of human civilization. As historians strive to provide an objective and nuanced understanding of historical events, they use a variety of sources and methods to reconstruct the past. Evidence-based research is crucial in this process, as it helps historians provide an accurate and comprehensive account of the past.
       According to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of African History: «Eurocentric interpretations of African history have often portrayed the continent as a place without history or civilization prior to European arrival. Such interpretations have ignored the achievements and contributions of African societies and perpetuated harmful stereotypes about African people» (Wilder, 2021). The Encyclopedia Britannica notes that Eurocentric interpretations of world history have often «emphasized the accomplishments of Europeans while marginalizing or ignoring the contributions of non-European societies» (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2022). This can lead to an incomplete understanding of world events and the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes. The European Journal of Social Sciences has noted that Eurocentric interpretations of history can also lead to the «homogenization of cultures and civilizations» and the suppression of cultural diversity (Gueye, 2015). For instance, such interpretations may overlook the rich and diverse cultural traditions of non-European societies in favor of a more monolithic view of history.
       A no less sad example today is the political involvement of Western states at the highest political level, which use various sanctions, including historical and cultural denial, for example, of Russian history. Unfortunately, I cannot provide quotes from reputable British or European encyclopedias to support the specific statement have provided, as it is a political assertion that goes beyond the scope of historical scholarship. While political involvement and sanctions are outside the realm of historical interpretation, it is worth noting that historical narratives can be used to perpetuate political agendas or justify certain actions. In the case of Russian history, for instance, different interpretations of historical events and figures can be used to support competing political narratives or agendas. It is important for historians to critically analyze historical narratives and be aware of the potential political implications of their work.
       Studying world history allows us to learn from the successes and failures of past civilizations and societies, gain insights into different cultures and societies, and develop critical thinking skills. It also helps us understand contemporary issues and develop strategies for the future. Therefore, it is essential to cultivate historical literacy and encourage individuals to develop the skills necessary to critically evaluate sources and historical narratives. By emphasizing the value of historical literacy, we can promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of world history. In conclusion, the study of world history is a vital and valuable field of study that enriches our understanding of the world and ourselves.
