Sunak cancels Greek PM meeting in Parthenon Sculptures row

A diplomatic row has broken out between the British and Greek governments over the Parthenon Sculptures, also known as the Elgin Marbles.

The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was due to meet Rishi Sunak in London, but No 10 cancelled the meeting at the last minute.

He told reporters he was "deeply disappointed by the abrupt cancellation" of the meeting.

Mr Mitsotakis rejected an alternative meeting with the deputy prime minister.

Sculptures row about politics as much as history
What will be the fate of the Parthenon Sculptures?

The cancellation came a day after Mr Mitsotakis told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg that the marbles should be returned, as having some of the artefacts in London and the rest in Athens was like cutting the Mona Lisa in half.

he Greek prime minister told reporters on Monday evening he was disappointed the meeting had been cancelled "mere hours before its slated time", saying: "Those who firmly believe in the correctness and justice of their positions are never hesitant to engage in constructive argumentation and debate."

Mr Mitsotakis said: "Greece and Britain share longstanding ties of friendship, and the scope of our bilateral relations is extensive.

"Our positions on the matter of the Parthenon Sculptures are well-known. I had anticipated engaging in a discussion with my British counterpart on this issue, as well as addressing significant global challenges such as the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, the climate crisis, and migration."

Sources with knowledge of the mood in the Greek government said Mr Mitsotakis was "baffled" and "annoyed".

The meeting had been due to happen at lunchtime on Tuesday and, the BBC understands, was due to last 45 minutes.

But Mr Mitsotakis's appearance on the the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme had irritated Mr Sunak.

The British government confirmed the cancellation and offered the Greek PM a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden instead.

A senior Conservative source said: "It became impossible for this meeting to go ahead following commentary regarding the Elgin Marbles prior to it.

"Our position is clear - the Elgin Marbles are part of the permanent collection of the British Museum and belong here. It is reckless for any British politician to suggest that this is subject to negotiation."

Mr Mitsotakis met the Labour leader Keir Starmer earlier.

He will now return to Greece on Tuesday after his scheduled meetings in the morning - declining the meeting with Mr Dowden.

'Slippery slope'
Don't underestimate the politics of this row.

The Conservatives argue it was naive of Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer to meet the Greek leader, given the public view he expressed on the future of the marbles on Sunday.

Labour's view is they wouldn't stand in the way of a loan arrangement between the British Museum and Athens if one was arranged.

Mr Mitsotakis met Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in London on Monday
A spokesperson for the British government said there were "no plans" to change the 1963 British Museum Act - which prohibits the removal of objects from the institution's collection.

But a loan does not require a change in the law and so could happen irrespective of the view of the British prime minister.

Many Conservatives believe such an arrangement would be a "slippery slope", as one put it to me.

"Keir Starmer is clearly keen to ignore the contributions generations of British taxpayers have made to keep them safe and share them with the world," one party source claimed.

But a Labour source said their position was long-standing - a Labour government would not change the law to allow the sculptures to be permanently moved - and Mr Sunak's behaviour was "pathetic".

Another source said "what a bizarre piece of culture war theatre".

A Labour spokesperson said: "If the prime minister isn't able to meet with a European ally with whom Britain has important economic ties, this is further proof he isn't able to provide the serious economic leadership our country requires. Keir Starmer's Labour Party stands ready."

Loan arrangement explored
The sculptures are arguably the most high-profile artworks in the increasingly contested debate about whether museums across the world should return items to their countries of origin.

Lord Elgin, a British soldier and diplomat, removed them from the Parthenon temple in Athens in the early 19th Century. The sculptures were then bought by the British government in 1816 and placed in the British Museum.

The marble figures are part of a frieze that decorated the 2,500-year old temple, made by the sculptor Phidias.

The Parthenon Gallery at the Acropolis Museum was built more than a decade ago to house the sculptures. The exhibition combines the original marble sculptures with plaster copies of those held in the British Museum and other foreign museums.

The trustees of the British Museum are currently exploring the prospect of a loan arrangement with Greece.

The British Museum's Chair of Trustees, George Osborne, who is the former chancellor, has previously said he is looking to find "some kind of arrangement to allow some of the sculptures to spend some of their time in Greece".

Speaking to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee in October, Mr Osborne said any deal would have to see "objects from Greece coming here" for the first time.

It is thought any decision is at least months away.

Sunak cancels meeting with Greek PM due to Parthenon Sculptures
A diplomatic dispute has erupted between the British and Greek governments over the Elgin Marbles.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was due to meet Rishi Sunak in London, but Downing Street cancelled it at the last minute.
A spokesman for the Greek prime minister told the BBC he was "disappointed" that the meeting was cancelled "at the 11th hour."
The British government confirmed the meeting had been cancelled.
The cancellation came just days after Mr Mitsotakis told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg that the Marbles should be returned.
"The prime minister is disappointed that Prime Minister Sunak canceled their bilateral meeting at the 11th hour today," the Greek statement said.
"Greece and Britain have a very deep history of friendship and cooperation and the Greek government is extremely surprised by this decision.
The prime minister looked forward to discussing a number of issues of mutual interest, including the Israel-Gaza conflict, Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, climate change, as well as common challenges such as migration and of course the Parthenon Sculptures.
Sources familiar with the Greek government's intentions said Mr Mitsotakis was "confused and annoyed."
The meeting was due to take place tomorrow at noon and, as the BBC understands, was due to last 45 minutes.
But Mr Mitsotakis ' appearance on BBC Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg's programme had Rishi Sunak irked.
The Greek prime minister said the Elgin Marbles should be returned as there are some of the artifacts in London and the rest in Athens is like cutting the Mona Lisa in half.
The marbles, also known as the Parthenon sculptures, are ancient Greek treasures in the British Museum brought to the UK by British diplomat Lord Elgin in the early 19th century.
The British government confirmed the cancellation and said the government's deputy prime minister would meet with the Greek Prime Minister.
A senior Tory source said: "it was impossible to hold this meeting after commenting on the Elgin Marbles before it.
Our position is clear. The Elgin Marbles are part of the British Museum's permanent collection and belong here. It is reckless for any British politician to suggest that this is subject to negotiation."
Mr Mitsotakis met earlier with Labour leader Keir Starmer.>

Greece finally has a normal prime minister and a normal government that, of course, is not perfect and mistakes have been made and a lot of good. Who knows that as long as he is prime minister that he will not embarrass you and that he will represent the country worthily abroad!

For the first time ever, a British Prime Minister cancels a conversation with a Greek prime minister because he knows in advance that he will not be in a position of power. Very positive development for the position of our country and personally for Mr Mitsotakis

This is not an Englishman, but an Indian, and a rude one. Traditional phlegmatic English politeness would never allow such a thing. It is a shame for "Great Britain" to be represented by such guys anymore. Indian Prime Minister, Pakistani mayor of London and so on. Will we see yet?.. The ultimate downfall. In a few years what we knew as Europe, European behaviour European culture, will no longer exist. This is why the European peoples are slowly reacting and rushing towards the racist / fascist extreme right (eg. Holland, etc.), with all the evils that this entails. Let's hope we don't experience something like that here.

The decision of the British prime minister is indicative of the highly problematic and depressed position of the country on an international political level. The British side did so because it can do so by reminding the Greek side and otherwise its Atlanticist government what the real balance of forces is and what the real position of Greece is. Greeks would do well to be careful because today a meeting is canceled due to sculptures (and partly as a signal to Ankara due to regional circumstances) tomorrow it may be canceled for more sensitive and strategic national issues. Leave the micromanages( the scions and factions), gather and build a country.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
canceled a meeting with the head of the Greek government
Kyriakos Mitsotakis
because of an interview with the Greek prime minister.

This is reported by the newspaper
Protothema.

Greece

The meeting was canceled
in just
a few hours.
The reason was
the words
the Greek premiere
about stored in the British Museum
marble masterpieces of the Parthenon.
He called the sculptures
stolen
and expressed the opinion that
they
"would look better in the Acropolis Museum."

Mitsotakis is currently
in London
on a working visit.
His meeting with the head of the British government
was scheduled
for Tuesday [November 28, 2023]
at 12:00 local time.
The leaders' talks were expected
to last 45 minutes.

In 2021
Kyriakos Mitsotakis,
speaking
at the celebration
of the 75th anniversary of the founding of UNESCO,
demanded that the UK
return the masterpieces of the Parthenon,
taken out of the country
in the 19th century.

Затонувшее возле греческого острова Лесбоса

грузовое судно Raptor шло на Украину
с подозрительным грузом.

Об этом пишет газета

Kathimerini.

Raptor

Raptor freighter: Red flags uncovered in wake of shipwreck

New details are surfacing about the shipwreck of the Raptor freighter vessel, which sank off the coast of Lesvos on Sunday. With one confirmed fatality, one survivor, and 12 crew members still missing

New details are surfacing about the shipwreck of the Raptor freighter vessel, which sank off the coast of Lesvos on Sunday. With one confirmed fatality, one survivor, and 12 crew members still missing, indications point to the vessel being blacklisted by the Port State Control (PSC) regimes of the Paris MOU and the Black Sea MOU. This stems from the revelation two years ago that the crew’s documents were declared invalid, and false entries were found in the oil record book.

The latest finding suggests that the ship may have engaged in illegal, undeclared routes, possibly involved in smuggling. According to the same information, authorities’ suspicions are heightened by the fact that the rescued sailor informed Greek coastguard officials that the ship’s final destination was Ukraine, and Istanbul was a refueling stop.

These details are under scrutiny by authorities investigating the circumstances of the shipwreck. If proven, they may also be linked to the fact that, following the instructions of the shipowning company, the crew did not seek assistance on Saturday despite the ship showing signs of taking in water. Instead, they requested help just a few hours before the sinking on Sunday morning.

Additionally, it has been reported that the same shipping company owned the Manassa Rose, which sank in the bay of Kissamos, northwestern Crete, in January 2022. Back then authorities filed charges against crew members for causing a shipwreck and smuggling tobacco products.
