Slavic Word READ
«Online Etymology Dictionary»
contains very useful information. In particular, that in addition to the sence "interpret and understand the meaning of written symbols" the same root also meant in Old English the following :
consider
arrange
to put in order
to count
to reason,
to consider,
to explain
Another important and correct observation of the author of this article is : “ Most languages use a word rooted in the idea of "gather up" as their word for "read"
The same meanings of "gathering", "putting in order", "counting" are also found in the Russian root CHIT (ЧИТ). In addition to the meaning of "to read", the same root also carries the meaning of "combining" in the word СОЧЕТАТЬ (SOCHITATI) and the meaning of "counting" in the word СЧИТАТЬ (SCHITATI.)
Now let's turn to the Russian word РЯДИТЬ (RYADIT). The root РЯД (RYAD) sounds very similar to RID (READ). Compare: RID/RYAD. Among the meanings of this root there are the meanings of "arranging". establishing order,
reasoning, interpreting. The original, primary sence of the Russian root RYAD is
“a string, a line, objects in one line, in order, in a row”, that is, “something arranged in the same order as letters collected into a single text”.
The same dictionary entry quite rightly notes that the English word RIDDLE is of the same origin as READ. It is noteworthy that RIDDLE is similar to the hypothetical (reconstructed) Slavic RYADDLO, composed of two parts, RYAD+DLO, where DLO is a suffix that gives the meaning of instrumentality, as in the Czech words
vozidlo "vehicle"
rypadlo “excavator”
lepidlo “glue”
The literal meaning of the word RYADDLO can be expressed as "a tool for thinking".
Among the words that are akin to the word READ, we can point out
Dutch raden ”guess” and German raten "to advise, counsel, interpret, guess”.
Dutch raad and German Rat.
Both in the sence "advice, counsel".
The modern English word riddle shares its origin with the
Dutch raadsel and German R;tsel. Both literally meaning 'thing to be guessed, thing to be interpreted'. Just like a chain of letters and words in the process of reading.
