Sofia Kovalevskaya, Ivan Vinogradov and numerology
is dedicated to my mother Renata Fedorovna Pavlova,
who, like Sofia Kovalevskaya, was born on January 15th...
Tomorrow, January 15, 2025, marks the 175th anniversary of Sofia Kovalevskaya's birth.
Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (nee Korvin-Krukovskaya; 01/15/1850 - 02/10/1891 (new style dates)
was a Russian mathematician, writer, and publicist,
the first Russian female professor,
the world's first female professor of mathematics, and the first female corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1889).
S.V. Kovalevskaya's connections with the Velikiye Luki region and the city of Velikiye Luki:
After her father retired in 1858, the whole family moved to the Polibino estate owned by him,
located in the Nevelsky district of the Vitebsk province (now the village of Polibino in the Velikoluksky district of the Pskov region).
Sofia spent almost all her childhood years here.
Interesting numerology:
Date of birth: 01/15/1850 = sum of all numbers = 21
Date of death: 02/10/1891 = sum of all numbers = 22
Velikiye Luki = Kovalevskaya = 11 letters
In the next twentieth century, the birth and childhood years
of another outstanding Russian mathematician, twice Hero of Socialist Labor,
academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1929)
Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov (09/14/1891 - 03/20/1983)
are associated with the Velikiye Luki region and the city of Velikiye Luki.
He was born in the village of Milolyub (now Velikoluksky district of Pskov region) in the family of a rural priest.
He received his secondary education at the Velikiye Luki Secondary School.
In 1910, he entered the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at St. Petersburg University.
After graduating from the university in 1914, he was left there to prepare for a professorship.
Interesting numerology:
I.M. Vinogradov was born in the year of S.V. Kovalevskaya's death in 1891.
Date of birth: 09/14/1891 = sum of all numbers = 33
Became an academician in 1929 = sum of all numbers = 21
