In the shadow of the rain

It’s raining hard outside today,
The streets are slushy, dull and gray.
People rush to find a roof,
Locking doors, they stay aloof,
Not letting in the damp and chill...
The wind has risen, strong and shrill,
The rain beats down upon the glass,
While underneath, a kitten's cast.

So cold and hungry, all alone,
It cries out like a child, forlorn.
It flees the storm, the pain, the strife,
In search of warmth, a spark of life.
But no one will take it in today—
A little cat lost in the fray.
What of the cat? No care is shown,
When someone’s sick, they’re left alone.

As the crowd just passes by,
Ignoring pleas, they let them lie,
And on the sick, they toss their dirt,
In the world, where hearts are hurt.
