Abstract
As a result of a joint German-Kazakhstan project and field work in SW-Kazakhstan the Miocene-Oligocene lithostratigraphic sequence of the Ustyurt Plateau and adjacent regions has been studied, and based on vertebrate remains, the biostratigraphic situation has been clarified. Possibilities of correlation of local lithostratigraphy of the eastern part of the Paratethys to that of the Central Paratethys are discussed. The paleobiological situation in the region is analyzed. The Bestobe fauna of vertebrates from the Bestobe Fm. resembles that of MN4 rather than that of MN3. The Mynsualmas mammalian fauna from the lower part of the Shomyshtin Fm. is similar to that of the Miocene faunas of vertebrates in Europe, Anatolia and China from the beginning of the middle Miocene, indicating an age of MN6 or MN7 (Early-Middle Astaracian).

Kurzfassung
Als Ergebnis einer im Rahmen eines deutsch-kasachischen Projektes durchgefuehrten Expedition nach SW-Kasachstan wurde die oligo-miozaene lithostratigraphische Abfolge der Ablagerungen des Ustyurt-Plateaus und angrenzender Gebiete erarbeitet. Die Auswertung mehrerer vorgefundener Wirbeltierassoziationen erlaubt die biostratigraphische Einordnung der Profile. Moeglichkeiten der Korrelation der lokalen Stratigraphie mit der Chronostratigraphie der oestlichen und zentralen Paratethys werden diskutiert. Die Vertebratenfauna von Bestobe in der Bestobe-Formation entspricht eher dem Niveau von MN4 als dem von MN3. Die Saeugetierfauna von Mynsualmas stammt aus dem tieferen Teil der Schomyschtin-Formation. Sie aehnelt in MN6/MN7 eingeordneten Saeugerfaunen aus Europa, Anatolien und China deutet damit auf eine Altersstellung von unterem Mittel-Miozaen hin (Unter-/Mittel-Astaracium).
