Amalek The Inner Battle

The weekly Torah portion Ki Tetze introduces laws that embody principles of justice, mercy, and respect for human dignity. However, among all the commandments, the directive to battle Amalek holds a special place.

Amalek is not merely a nation mentioned in history but a symbol of internal struggle. He represents the force that cools our enthusiasm for Torah study, extinguishes our drive for spiritual service, and weakens our connection with the Divine. As the evil inclination, Amalek invades life when a person is filled with inspiration and seeks to extinguish that inner fire.

The Torah teaches that the battle against Amalek is not only a physical confrontation. It is important to erase his memory, but not just from the outside world—within ourselves as well. He symbolizes the internal enemy that tries to steal our spiritual energy. The fight against him is a fight to preserve our spirit and to continue serving God with a pure heart.

Today, Israel continues to battle the descendants of Amalek, both physically and spiritually. The memory of Amalek endures in those who oppose spiritual purity and the pursuit of light. Therefore, each of us must wage our own personal war to overcome the inner enemy and ensure that we are not deprived of our drive for Torah and service to God.
