Jewish Grandma explains purpose of science in ABA

Once upon a time, there was a Jewish grandma named Bubbe. She was famous for her delicious matzo ball soup and her love for her grandchildren. One day, her granddaughter Sarah asked her, "Bubbe, what is ABA?"

Bubbe smiled and said, "Well, Sarah, ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It's a science that helps us understand and change behavior."

Sarah looked confused. "What does that mean, Bubbe?"

Bubbe paused for a moment, then said, "You know how I make my matzo ball soup? I follow a recipe and use specific ingredients in specific amounts. I measure everything out precisely, because I know that's what makes the soup taste good. ABA is kind of like that, but for behavior."

Sarah's eyes widened. "Oh, I get it! So, ABA is like a recipe for behavior?"

"Exactly!" Bubbe exclaimed. "Just like how I use precise measurements and steps to create delicious food, ABA uses precise measurements and steps to achieve a desired behavior outcome."

Sarah nodded thoughtfully, then asked, "But how does ABA work?"

Bubbe smiled again. "Well, let me tell you a story. You know how during Hanukkah, we give out gelt or chocolate coins to children who exhibit good behavior?"

Sarah nodded eagerly. "Of course! I love getting gelt!"

Bubbe chuckled. "That's positive reinforcement, Sarah. When we give a child a reward for exhibiting good behavior, we're reinforcing that behavior, so they're more likely to do it again."

Sarah looked impressed. "Wow, that's clever! What about when we do something wrong?"

Bubbe's smile faded a bit. "Well, sometimes we need to use punishment. Just like how during Yom Kippur, we might take away privileges or do something to atone for our mistakes. In ABA, we might use time-outs or remove privileges to decrease unwanted behavior."

Sarah looked thoughtful. "I see. But how do we know if the ABA is working?"

Bubbe nodded. "That's where data collection comes in, Sarah. You know how during Passover, we keep track of what we eat to make sure we're following the rules? In ABA, we collect data to measure progress and ensure that interventions are effective."

Sarah smiled. "I get it now, Bubbe! ABA is like cooking, Hanukkah, Yom Kippur, and Passover all rolled into one!"

Bubbe laughed. "You're right, Sarah! ABA is a science that helps us understand and change behavior, just like how cooking is a science that helps us create delicious food. And just like how our Jewish traditions help us make sense of the world around us, ABA helps us make sense of behavior."
