At about 21:00 local time (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday, a PSA Airlines jet operating as American Airlines 5342 collided with a US Army helicopter as it approached Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The passenger plane broke into multiple pieces and sunk several feet into the river, while the helicopter ended up upside down on the water.

The plane, a Bombardier CRJ700, departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was carrying 60 passengers and four crew, American Airlines said.

According to updates from officials, the helicopter was a Sikorsky H-60 that took off from Fort Belvoir in Virginia with three soldiers on board, and belonged to B Company, 12th Aviation Battalion.

No survivors are expected after a passenger plane collided in midair with a helicopter near Washington DC's Ronald Reagan airport on Wednesday evening.

The plane was carrying 64 passengers and crew when it crashed into the Potomac River after the collision. The helicopter had three people on board, who were labelled a "fairly experienced crew" by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Figure skaters from the US and Russia were among passengers on the aeroplane, according to officials from US Figure Skating and a club in Boston.

Authorities searching the freezing waters say they have switched to a recovery operation.

American Airlines.

America suffered a fresh tragedy when a packed passenger jet collided with a US Army helicopter and plunged into Washington DC's Potomac River.

The collision took place as the American Airlines flight carrying 64 people made its final approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport shortly before 9pm ET.

More than 30 bodies have been recovered for the freezing river early Thursday, with authorities saying there are no survivors although search efforts are still ongoing.

A temporary morgue has been set up in the capital to house the bodies.

A Black Hawk helicopter flying a training sortie cut through the airspace from the opposite direction under cover of darkness, with both aircraft seemingly unaware of the other's presence.

They slammed into one another just 400ft above ground, erupting in a violent explosion before plunging into the freezing Potomac River below.

More than 300 first responders and rescue workers were deployed to the Potomac on inflatable boats while others erected searchlights to illuminate the murky waters in a desperate hunt for survivors.

But no one is thought to have survived the brutal mid-air collision that ended with the wreckage of both aircraft sinking to the bottom of the gushing river.

It is the first fatal crash involving a US commercial airline since 2009, when 50 people died in Buffalo, New York, following a crash of a Bombardier DHC-C propeller aircraft.

President Donald Trump said he had been 'fully briefed on this terrible accident' and, referring to the passengers, added, 'May God Bless their souls', while American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed 'deep sorrow' for the crash.

Now, as rescue efforts continue and investigations into the tragic incident begin, here's how the catastrophe unfolded.

American Airlines flight 5342, a CRJ700 Bombardier, took off from Wichita, Kansas and was carrying 60 passengers and four crew.

The plane, designed to carry up to 70 people, was operating well within its capacity on a routine domestic flight, observers said.

'I know that flight. I've flown it several times myself,' said Kansas Senator Jerry Moran said in the wake of the crash.

A few minutes before flight 5342's landing, air traffic controllers asked the arriving commercial jet if it could land on the shorter Runway 33 at Reagan National and the pilots immediately confirmed they were able to do so.

Controllers then cleared the plane to land on Runway 33 and flight tracking sites showed the plane duly adjusted its approach to the new runway.

At the same time, a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk US Army helicopter that had departed from Fort Belvoir in Virginia entered the airspace around Reagan National Airport.

This is some of the most tightly controlled and monitored airspace in the world, just over three miles south of the White House and the Capitol.

All of the previous jets had made landings on the airport's main runway, suggesting that the Black Hawk pilots may have expected the American Airlines flight to follow suit and may not have been aware of the change in flight path.

The helicopter was on a training flight,
according to a US Army spokesperson, but no other details were provided.

Military aircraft frequently conduct training flights in and around the congested and heavily restricted airspace around the nation's capital for familiarisation and continuity of government planning.

Less than 30 seconds before the crash,
an air traffic controller asked the helicopter, whose callsign was registered as PAT25,
if it had the arriving plane in sight.

The controller made another radio call to the helicopter moments later
at 8.47pm ET - minutes before
the American Airlines flight was projected to make its landing.

'PAT25 do you see a CRJ?
PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ,'

 the air traffic controller said.

Seconds later, the night sky above Washington DC
was briefly illuminated
by the fireball that erupted as the two aircraft collided.

The sickening crash occurred at an altitude of just 400ft and less than three kilometres from the runway.

American Airlines flight 5342 was travelling at a speed of 140mph when it smashed into the chopper.

A recording of air traffic control communications revealed the shocked reactions of controllers as they witnessed the crash unfold in real time.

Notable US commercial aircraft crashes
February 12, 2009: a Colgan Air Bombardier aircraft flying from New York to the small town of Buffalo crashes, killing the 49 passengers onboard.

January 15, 2009: a US Airways Airbus A320 carrying more than 150 people collides with a flock of birds before making a spectacular landing on the Hudson River in New York, thanks to the pilot's exemplary actions.

August 27, 2006: a regional transport plane uses a wrong, unlit runway, rather than the designated one and crashes shortly after taking off from Lexington airport, Kentucky, killing around 50 people onboard.

December 19, 2005: a Grumman G-73T Mallard hydroplane operated by Ocean Airways, connecting Miami and an island in the Bahamas, crashes into the sea shortly after takeoff, killing both crew members and 18 passengers.

October 19, 2004: a BAE Jetstream 32 operated by AmericanConnection crashes near Kirksville, Missouri due to poor visibility. Both pilots and 11 out of the 13 passengers are killed.

January 8, 2003: a US Airways Beechcraft 1900, flying between Charlotte, North Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina, crashes into a hangar shortly after takeoff. Both pilots and the 19 passengers onboard are killed.

November 12, 2001: two months after the September 11 attacks, an American Airlines Airbus A-300, flying from New York to Saint-Domingue, crashes shortly after taking off from JFK airport. The 251 passengers and nine crew members are killed. On the ground, several houses are destroyed or damaged, and five residents killed.

January 13, 1982: an Air Florida Boeing 737-222 hits a bridge over the Potomac before crashing into the river just after takeoff during a snowstorm. The crash kills 78 people including four motorists who were on the bridge.

'Oh, oh my god! Tower, did you see that?' one worker is heard exclaiming.

'Crash, crash, crash, this is an alert three,' one of the air traffic controllers can be heard saying in the audio from around the time of the crash.

'I don't know if you caught earlier what happened, but there was a collision on the approach into 33. We're going to be shutting down operations for the indefinite future,' another controller remarked.

'Both the helicopter and the plane crashed in the river,' a third air traffic controller can be heard saying.

'It was probably out in the middle of the river,' the controller said.

'I just saw a fireball and then it was just gone. I haven't seen anything since they hit the river. But it was a CRJ and a helicopter that hit.'

Aviation experts have pointed out that unlike many air traffic control units, Washington uses two separate radio frequencies to communicate with rotorcraft helicopters and other aircraft.

This may have led to a 'barrier of situational awareness between the pilots', Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesperson Tony Stanton told CNN.

In footage taken from the Kennedy Center, Washington's cultural hub, the powerful lights of the descending airplane and the dimmer lights of another aircraft heading toward it can be seen until the fiery collision.

The incident occurred on a relatively warm and clear winter evening in Washington, with temperatures registering as high as 60 degrees Fahrenheit, following a stretch days earlier of intense cold and ice.

But the Potomac River is still extremely frigid.

Hours before Wednesday's crash, the water temperature was registered at 36 degrees Fahrenheit, just four degrees above freezing, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The National Weather Service reported that wind gusts of up to 25 mph were possible in the area throughout the evening, though this is not thought to have contributed to the collision.

DC mobilised a huge rescue effort in the hours following the crash.

Some 300 first responders were on scene within minutes, deploying in a fleet of inflatable rescue boats launched into the Potomac River from a point along the George Washington Parkway, just north of the airport.

Other first responders set up light towers from the shore to illuminate the area near the collision site.

At least a half-dozen boats were scanning the water using searchlights overnight as images showed vessels grouped around a partly submerged wing and what appeared to be the mangled wreckage of the plane's fuselage.

'It's a highly complex operation,' said D.C. fire chief John Donnelly. 'The conditions out there are extremely rough for the responders.'

It was unclear how a passenger plane with modern collision-avoidance technology and nearby traffic controllers could collide with a military aircraft over the nation's capital.

The airspace around Washington is often crowded, with planes coming in low over the city to land at Reagan Airport and helicopters - military, civilian and carrying senior politicians or officials - buzzing about both day and night.

President Donald Trump declaring the crash 'should have been avoided'.

'The plane was on a perfect approach path to the airport. The helicopter was heading directly toward the plane for some time. The night was clear, the lights of the plane were visible, why didn't the helicopter climb or descend, or make a turn?' he wrote.

'Why didn't the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane? This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!'

Meanwhile, aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas was 'perplexed', explaining that almost all passenger and military aircraft in the US are fitted with Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) - a standard issue software designed to prevent such incidents.

'Technically (the crash) should never have happened. It's perplexing and tragic... these sorts of things don't happen in the United States anymore,' he told the BBC.

The crash is serving as a major test for two of the Trump administration's newest agency leaders.

Pete Hegseth, sworn in days ago as defence secretary, posted on social media that an investigation has been 'launched immediately' by the Army and the Defence Department.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, just sworn in earlier this week, said at a sombre news conference at the airport early this morning that his agency would provide all possible resources to the investigation.

Reagan Airport will reopen at 11am ET on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration announced. The FAA has previously said it would be closed until 5am Friday.

Meanwhile, the governing body of US figure skating announced that several athletes, coaches and their family members were aboard the doomed flight, along with a pair of Russian world champions.

They had been returning home from the National Development Camp, an advanced training camp for promising young athletes which is held in conjunction with the US Figure Skating Championships, US Figure Skating said.

'We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims' families closely in our hearts. We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available,' it added in a statement.

As many as 15 people on the flight may have been involved in figure skating, according to reports.

Russian figure skaters Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were also on board the plane, Russian state-run TASS news agency reported, citing a source.

Married couple Shishkova, 53, and Naumov, 56, won the world championship in pairs figure skating in 1994.

'We unfortunately see that these sad reports are being confirmed. Our other fellow citizens were there,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Their son Maxim Naumov, 23, a prominent American skater recently placed fourth at the US championships in Kansas. He is not believed to have been on the plane.

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement on X: 'Tonight, as our first responders continue their efforts, we are sending our love and prayers to the families, loved ones, and communities who are experiencing loss during this terrible tragedy.'

'I can't say anything about the rescue operation right now.'

She also declined to comment on the condition of aircraft, which remains submerged in the Potomac River.

She announced that a briefing will take place at 7.30am ET (12.30pm UK time) as rescuers continue to search the Potomac river.

Witness Ari Schulman was driving home when he saw what he described as 'a stream of sparks' overhead.

'Initially I saw the plane and it looked fine, normal. It was right about to head over land,' he told CNN.

'Three seconds later, and at that point it was banked all the way to the right... I could see the underside of it, it was lit up a very bright yellow, and there was a stream of sparks underneath it,' Schulman added.

'It looked like a Roman candle.'

What happened?

Hegseth said the aircraft was on an annual proficiency flight and performing a night evaluation. He said they had night-vision goggles. The defence secretary said names and ranks were being withheld until their next-of-kin had been informed.

Recordings of air traffic control conversations published online suggested that a controller tried to warn the helicopter about the American Airlines plane in the seconds before the collision.

The helicopter pilot appears to respond to confirm they are aware of the plane, but moments later the two aircrafts crashed.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told reporters on Thursday: "I would say the helicopter was aware there was a plane in the area."

The FAA said it would investigate the incident, together with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Hegseth said he expected this to quickly establish whether the helicopter was flying in the right corridor and altitude.

An annotated satellite image shows the approximate crash site above the Potomac River. Highlighted nearby are Ronald Reagan International Airport, and the flight paths of both the plane and the helicopter

How many victims are there?

DC Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said in a Thursday morning update that officials "don't believe there are any survivors from this accident".

He said teams
had recovered
27 bodies from the plane,
and one from the helicopter.

A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation earlier told
CBS that
a higher number of at least 30 bodies had already been found.

US Figure Skating said "several members of our skating community were sadly aboard" the flight. It said this group comprised athletes, coaches and family members who were returning home from a development camp in Kansas.

Russian citizens were also on board, the Kremlin confirmed - after local media reported that ice skating coaches and former world champions Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were on the plane.

About 300 responders on rubber boats were deployed to search for survivors, Donnelly said. "The challenge is access, there is wind, pieces of ice [on the water]. It is dangerous and hard to work in," he said.

What are eyewitnesses saying?

Ari Schulman told NBC Washington that he saw the plane crash while he was driving on the George Washington Parkway, which runs alongside the airport.

He said the plane's approach looked normal, until he saw it bank hard to the right, with "streams of sparks" running underneath, illuminating its belly.

At that point, he said he knew that it looked "very, very wrong". Having seen plane landings there in the past, he said a plane's underside should not have been visible in the dark.

The sparks, he said, resembled a "giant roman candle" and went from the plane's nose to its tail.

Jimmy Mazeo said he saw the crash while having dinner with his girlfriend at a park near the airport.

He recalled seeing what looked like a "white flare" in the sky. He said planes approaching Ronald Reagan Airport appeared to have been flying in "irregular patterns".

Mr Mazeo said he did not think much of what he saw until emergency services started arriving at the scene.

What has President Trump said?

In a press conference on Thursday, PresidentTrump said the country was "in mourning".

He also took a swipe at his political foes, who he accused of hiring "mediocre" staff for air traffic control jobs. He repeated his attacks on efforts under former President Joe Biden to promote diversity within the federal workforce, suggesting standards at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had been lowered.

Trump said he and his team had "strong opinions and ideas" about what had happened, but acknowledged that the investigation was at an early stage.

He also announced he was appointing Chris Rocheleau as the temporary head of the FAA. The top job there, as well as the positions of administrator and deputy administrator, have been vacant since Trump took office.

How is air safety in the US?
Major incidents of this kind are relatively rare in the US. The most recent comparable crash was in 2009, according to a list compiled by Reuters.

That year, an aircraft crashed on approach to landing in Buffalo, New York, killing all 49 people on board and one person on the ground.

The airspace above Washington DC is both busy and highly controlled. It is used by domestic and international traffic using two airports, and there are extra factors of presidential flights, heavy military traffic and flights around the Pentagon.

Passenger airliners must follow fixed flight plans, said the BBC's transport correspondent Sean Dilley. In uncontrolled airspace, military pilots operate under strict instruction of air traffic controllers but unlike their civilian counterparts, they have freedom to deviate and a duty to "see and avoid" other aircraft.

American Airlines.

Evelyn Hockstein / Reuters

Black Hawk

UH-60 Black Hawk

The New York Times

Black Hawk

Black Hawk

American Airlines.
