The Smile of Idol by Felix Krivin

The idol smiled questioningly.
I've lost my hope, – the man said.  I don't know how I lost it.  Yesterday it was still there, but today I woke up - and there is no hope.
The idol smiled deprecatingly.
 – I know it's improper.  One should not lose his hope.  I tried my best, but it happened... Do you understand?
The idol smiled understandingly.
'I knew you would.  When you lose hope, it's so important that someone understands you.  Understands and reassures.  But who can reassure me?
The idol smiled reassuringly.
 – Are you reassuring me?  Are you giving me new hope?  Oh, thank you, thank you!  Now it's easier for me to live in the world!
The idol smiled.  Understandingly, promisingly.
