Elderly Russians are massively unable to take the Latvian language exam, which is needed to extend a residence permit, according to the data of the State Center for Educational Content (VISC). More than 50 percent of participants in the 66-74 age group and 80 percent in the over-75 age group failed the exam.

In 2023, 17.8 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation had to take the exam. Less than 40 percent of the candidates passed the test the first time.

There have already been several high-profile stories about the expulsion of Russians in the country
On January 10, 82-year-old head of the Latvian-Russian Cooperation Association Boris Katkov received a letter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which stated that he was considered a national threat and for this reason was deprived of a residence permit and deported. The letter also stated that the pensioner has a month to challenge this decision.

On January 12, at 8 a.m., border guards arrived at Katkov's house in Riga and announced that they would deport him. They were given an hour to pack, and in case of disobedience, they promised to break down the doors and take them away by force. The law enforcement officers ignored the right to appeal the decision on deportation.

A resident of Liepaja has been visually impaired since childhood and needs constant care and support. With the help of relatives, the woman began collecting documents for the extension of her residence permit back in December 2022. However, she failed to receive a medical withdrawal from the Latvian language exam on time due to queues that delayed the process until November 2023. Because of this, the blind pensioner had to undergo language testing, which she failed to pass in reading and writing.

The Russian authorities reacted to the deportations

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the deportation of elderly people from the Baltic States an absolute disgrace.

Пожилые россияне массово не могут сдать экзамен по латышскому языку, который нужен для продления ВНЖ, говорится в данных Государственного центра содержания образования (VISC). Экзамен провалили более 50 процентов участников в возрастной группе от 66 до 74 лет и 80 процентов в возрастной группе старше 75 лет.

В 2023 году экзамен должны были сдать 17,8 тысячи граждан РФ. С первого раза тест сдало менее 40 процентов кандидатов.

В стране уже произошло несколько резонансных историй с выдворением россиян
10 января 82-летний руководитель Латвийско-российской ассоциации сотрудничества Борис Катков получил письмо от МВД, в котором говорилось, что его считают национальной угрозой и по этой причине лишают ВНЖ и депортируют. Также в письме сообщалось, что у пенсионера есть месяц на то, чтобы оспорить это решение.

12 января в 8 утра в дом к Каткову в Риге приехали пограничники и объявили, что депортируют его. На сборы дали час, в случае неповиновения обещали выломать двери и увезти насильно. Право на обжалование решения о депортации правоохранители проигнорировали.

Также за незнание языка власти Латвии решили депортировать из страны незрячую 72-летнюю пенсионерку.

Жительница города Лиепая является инвалидом по зрению с детства и нуждается в постоянном уходе и сопровождении. С помощью родственников женщина начала собирать документы для продления вида на жительство еще в декабре 2022 года. Однако получить медицинский отвод от экзамена по латышскому языку в срок ей не удалось из-за очередей, затянувших процесс до ноября 2023 года. Из-за этого незрячей пенсионерке пришлось проходить языковое тестирование, которое ей не удалось пройти по чтению и письму.

Российские власти отреагировали на депортации

Официальный представитель Кремля Дмитрий Песков назвал абсолютным позором депортацию пожилых людей из стран Балтии.

 «Безусловно, для любого государства подобная практика принудительных высылок является абсолютным позором»,

Согласно новой редакции закона, Латвия прекратит выдавать рабочие визы россиянам. Помимо этого, Сейм ужесточит условия продления видов на жительство для граждан России и Белоруссии. Также отмечается, что проживающие в прибалтийской республике россияне, имеющие постоянный ВНЖ, должны подтвердить владение государственным языком.
